“Waiting for Activation” means your iPhone has not registered your phone number for iMessage. After iOS 26, the first thing to check is an inactive physical SIM or eSIM that still contains the same number as your active line. Apple says that duplicate can cause green SMS/RCS bubbles, “Not Delivered” errors, duplicate numbers in Send & Receive, or messages sent from your email address.
Update to iOS 26.1 or later, or remove only the confirmed inactive duplicate SIM, then select your number again. If there is no duplicate line, work through the SMS, carrier, network, date-and-time, and Apple service checks below.
1. Check for an inactive duplicate SIM first
Open Settings → Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions) and look for two lines carrying the same phone number. This commonly happens after moving from a physical SIM to an eSIM, switching carriers, transferring service to a new iPhone, or adding an eSIM after setup.
- Remove a physical SIM only after confirming it is no longer active or needed.
- For an inactive eSIM, open its line and tap Delete eSIM.
- Do not delete every cellular plan. Removing the active line can interrupt calls, texts, and data and may require a carrier replacement.
After removing the inactive duplicate, go to Settings → Apps → Messages → Send & Receive and tap your displayed phone number. Apple documents this iOS 26 issue and remedy at Apple Support.

2. Update iOS
- Open Settings.
- Tap General → Software Update.
- Install the latest update offered, including iOS 26.1 or later when available.
- Restart the iPhone and recheck Settings → Apps → Messages → Send & Receive.
Apple specifically recommends iOS 26.1 or later for the documented duplicate-inactive-SIM problem. An update does not guarantee a fix when the underlying cause is blocked SMS, carrier provisioning, an Apple Account problem, or an outage.
3. Confirm the requirements for phone-number activation
- Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
- In Settings → Cellular, make sure the correct line is enabled and has service.
- Send and receive an ordinary SMS and place a normal phone call. iMessage phone-number activation requires SMS.
- If iOS warns that the carrier may charge for the activation SMS, tap Turn On to allow it.
- Keep the iPhone on the current available iOS release.
Wi‑Fi alone cannot complete activation if the carrier cannot send the required SMS. Apple says the carrier may charge for that message; the amount and availability depend on the carrier and region.
4. Correct the date and time
- Open Settings → General → Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically.
- Confirm that the displayed time zone is correct.
Do not use a manually altered clock as a permanent workaround. Incorrect time-zone information can interfere with authentication.

5. Restart iMessage and FaceTime once
- Go to Settings → Apps → Messages and turn iMessage off.
- Return to Settings → Apps → FaceTime and turn FaceTime off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Turn FaceTime and iMessage back on.
- Open Settings → Apps → Messages → Send & Receive and check whether the number is selected.
If a spinning gear appears next to the number, Apple says the iPhone will continue trying to verify it automatically. Repeatedly switching the services off and on is unnecessary.
6. Check Apple’s live service status
Visit Apple System Status and check iMessage, Apple Account, and, when relevant to setup or migration, iOS Device Activation. An outage cannot be repaired by changing local settings; wait for the service to recover and then try again.
7. Allow up to 24 hours, then contact the carrier
Carrier verification can take up to 24 hours, counted after the duplicate SIM is removed, the correct line is enabled, SMS permission is granted, and the prerequisites above are satisfied. Avoid repeated toggling during that period.

If the number is still unchecked after 24 hours, ask the carrier:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“My iPhone cannot activate my phone number for iMessage. Can you confirm that this line can send and receive international SMS and that the number is fully provisioned?”
The carrier should also check for a number port still in progress, an incomplete eSIM transfer, premium or short-code SMS restrictions, suspension, or dual-SIM settings using the wrong line.

8. Try Apple’s online activation process
When your Apple Account works but the phone-number state remains stuck, open Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime activation page. Under Enable Apple Account, tap Get Started, sign in, enter the relevant phone number, and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple will email you when the account is ready.
This process cannot bypass a blocked activation SMS or an incorrect SIM configuration.
9. Temporary workaround: use your Apple Account email
To use iMessage while phone-number activation is pending, open Settings → Apps → Messages → Send & Receive and select a verified Apple Account email address. This restores iMessage through the email identity, not through your phone number. Conversations can split into separate threads when the same contact is reached from the email address and later from the number.
Choose the next step
| What you see | Best next action |
|---|---|
| The same number appears on two SIMs | Update to iOS 26.1 or later, or remove only the inactive SIM, then select the number in Send & Receive. |
| Ordinary SMS or calls fail | Contact the carrier; iMessage phone-number activation is unlikely to succeed until cellular service works. |
| No duplicate SIM, SMS works, number is unchecked | Verify connectivity, automatic date and time, current iOS, and the one-time iMessage/FaceTime restart sequence. |
| Still unchecked after 24 hours | Ask the carrier about international SMS and provisioning, then contact Apple if the line is confirmed healthy. |
| Apple System Status reports an outage | Wait for the affected service to return and retry. |
| You need iMessage immediately | Select a verified Apple Account email temporarily. |
When Apple Support is the right escalation
- Your Apple Account cannot sign in or Apple’s activation page reports an account problem.
- SMS works, the correct SIM is active, and the number remains unactivated beyond the 24-hour window.
- iMessage and FaceTime fail on multiple Apple devices using the same account.
- The problem began after an Apple Account password change.
- Apple’s System Status page shows an account or activation incident.
A network-settings reset is a later option only for persistent connectivity problems; it erases saved Wi‑Fi networks, VPN-related settings, and other network configuration. A factory reset is not Apple’s documented fix for the duplicate-SIM issue and should be considered only after a backup and guidance from Apple or your carrier.
