“IMS registration status: Not registered” is not automatically a phone fault. It means the phone’s IMS identity is not currently registered with the carrier. If calls, texts, mobile data, and Wi‑Fi Calling work normally, the status may be harmless. If calls fail, Wi‑Fi Calling will not activate, or mobile data works while voice does not, follow the steps below—starting with carrier and SIM checks rather than a factory reset.
What IMS registration means
IMS stands for IP Multimedia Subsystem, the carrier framework used for IP-based communication services such as VoLTE and Wi‑Fi Calling. In technical terms, Not registered means the relevant identity is not currently registered with the IMS network. 3GPP-derived specifications define NOT_REGISTERED as an identity that is not registered.
This is different from ordinary cellular registration. A phone can show LTE or 5G service and have working mobile data while IMS remains unregistered. The practical effect depends on the carrier, plan, SIM or eSIM, device model, firmware region, and available voice fallback.

- Can you place and receive a normal call?
- Do SMS and MMS work?
- Does mobile data work?
- Does Wi‑Fi Calling appear and activate?
- Does the problem occur in more than one location?
If calls, messages, and Wi‑Fi Calling work, do not perform a factory reset just to change the displayed status. IMS can show a temporary or carrier-specific state during boot, SIM detection, roaming, or a network transition.
Troubleshoot promptly if calls fail immediately or drop, incoming calls do not arrive, Wi‑Fi Calling is missing or cannot activate, SMS/MMS or RCS stopped working at the same time, or the phone shows Emergency calls only or Not registered on network.
Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Refresh the connection
- Turn on Airplane mode.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Turn Airplane mode off.
- Restart the phone.
- Wait several minutes after reconnection before checking SIM status.
This can clear a temporary modem or IMS-process failure, but it cannot repair carrier provisioning or unsupported hardware.

On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings → Connections → SIM manager. Confirm that the intended SIM or eSIM is enabled. On a dual-SIM phone, verify which line is selected for calls and mobile data.
Power off the phone before removing a physical SIM. Inspect it for damage and reinstall it carefully. Wi‑Fi Calling also requires active SIM or eSIM service, and availability depends on the carrier and device. See Samsung’s Wi‑Fi Calling guidance.

3. Use automatic network settings
Menu names vary by Galaxy model, One UI version, carrier, and country. The usual paths are:
- Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network mode: choose the carrier’s automatic option, such as 5G/LTE/3G/2G (auto connect) or LTE/3G/2G (auto connect).
- Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network operators: enable Select automatically.
Do not force 5G-only mode while troubleshooting voice registration. Samsung recommends using an appropriate network mode and contacting the carrier when service remains unavailable. Samsung’s network troubleshooting guide contains additional model-specific guidance.

4. Check VoLTE and Wi‑Fi Calling
Look under Settings → Connections → Mobile networks for VoLTE calls, 4G Calling, HD Voice, or a similar control. Then check Settings → Connections → Wi‑Fi Calling. Some carriers expose these controls through the Phone app instead.
If a control is missing, greyed out, or turns itself off, that often points to carrier or firmware provisioning rather than a setting you can repair locally. Wi‑Fi Calling is carrier-dependent; Google also notes that the feature may require carrier reactivation or support intervention. See Google’s Wi‑Fi Calling help.
5. Install available updates
Install pending Android or One UI updates and any carrier configuration update offered by the phone. An update may resolve a modem problem, but it is not a guaranteed IMS fix. Imported or unlocked phones can also expose compatibility problems after an update.

Reset Samsung network settings
If the problem continues, reset local network configuration:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management → Reset.
- Choose Reset mobile network settings or Reset network settings.
- Confirm the reset.
Depending on the model, this may remove saved Wi‑Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, APN-related settings, and other network preferences. It does not erase personal files or installed apps. If you use an MVNO or nonstandard carrier, obtain its APN details first. Samsung documents the relevant reset behavior in its Galaxy reset guidance.
Reset the APN only when data or MMS is also failing
For mobile-data or MMS problems, open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names, open the menu, and choose Reset to default. Samsung identifies incorrect APN settings as one possible cause of network-connection problems.
APNs primarily control packet-data services. Resetting one is not a universal IMS repair. Do not invent an “IMS APN” or manually edit hidden carrier settings unless your carrier gives exact instructions.
Find out whether the SIM or phone is responsible
Test the affected SIM in another compatible phone, and if possible test a known-good SIM in the affected phone. Interpret the results this way:

Moving a SIM to another Android phone and then returning it may appear to help in some user reports, but it is not an official or universal activation procedure. Do not treat an anecdotal workaround as proof that the carrier profile was permanently repaired.
Ask the carrier to reprovision IMS
IMS registration is a carrier-device interaction. Contact the carrier if voice or Wi‑Fi Calling is failing after the local checks. Ask them to verify:
- Your line is active and not barred or suspended.
- VoLTE or HD Voice is enabled.
- Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled, if available.
- The SIM or eSIM is correctly provisioned.
- Your exact device model, IMEI, firmware region, and carrier variant are supported.
- The IMEI is not blocked or incorrectly classified.
- Your account profile can be refreshed or reprovisioned.
- There is no outage, roaming restriction, or regional limitation.
You can say:
My phone has mobile service and data, but IMS registration shows “Not registered” and voice or Wi‑Fi Calling is failing. Please verify VoLTE/IMS provisioning for my line, SIM or eSIM, IMEI, and exact device model, and refresh the profile if necessary.
Do not insist on a particular internal term such as “IMS re-push”; carriers use different procedures. A replacement SIM or eSIM may help an old or incorrectly provisioned profile, but it will not fix an unsupported model, blocked IMEI, firmware mismatch, or carrier outage.

Common special cases
Does IMS registration control 5G?
No—not by itself. IMS is closely associated with carrier voice services such as VoLTE and VoNR, but IMS status does not determine whether 5G data works. A phone can use 5G data while voice is unavailable or uses another supported mechanism. The exact behavior depends on the carrier and device architecture.

Imported or unlocked phones
Radio-band support is not the same as IMS certification. An imported phone may connect to LTE or 5G but lack the carrier’s required profile. “Unlocked” also does not guarantee VoLTE or Wi‑Fi Calling compatibility on every network. Model number, region, CSC, firmware, and IMEI matter.
Dual-SIM and eSIM phones
IMS may be active on one line but not the other. Confirm that the affected SIM is selected for calls and data. Reinstalling an eSIM does not by itself prove that the carrier’s backend profile is correct; the carrier may need to reprovision it.
Roaming and older devices
IMS behavior can change while roaming, and a visited network may not support the same services as the home network. Older phones may also stop working for voice after a carrier retires legacy networks or requires VoLTE.
The issue started after an update
Record the device model, region, software build, and update date. Restart, test another SIM, and try the network reset. Check whether the same carrier and model are affected, then contact the carrier and Samsung support. Community reports can reveal patterns, but they do not prove that an update caused every IMS failure.
When repair or replacement is justified
Consider hardware service only after the carrier confirms that the line, SIM/eSIM, IMEI, and device compatibility are correct. A hardware or radio fault becomes more plausible when every known-good SIM fails only in one phone, the phone has physical or liquid damage, or calls remain unavailable after carrier reprovisioning and a network reset.
Fixes to avoid
- Do not factory-reset first. It erases user data and cannot correct carrier provisioning or an unsupported device.
- Do not rely on hidden service codes. Menus and codes vary by manufacturer, chipset, carrier, country, and firmware.
- Do not edit CSC, modem, IMS XML, or engineering files. These changes can break calling and remove carrier support.
- Do not assume a new SIM is always the answer. SIM replacement cannot fix an unsupported model, blocked IMEI, firmware mismatch, or outage.
Bottom line
“IMS registration status: Not registered” matters when it coincides with failed calls, Wi‑Fi Calling, or related carrier services. Refresh the connection, confirm the active SIM, use automatic network settings, check VoLTE and Wi‑Fi Calling, and reset network settings if necessary. If the problem survives those checks, the carrier should verify IMS provisioning and device compatibility before you consider a factory reset, repair, or replacement.
