Fitbit Versa 2 owners have repeatedly reported sudden battery drain after a firmware or app update, but Fitbit’s public release notes do not confirm that an update caused a widespread defect. The firmware most often named in Versa 2 complaints is 35.72.1.23 (Fitbit OS 4.2.4). Treat that connection as an owner-reported association, not a proven diagnosis: settings, phone-app behavior, charging problems and an aging battery can produce similar symptoms.

Start with a restart and a controlled battery test before resetting or replacing the watch. The evidence for an update-linked pattern is stronger for Versa 2 than for the original Versa.

What owners are reporting

Some Versa 2 owners say their watch once lasted several days but began losing most of its charge overnight or needing a charge within roughly 10–15 hours after an update. One community thread describes a drop from around four or five days to roughly 10–12 hours. These are individual reports, not standardized tests, so they establish a recurring complaint—not how common it is or what caused it. Versa 2 battery-short-life reports and a January 2026 battery-drain discussion describe complaints at different times.

Some users also describe unusually fast charging, failure to reach 100%, restarts, warmth or a rapidly changing battery percentage. Those signs can point to a charging or hardware issue as well as software. Phone battery drain from the Fitbit app is a separate issue from the watch itself losing charge.

The firmware version—and what Fitbit has confirmed

The version frequently cited in Versa 2 complaints is 35.72.1.23, also identified as Fitbit OS 4.2.4. Fitbit’s release notes list it for Versa 2 as an update with “bug fixes and improvements”; they do not identify a battery-drain defect or announce a battery-specific fix.

Fitbit Community moderators have replied to individual reports with troubleshooting suggestions, including checking battery-heavy features and charging equipment. That is not the same as Fitbit formally confirming that firmware caused the problem. Nor does a report that the watch updated “recently” establish that the firmware itself was newly released: a device may install an older version later, and the phone app or a coincidental battery fault may also be involved.

Bottom line on the claim: the complaints are real and repeated, especially for Versa 2, but the available public documentation does not prove that 35.72.1.23 caused a universal battery problem or that Fitbit has issued a dedicated fix. There is no supported Versa 2 firmware rollback procedure documented in the cited guidance.

Try these checks in order

  1. Record what is happening. Note the watch model, firmware version, Fitbit app version, phone and operating-system version, and battery percentage at bedtime and in the morning. Record whether the watch gets warm, whether it charges fully, and whether the problem began suddenly or gradually. This gives you a baseline before changing settings.
  2. Restart the watch. On Versa 2, press and hold the button for 10 seconds, until the Fitbit logo appears. A restart is not a factory reset and does not delete your watch data. See the Versa 2 user manual.
  3. Run a one-charge-cycle settings test. Temporarily turn off always-on display, reduce brightness, disable unnecessary notifications and SpO2 tracking, and avoid GPS-enabled exercise sessions you do not need. Use a simple built-in clock face rather than an animated or complex third-party one. Fitbit identifies always-on display and GPS among features that can shorten battery life; SpO2 and excessive notifications are also named in moderator troubleshooting advice. If battery life improves, restore features one at a time to identify which change matters. See Google’s Fitbit battery-life guidance.
  4. Check whether syncing or the phone app changes the result. Sync the watch, then force-close the Fitbit app and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the phone. Observe the watch through a comparable period. If it still drains rapidly while disconnected, phone syncing is less likely to be the sole cause—but this test cannot by itself prove a hardware fault. App-related behavior is one possible explanation raised in community troubleshooting, not an official diagnosis.
  5. Inspect charging. Use the correct Fitbit cable, clean and dry the contacts, and check that the watch sits securely on the charger. If possible, try a computer USB port or a reliable safety-certified wall adapter. Google says charging to 100% can take up to two hours and advises against charging in temperatures below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C). Charging only at a particular angle, a damaged cable or a battery that drops sharply as soon as the watch is removed warrants further support.
  6. Confirm that any update completed. Keep the watch charged and near the phone, open the Fitbit app while syncing, and check the firmware version shown for the device. Google recommends at least 50% charge (75% or more is recommended), a stable connection and the latest app version before updating. Follow Google’s update troubleshooting guidance if an update failed or stalled. Do not install unofficial firmware files or use bootloader hacks to roll back the watch.
  7. Factory-reset only as a last software test. Sync first, and note any settings or clock faces you want to restore. Reset through the watch’s settings, set it up with minimal features enabled, and observe it before restoring third-party faces and all notifications. A reset may help with a corrupted configuration; it cannot repair a worn battery. Do not treat it as a guaranteed fix.

How to read the symptoms

What you observe What it may suggest What to do next
Drain began abruptly after an update Software, app or settings change—or a battery problem that appeared at the same time Record versions, restart, and run the settings test before concluding the update is responsible.
Battery lasts longer with always-on display, notifications or GPS disabled Those features or their use may be contributing substantially Restore them selectively and keep only what you need.
It keeps draining quickly with Bluetooth off and optional features disabled A watch-side problem or aging battery becomes more plausible Contact support, particularly if the watch is under warranty.
Battery had been declining over months, or the watch is several years old Normal battery aging or hardware deterioration is a serious possibility Compare repair cost and risk with replacement; a reset cannot restore battery capacity.
Charge percentage jumps, collapses, or the watch cannot hold a charge Battery or charging fault Check cable, contacts and seating, then seek support if the behavior persists.
The watch gets unusually hot, swells, smells unusual or is physically damaged Potential safety or hardware issue Stop using and charging it, and contact Fitbit support. Do not open the watch yourself.

A software update can coincide with, or make more noticeable, a weak battery if power use changes. That does not establish that the update physically damaged the battery.

When to contact support, repair or replace

Contact Fitbit support if the watch is under warranty, repeatedly reboots, will not charge, remains dramatically short-lived after the checks above, or shows heat or physical damage. Use the Google Fitbit Help Center. Provide the purchase date, model, firmware version, phone and app versions, charging equipment, and your test results; screenshots or a simple overnight battery log can help document the issue. Ask for a case number if you want a record of the complaint.

Consider independent repair cautiously. Fitbit does not appear to offer a routine official battery-replacement service for these sealed watches, though third-party repair may be possible. Opening a watch can compromise water resistance, parts and workmanship vary, and a new battery will not help if software or another component is responsible. Get a quote and ask about parts, warranty and water resistance before deciding.

Replacement makes more sense when battery life remains poor after a controlled test, repair is expensive relative to the watch, or the device is otherwise failing. Compare features as well as price: a newer Fitbit model may not preserve every Versa 2 feature you use. Do not assume a replacement is necessary until settings, charging and support options have been checked.

Versa and Versa 2 are not the same case

The update-linked reports are more specific and numerous for Versa 2. Reports about the original Versa exist, but the available evidence does not tie it to the same firmware pattern as strongly; age, charging problems and ordinary battery wear are competing explanations.

Google’s estimates are 4+ days for the original Versa and 6+ days for Versa 2 under stated conditions; Versa 2 is rated for up to three days with always-on display. These are “up to” estimates, not guarantees. Actual runtime depends on settings, notifications, GPS and exercise use, temperature, clock face and battery age. Google notes that after several hundred charge cycles, a device may need charging more often. A fall from several days to hours is still severe enough to investigate.

The published security-support table lists minimum support through December 2021 for the original Versa and December 2025 for Versa 2; both dates have passed as of August 18, 2026. Those dates describe the published security-support period, not a promise about every possible update or a guarantee of repair or replacement eligibility. See Google’s Fitbit security-support table.
