You can run browser automation on infrastructure you control with Playwright, or use Browser Use’s documented local Python library. That gives your team control over where the browser process runs; it does not establish that a bank or fintech permits a particular automation, or that the workflow meets legal, security, or regulatory requirements. Check permission and governance for the exact institution, task, data, and jurisdiction before automating an account.

Choose an approach that matches the workflow

Start by deciding whether the job needs a predictable script or an agent that interprets instructions. Also define what “on our own infrastructure” means for your design: where the browser runs, which services it contacts, who can access credentials and session data, and where logs or artifacts are stored.

Approach What the documentation establishes Best fit to evaluate What to verify
Playwright Its API can launch a browser, create a page, navigate, and close the browser. It supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, with options for branded Chrome and Edge. Playwright browser documentation Deterministic, scripted browser flows where engineers define the actions and checks. Browser/version pairing, managed-browser policies, profile isolation, and the target institution’s permission.
Browser Use local library The project describes an open-source Python library that can run locally and says users can host the library and browsers on their own infrastructure. Browser Use project README Evaluation of an agent-oriented approach when the task is not simply a fixed sequence of scripted actions. Exact version, any external model or service dependencies, credential flow, logs, and data handling. The project’s deployment description is not an independent security assessment.

These approaches do not answer the same operational question: Playwright is a browser automation framework, while Browser Use presents an agent-oriented library and optional hosted services. Decide which control surface fits the task before comparing hosting boundaries.

Plan the execution boundary before writing a script

A browser running on a company machine or worker is only one part of the data path. An authenticated page may expose account information to the automation process and to any model or service connected to it. Map that path explicitly before a proof of concept touches live data.

  • SWISS ENGINEERED DESIGN: Built by Cryptnox as a single card for authentication and access control and backed by a 2 year warranty
  • Browser and process: identify the host, operating-system account, network routes, browser channel, and who can administer the worker.
  • Secrets and sessions: decide how credentials enter the workflow, which process can read them, whether session state persists, and who can retrieve it. Use a dedicated automation profile rather than a person’s normal browser profile.
  • Artifacts and telemetry: identify screenshots, downloads, traces, logs, and error reports that may contain sensitive information. Restrict access and retention to what the workflow needs.
  • Outbound dependencies: list any model, API, hosted browser, or other service the workflow calls. A local browser does not make those other services local.
  • Ownership: assign responsibility for browser updates, patching, isolation, monitoring, and recovery when a run fails.

Browser Use’s enterprise page advertises controls for its managed service, including configurable retention, domain allow/block lists, and credential handling. Those claims describe Browser Use Enterprise; they should not be treated as controls automatically present in its open-source or self-hosted setup. Browser Use Enterprise

Install and pin Playwright with its browser binaries

Playwright releases are paired with specific browser binaries. Its documentation states: “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” Playwright documentation Treat the package and browser installation as one versioned unit: pin the package in your project’s dependency lockfile, install the matching browser binaries in the build or deployment process, and update them together after testing.

  1. Create an isolated project: use a dedicated repository or service account for the automation rather than a developer’s everyday browser setup.
  2. Install Playwright: in a Node.js project, run npm install playwright, then npx playwright install chromium to install the browser binary associated with the installed package.
  3. Reproduce the install in deployment: follow the browser installation documentation for your operating system and environment. If your environment uses a proxy, firewall, or internal artifact repository, configure browser installation for that environment rather than assuming a developer workstation’s cache is available.
  4. Keep updates controlled: update the Playwright package and browser binaries together in a tested change. Avoid silently substituting an independently updated system browser.
  5. Test the actual browser channel: begin with a supported bundled browser. If the workflow requires branded Chrome or Edge, test that exact channel on the managed image and under the organization’s browser policies.

Playwright warns against controlling Chrome’s default user profile: that use is unsupported and may cause pages not to load or the browser to exit. Give automation a separate profile and do not point it at an employee’s normal Chrome data. Enterprise policies can also affect Playwright control of Chrome and Edge; a successful local test does not establish that a managed deployment will behave the same way.

A minimal local Playwright run in Node.js

The example below opens a URL, checks that navigation produced a response, prints the page title, and closes the browser even if a step throws. It deliberately uses a fresh, non-persistent browser context rather than a person’s saved profile. It is a navigation example, not a recipe for signing in to a financial account or bypassing a site’s controls.

Save as check-page.js after installing Playwright as described above:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

async function main() {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  try {
    const context = await browser.newContext();
    const page = await context.newPage();
    page.setDefaultTimeout(10_000);

    const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
      timeout: 30_000,
    });

    if (!response) {
      throw new Error('Navigation returned no main-resource response');
    }
    if (!response.ok()) {
      throw new Error(`Navigation failed with HTTP ${response.status()}`);
    }

    console.log(await page.title());
    await context.close();
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
}

main().catch((error) => {
  console.error(error);
  process.exitCode = 1;
});

Run it with node check-page.js. Replace the example URL only with a destination and activity your organization is authorized to automate. For a controlled internal workflow, add explicit checks for expected page state and stop safely when those checks fail; do not infer success merely because a click completed or a page loaded.

Make actions observable and bounded

Use locators tied to the page’s accessible names or stable attributes, set timeouts appropriate to the environment, and assert the expected result after each consequential action. Keep a run’s inputs, browser version, outcome, and minimal diagnostic metadata sufficient to investigate failures. Do not indiscriminately save page content, screenshots, or browser state: they can capture sensitive financial information.

When Browser Use is a candidate

Browser Use documents a Python library that can be run locally and says the library and browsers can be hosted on your own infrastructure. That supports evaluating a locally hosted deployment, but it is not proof that every component involved in a particular agent workflow remains inside your network. Before using it with financial data, establish the exact version and determine whether the task invokes an external model or service, how credentials are supplied, and what the software logs or retains. Browser Use project README

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare it with a direct scripted framework on the same bounded task. Ask whether an agent’s interpretation is necessary, how you will validate its actions and stop conditions, and whether the added components fit your security review. Do not equate “can be hosted locally” with a security certification or permission from a financial institution.

Permission and governance are separate from technical capability

A framework’s ability to control a browser does not tell you whether a bank or fintech allows automation of its interface, or whether a workflow satisfies your organization’s obligations. Terms, legal requirements, and regulatory suitability depend on the actual institution, jurisdiction, data, and task; the available documentation does not settle those questions for a particular deployment.

  • Check the institution’s current terms and any applicable guidance for the specific account and workflow.
  • Ask your organization’s security, legal, and compliance owners to review the data, jurisdiction, access method, and intended use.
  • Define an approved scope and a stop condition for unexpected prompts, changed pages, errors, or additional verification requests.
  • Do not treat successful execution, a locally hosted browser, or an automation framework’s feature set as evidence of authorization.

Performance, reliability, and operating cost

Self-hosting shifts operational responsibility to your team; it does not remove the work of keeping the browser environment dependable. The reviewed documentation establishes no universal runtime, success rate, infrastructure cost, or savings figure for fintech workflows, so measure those in a controlled environment rather than relying on generic estimates.

  • Measure the whole run: record navigation and action durations, failure categories, retries, and worker resource use for the approved task. Separate a slow site response from a browser crash or a script assertion failure.
  • Control concurrency: start with a small number of isolated workers and increase only after checking resource limits, session behavior, and the institution’s rules. Do not increase request volume to overcome a site’s restrictions.
  • Recover deliberately: make runs safe to stop and restart, and define how to reconcile an uncertain outcome before retrying an action that could change financial data.
  • Budget for ownership: account for worker capacity, browser installation and updates, monitoring, security review, and incident handling. Actual cost depends on your environment and workflow.

Troubleshooting common deployment failures

Symptom Likely cause Practical response
Browser launch reports that an executable is missing. The browser binary was not installed for the deployed Playwright package, or the build and runtime environments do not share the expected install. Run the documented browser installation step for the pinned Playwright dependency during image or environment setup. Check the installed package and binary as a pair.
A run works on a developer machine but not on the managed worker. Different browser channel, package/binary pairing, operating-system environment, network rules, or enterprise browser policy. Reproduce the production image and policy configuration. Check the browser installation guidance, proxy/firewall setup, and actual Chrome or Edge policy behavior before changing launch arguments.
Chrome exits or pages fail to load when using a saved profile. The script is attempting to control Chrome’s default user profile, which Playwright documents as unsupported. Use a separate automation profile or a fresh browser context; do not reuse an employee’s everyday browser profile.
Navigation times out or returns an unexpected page. Site response, network path, page behavior, or an expected-state assumption may differ from the test environment. Check connectivity and the actual response, distinguish timeout from a non-success HTTP response, and use bounded waits plus explicit page-state checks. Stop rather than retrying blindly when the page or outcome is uncertain.
An agent deployment appears local but data handling is unclear. The library and browser location may have been confused with the location of a connected model, hosted service, credentials, or logs. Trace every component and data flow for the exact version and configuration. Review retention and access controls before using real account data.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Playwright for a deterministic scripted flow, or evaluate Browser Use when an agent-oriented approach is genuinely needed.
  • Document where the browser, credentials, session state, artifacts, logs, and any connected model or service operate.
  • Pin and update Playwright and its browser binaries together; test the actual managed-browser configuration.
  • Isolate automation from normal user profiles and limit access to sensitive state and artifacts.
  • Obtain institution-specific and internal approval before automating a financial workflow.
  • Use a screenshot service only when the need is page capture, not interactive account automation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does running the browser on our own servers mean the workflow is fully self-hosted?

Not necessarily. The browser may be local while a connected model, API, logging system, or other dependency is external. Confirm the data path for the exact configuration.

Can a local automation test prove that a financial institution permits the workflow?

No. Technical execution does not establish permission. Check the institution’s terms and obtain the appropriate internal review for the specific task and jurisdiction.
