Verdict: The Filegear One Plus was an appealing personal-cloud appliance in 2019, but it is not a dependable 2026 purchase unless you verify account activation, remote access, apps, firmware, and a recovery path before paying. Existing owners should export their data and maintain independent backups. A current NAS or established cloud service is the safer choice for important files.
What the Filegear One Plus was
The One Plus was a small computer rather than a simple USB enclosure. It combined a user-installed 2.5-inch SATA drive with USB storage and Filegear’s software for browser, mobile, local-network, and remote access. That positioned it between Dropbox-style cloud storage and a conventional NAS.
The One Plus improved on the Filegear One with a faster processor, more memory, and an internal 2.5-inch drive bay. Files stayed on attached drives, but historical remote access and account authentication depended on Filegear’s online ecosystem. That distinction is central today: local ownership did not eliminate vendor dependence for cloud features.
Historical reviews described a compact plastic enclosure measuring roughly 5 × 5 × 2 inches with the drive bay attached, VESA mounting hardware, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, USB-C, microSD, HDMI and 3.5-mm audio outputs. The reported hardware was an Intel Celeron J3455 quad-core CPU and 4GB of memory. The internal drive connected through the detachable bay and USB-C interface, not a multi-bay NAS backplane. These are 2019-era specifications, not current manufacturer-confirmed specifications (TweakTown; ServeTheHome).

ServeTheHome found the unit quiet and cool in its review sample, while its HDMI output was reported inactive. Historical pricing was about $249.99, with a one-year warranty reported by TweakTown. Neither price nor warranty should be treated as current availability.
What it could do
- Manage files in a browser and separate pictures, music and movie views.
- Automatically categorize media, create photo albums and synchronize photos from a mobile device.
- Play music and MP4 video.
- Invite users to private areas and create share links with password and expiration controls, according to TweakTown.
- Expose files over SMB for ordinary Windows and network-file access.
- Replicate files across attached drives and deduplicate matching files.
- Use an existing NAS as an additional storage source.
These features were useful for a small appliance, but they do not amount to a modern AI photo service, RAID, ransomware protection or complete backup. Replication creates another copy; it does not provide version history, off-site protection or immunity from deletion, malware, theft or fire. Adding a drive could also involve importing existing files or formatting the drive, so valuable data should never be connected to an untested setup without a separate copy (TweakTown setup notes).
Historical setup process
- Install a 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD in the bottom bay.
- Connect power and wired Ethernet to the router.
- Create and verify a Filegear account through its web portal.
- Select the detected device and installed drive.
- Import files or choose formatting, depending on the drive’s contents.
- Add USB storage if needed, then configure Wi-Fi.
- Install the mobile app and create users, albums, libraries or share links.
This is a historical workflow, not a verified 2026 procedure. A January 6, 2026 comment on the original review reported that a verification code never arrived and the service page appeared blank. That is an individual report, not proof of shutdown, but it makes activation the first question for any buyer (ServeTheHome).

Historical performance
ServeTheHome measured approximately 22.4 watts at the wall in a configuration using a Celeron J3455 and Samsung 840 SSD. TweakTown reported roughly 75MB/s while transferring a Linux ISO over Samba on Windows 10. ServeTheHome found local and remote media playback smooth in its tests, while noting that remote playback depended on the outside connection. These are single, old review results—not guarantees for a used unit, a different drive or today’s service (ServeTheHome measurements; TweakTown test).
The standard system was described as supporting about 500,000 files, with a planned metadata upgrade to approximately 2.5 million. Treat that upgrade as a historical plan, not a confirmed feature.
The decisive 2026 issue: can it still be activated?
The official Filegear site could not be verified during the research for this article, and no current product page, support portal, firmware archive, live pricing page or service-status page could be confirmed. That does not prove the company or service has permanently closed. It does mean a buyer cannot reasonably assume that account creation, remote access, mobile authentication or firmware updates still work.

- Activate the exact device and confirm it appears in the account.
- Test remote access from a different network, not only your home Wi-Fi.
- Check whether the current iOS or Android app can authenticate.
- Confirm local SMB access and copy a noncritical test folder.
- Identify how data can be recovered if Filegear’s servers disappear.
Use wired Ethernet first, check the router’s DHCP lease and link lights, try a current desktop browser, and inspect spam filters. Do not format or factory-reset a drive containing valuable files. If local SMB still works, copy data off immediately. If activation cannot be completed, regard the appliance as unsupported.
Security, privacy and backup limitations
Historical sharing controls do not establish current security. There is no verified current documentation here for end-to-end encryption, relay-server behavior, two-factor authentication, vulnerability disclosure, firmware cadence or account-data handling. A closed-source appliance can be convenient, but it also leaves you dependent on the vendor’s continued operation and security maintenance.

Ask whether links remain revocable, whether passwords and expiration dates still work, whether the device can operate entirely locally, and what happens to account data if Filegear disappears. Keep at least one independently managed backup, preferably offline or off-site, regardless of whether you use replication.

The One Plus may still suit an enthusiast who wants a low-cost local experiment and accepts that cloud functions might fail. It is a poor choice for dependable family remote access, current security updates or business continuity.

Better alternatives in 2026
Current NAS appliances
A two-bay NAS such as the Synology DS223 offers a mature administration interface, mobile apps, user management and backup tools. The QNAP TS-233 offers flexible applications and hardware options. Both require separate drives and more maintenance than the Filegear concept, but their support and software ecosystems are current and documented.

Self-hosted software
Nextcloud and ownCloud recreate file synchronization and sharing on a NAS, mini-PC, server or hosted provider. They offer more portability and control, but you must handle updates, networking, security and backups.
Hosted cloud storage
Dropbox is the simplest sharing and synchronization replacement. Google One/Drive fits Android, Google Photos and Google Workspace users, while OneDrive suits Windows and Microsoft 365 households. These services trade local hardware ownership for recurring fees and provider dependence, but their availability and account recovery paths are clearer.
