China’s FH-97 drew attention at the 2021 Zhuhai air show because its angular design closely resembled the U.S. Kratos XQ-58A Valkyrie. But the display showed a concept—not a publicly verified operational aircraft, production system, or proven direct equivalent to the Valkyrie.
What China unveiled in 2021
Feihong, a company associated with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation ecosystem, displayed the FH-97 at Airshow China in Zhuhai on September 28, 2021. It was presented as a high-speed, stealth-oriented, multirole unmanned aerial vehicle intended for reconnaissance and attack missions.
Contemporary reporting described the FH-97 as a drone concept and noted that detailed specifications were not disclosed. The physical display did not establish that the aircraft had flown, entered production, or been accepted for service. Reuters reporting via Nippon.com characterized it as a concept with similarities to the XQ-58A Valkyrie.

Some exhibition-related reporting associated the system with the smaller FH-901 unmanned aircraft, suggesting a possible broader system-of-systems approach. That relationship should be treated as an exhibition description or secondary-reporting claim, not as evidence of an operational configuration. A frequently repeated range figure of 1,000 kilometers likewise was not an independently verified combat-radius measurement. Army Recognition summarized the 2021 display.

What “loyal wingman” means
“Loyal wingman” describes an operating concept rather than a specific aircraft type. An unmanned aircraft works alongside crewed fighters, often using supervised autonomy, to extend their sensors, weapons, electronic-warfare reach, and survivability.
- Forward reconnaissance and threat detection.
- Target identification, tracking, or designation.
- Electronic support, jamming, and communications relay.
- Weapons carriage and strike support.
- Decoy or high-risk missions near enemy air defenses.
- Formation operations that reduce the workload of crewed-aircraft pilots.
U.S. programs increasingly use terms such as collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) and autonomous collaborative platform (ACP). The goal is to add combat mass without placing a pilot in every aircraft.
The related term attritable does not necessarily mean disposable. It generally describes an aircraft designed to be substantially less costly and less politically or operationally costly to lose than a crewed fighter, allowing commanders to accept greater risk and deploy larger numbers.
Why the FH-97 was compared with the XQ-58A
The comparison was driven by both appearance and mission. The FH-97 display showed a compact, angular aircraft with swept wings, an upper-surface engine intake, and outward-canted twin vertical stabilizers—features also associated with the Valkyrie’s low-observable, high-subsonic design.
That resemblance does not prove that China copied the Valkyrie or obtained its technology. Similar requirements—reduced radar signature, internal payload volume, long range, and high-subsonic performance—can produce similar aerodynamic solutions. The War Zone noted both the striking resemblance and the fact that similar configurations have appeared in other loyal-wingman concepts.
FH-97A: the visibly different follow-on design
China displayed the FH-97A at Airshow China 2022, held November 8–13. It was substantially redesigned externally and was described more explicitly as an autonomous formation aircraft intended to accompany crewed combat aircraft.
According to an interview with the FH-97A’s chief designer published by Global Times, its intended roles included:

These statements describe intended functions, not independently verified performance. The FH-97 and FH-97A should not automatically be treated as the same aircraft: the original FH-97 was shown in 2021 as a Valkyrie-like concept, while the FH-97A appeared in 2022 with a different configuration and a more explicit loyal-wingman mission description. Public sources do not establish the precise engineering relationship between them. GlobalSecurity also documents the major visible changes.

There is no sufficiently reliable public FH-97 specification set for a meaningful numerical comparison. Claims about its speed, range, payload, engine, radar signature, or weapons should not be presented as confirmed aircraft performance.
What the Valkyrie has publicly demonstrated
Kratos says the XQ-58A has flown since 2019, can exceed 3,000 nautical miles, reach approximately Mach 0.86 and 45,000 feet, operate without a conventional runway, and carry internal and external payloads. Its fact sheet lists an approximate 6,000-pound maximum launch weight, 600-pound internal payload capacity, 600-pound mid-wing capacity, and approximately Mach 0.72 cruise speed. The product-page speed and fact-sheet cruise figures refer to different performance categories, not necessarily conflicting claims.
These figures are manufacturer claims. The U.S. National Museum of the United States Air Force separately lists approximate figures for the displayed aircraft.

The Air Force Test Center described the missions as advancing autonomous collaborative operations with crewed fighters. Those tests do not make the Valkyrie “combat-proven,” but they provide a substantially larger public flight and teaming record than is available for the FH-97 family.
Kratos has also publicly described Valkyrie electronic-warfare and Marine Corps-related testing. Those activities show continuing development and integration, not proof that every advertised capability is mature or deployed at scale.

- Demonstrated autonomous control with Chinese crewed aircraft.
- Carried or released weapons.
- Demonstrated electronic warfare, sensor fusion, or communications-relay functions.
- Entered meaningful production.
- Been accepted or deployed by a Chinese military unit.
- Achieved the claimed or reported range and performance figures.
- Proven operation in communications-denied or GPS-denied environments.
- Established its datalink, autonomy architecture, engine, payload, or radar signature.
The distinction matters because a concept display, a prototype, a flight-tested system, a production aircraft, and an operationally deployed weapon are five different milestones. Public descriptions of intended capability cannot substitute for evidence of those milestones.
The larger strategic significance
The FH-97 matters even without verified operational status because it shows that China is publicly exploring the same broad air-combat logic pursued by the United States and Australia: distribute sensors, weapons, and electronic effects across more aircraft while reducing the number of pilots exposed to the most dangerous parts of a mission.
Such systems could extend a fighter’s detection and weapons range, complicate an adversary’s air-defense picture, provide decoys and jamming, and create affordable combat mass. But the concept carries difficult engineering and operational trade-offs. Stealth can raise manufacturing and maintenance costs; long range, payload, sensors, and electronic-warfare equipment compete for weight and power; and autonomy must operate safely when communications are jammed or sensor data conflict.
Other unanswered issues include how many drones one pilot can supervise, who authorizes weapons release, how the aircraft handles ambiguous targets, and whether maintenance demands undermine the economic promise of an attritable force.
Bottom line
The most accurate description is that China unveiled a Valkyrie-like loyal-wingman-style UAV concept in 2021 and displayed a substantially redesigned FH-97A in 2022. The designs signaled Chinese interest in autonomous, crewed-uncrewed air combat, but the available public evidence does not establish that either aircraft had become an operational equivalent to the XQ-58A.
