On most Android phones, a factory reset from Settings and “Wipe data/factory reset” in Recovery aim for the same result: removing local user data and returning the phone to setup. The difference is mainly how you start the reset. Settings is the normal route when Android works; Recovery is an offline option when it does not. Recovery is not automatically a deeper wipe, and either route can leave ownership checks such as Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) in place.

Google’s Android reset guidance describes Settings as the usual route and hardware-button recovery as an alternative when Settings cannot be opened. Device-specific instructions from the manufacturer take precedence.
What a factory reset actually does
“Factory reset” is a consumer-facing description, not one universal technical procedure. In general, it removes accounts and personal data stored locally on the device, uninstalls apps and their local data, resets preferences, and returns the phone to its initial setup flow.
It does not usually delete information stored in your Google Account or another cloud service, and it does not necessarily remove your account from that service. Synced photos or contacts may return when you sign in or restore a backup. A reset is not a physical repair, does not necessarily roll Android back to the version that shipped with the phone, and should not be treated as a guaranteed forensic-grade sanitization of every storage cell.

Resetting from Android Settings
When you can unlock and use the phone, Settings is generally the best choice. A common menu path is Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset). On many Samsung devices, look under Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset. Names and locations vary by model, manufacturer software, and Android version; searching Settings for “factory reset” or “reset” can help.
- Open the reset option and review what the phone says will be erased.
- Enter the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password if requested. A device may also ask you to confirm an account or manufacturer-specific credential.
- Confirm the reset. Android will perform the wipe and restart at the initial setup screen.
This route is usually easier to review and less prone to selecting the wrong recovery-menu command. Because Android is running, it can also verify the user through the normal interface and handle account-removal steps more predictably. That is why Settings is normally preferable before selling or returning a working phone. It is not infallible: corrupted software, failing storage, an interrupted reset, or a vendor-specific bug can still cause problems.
Resetting from Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode is a separate, minimal boot environment. It can provide basic maintenance options even when Android itself will not start fully. Depending on the phone, its menu may include restart, update, and Wipe data/factory reset. Touch input may not work; volume and power buttons often navigate and confirm.

Use Recovery when the phone is stuck in a boot loop, crashes before Settings opens, or otherwise cannot reach the normal interface. The procedure is model-specific: button combinations differ, and some devices require a USB connection or extra confirmation. Do not rely on a button sequence for a different model. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device.
- Power off the phone if possible, then use the manufacturer-documented method to enter Recovery.
- Select Wipe data/factory reset (or the equivalent wording) and carefully confirm.
- When the wipe completes, choose Reboot system now if prompted, then follow setup instructions.
A standard Android Recovery wipe primarily resets user data and settings; it does not necessarily download or install the latest Android release. A manufacturer repair utility that reinstalls firmware is a different operation.
Is Recovery a deeper or more complete wipe?
Usually not in the way people mean. Recovery’s advantage is that it can operate when the main Android interface is unavailable, not that it guarantees stronger erasure. On many devices it invokes the same or a closely related data-wipe mechanism as the Settings flow. But manufacturers can differ in how they handle partitions, encryption, verification, and account protection, so it is too strong to claim the two routes are technically identical on every phone.

“Hard reset” and “master reset” are often informal names for a factory reset, not proof of a separate, more secure wiping standard. If your goal is to transfer a phone safely, follow the manufacturer’s transfer or reset instructions and remove your accounts normally where possible. If you need high-assurance data sanitization, do not assume a consumer reset meets that standard.
FRP: the important security difference
Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is an anti-theft measure. After some resets—particularly resets performed outside the normal authenticated flow—the phone may require a Google Account previously associated with it before setup can continue. FRP is separate from the screen lock: wiping the phone does not bypass ownership verification. Exact behavior depends on the phone, Android version, vendor software, account state, and reset route.
Before resetting, make sure you know the Google Account username and password used on the phone. Google advises waiting 24 hours after changing that password before performing a factory reset. A recently changed or forgotten password can leave you unable to activate the phone immediately afterward.

If you are selling or giving away the phone, back it up, remove Google and manufacturer accounts through the normal Settings flow where possible, then reset it. Afterward, confirm that the device reaches setup without asking for the previous owner’s credentials. If you are buying a used device and it requests someone else’s account, ask the legitimate previous owner to remove the account or complete activation. Do not treat a reset as a way to bypass this protection.
Before you reset: checklist
- Back up what matters: photos, videos, contacts, messages, documents, and app-specific data. Confirm the backup completed and can be accessed.
- Check account access: know the Google Account credentials and screen-lock code. If you changed the Google password recently, observe Google’s 24-hour guidance.
- Protect sign-in access: save two-factor recovery codes and plan how to move authenticator, banking, password-manager, and messaging apps.
- Prepare the device: keep it connected to power and ensure Wi-Fi or mobile data will be available for setup. Google’s general guidance recommends charging to at least 70% and notes a reset can take up to an hour; these are recommendations, not guarantees for every model.
- For a transfer: remove the physical SIM and microSD card. A phone reset may not erase a removable card, so remove it or handle it separately.
- Check management: if a work or school profile is installed, ask the administrator about the correct return or reset process. An organization may re-enroll a managed device after reset.
Which route should you choose?
- The phone works and unlocks: use Settings. It is the straightforward, authenticated route.
- You are selling or returning it: back up, remove accounts through Settings where possible, reset, and verify it no longer asks for your credentials.
- Android will not boot or Settings cannot open: use the manufacturer’s Recovery instructions, or a supported repair tool if the problem calls for firmware repair rather than a data wipe.
- You forgot the screen lock: Recovery may let you erase the phone, but it will not defeat FRP; expect to need the previously associated Google Account afterward.
- Important data is not backed up: do not reset yet. Seek manufacturer or qualified data-recovery advice first. Modern encryption can make recovery impossible without unlock credentials.
- You suspect hardware failure: diagnose the hardware before erasing. A reset will not repair failing storage, a battery, display, modem, or motherboard.
Try less-destructive fixes first
A reset can help when a problem comes from damaged user settings, a troublesome app, or a corrupted user-data environment. It may not fix failing storage, a hardware defect, a system or firmware problem, or software that persists outside the user-data area. If the phone still works, consider restarting, installing updates, removing recently installed apps, trying Safe Mode if supported, freeing storage, or using the manufacturer’s diagnostic tools. Samsung also recommends trying troubleshooting options such as Safe Mode before a factory reset.
Windows and Apple devices use different reset flows
Windows: “Reset this PC” is available from Settings or the Windows Recovery Environment, but the selected options matter more than where you launch it. In Windows 11, go to Settings → System → Recovery → Reset PC. Windows 10 uses Start → Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → Get started; Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025.

Windows offers choices such as Keep my files (preserves personal files but removes apps and resets settings) or Remove everything. Depending on the version and device, you may also see Cloud download or Local reinstall. The optional Clean data setting makes deleted files harder for ordinary users to recover, but Microsoft says it does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards. An encrypted PC may require its BitLocker recovery key when reset through Windows Recovery. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC instructions and Windows recovery options.
iPhone and iPad: Apple’s normal on-device option is Erase All Content and Settings. A computer-based restore using Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on a PC is a separate route for devices that cannot be erased normally or need software restoration; it erases content and installs the latest available software under Apple’s process. Prepare a backup and handle Find My and Activation Lock before transferring ownership. Follow Apple’s restore instructions; this is not the same procedure as Android Recovery Mode.

If the reset fails or the device asks for an account
- It asks for the former Google Account: the reset may have succeeded and FRP may be doing its job. Use the associated account or have the previous owner remove it through the legitimate process.
- It returns to Recovery or loops at startup: keep the device powered, consult the model-specific support instructions, and consider a manufacturer repair tool. Repeated wipes are unlikely to fix failing storage.
- The reset was interrupted: a drained battery or forced restart can leave a device unable to boot normally. Avoid interrupting a reset; follow the manufacturer’s recovery guidance if it stalls.
- It freezes or repeatedly fails during the wipe: suspect storage or another hardware fault and contact the manufacturer or a repair provider.
- A Windows reset appears to have a black screen: Microsoft warns that this can last for an extended period; manually restarting during the process can cause it to fail. For encrypted systems, locate the BitLocker recovery key before proceeding.
