Start by checking Apple’s service status, then test your internet connection and FaceTime settings. If the problem is “Waiting for Activation,” use the separate activation steps below; if only one person is affected, test another contact before changing your iPhone. Try each relevant step and make a FaceTime call again before moving on.
Check whether FaceTime is down
Check Apple’s System Status for FaceTime. If Apple reports an outage, wait for service to return; resetting your iPhone or network settings will not fix an Apple-side outage. A green status means Apple reports FaceTime as available, but it does not rule out a local network, carrier, account, or activation problem.
Try the quick checks
- Confirm internet access. Open Safari and load a website. FaceTime needs Wi-Fi or cellular data; a working cellular voice connection by itself is not enough.
- Compare connections. If you are on Wi-Fi, temporarily turn Wi-Fi off and test using cellular data. Or try another Wi-Fi network or a personal hotspot. If neither Safari nor FaceTime connects, troubleshoot the internet connection first.
- Refresh the connection. Turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart and update. Restart the iPhone, then check Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update.
- Test another person. Try a different contact to see whether the fault is limited to one caller.
Apple notes that slow or congested Wi-Fi or cellular connections can cause poor FaceTime quality, alerts, or dropped calls. Moving closer to the router, trying a less congested network, or pausing large downloads can help. See Apple’s FaceTime troubleshooting guidance.
Make sure FaceTime is enabled and set up for the right address
- Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime. Older iOS versions may show a different settings layout.
- Turn on FaceTime.
- Under You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At, check that the phone number or email address other people are using is selected.
- Under Caller ID, choose the number or email address you want to appear on outgoing calls.
FaceTime can use a phone number, an Apple Account email address, or both. If a caller is using an address that is not enabled on your iPhone, their call may not reach you. Apple’s current instructions are at FaceTime settings and calling on iPhone.

Fix “Waiting for Activation”
Phone-number activation can take time and depends on your carrier as well as your iPhone. Try this sequence:
- Confirm that Wi-Fi or cellular data works by loading a website in Safari.
- Install any available iOS update at Settings > General > Software Update.
- Set the time automatically: open Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically.
- Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime, turn FaceTime off, wait briefly, then turn it on again. Check that the intended phone number is selected.
- Restart the iPhone and check whether activation completes.
- Make sure the line can send and receive SMS. Contact your carrier if SMS is unavailable or if you need to ask whether international SMS is required or blocked.
Apple says phone-number activation for iMessage and FaceTime requires SMS, and the carrier may charge for the activation message. Verification can take up to 24 hours. If the phone number still will not activate after that, contact the carrier about SMS and line provisioning; contact Apple if the carrier confirms the line is working. Apple lists messages such as “Waiting for activation,” “Activation unsuccessful,” and “An error occurred during activation” in its activation troubleshooting guidance.

If this began after a new iPhone, SIM, or eSIM
Open Settings > Cellular and make sure the intended line is turned on. With multiple SIMs or eSIMs, confirm you are using the right line. Then check Settings > Apps > FaceTime and select the intended number under the FaceTime contact options. A line can show service while the wrong number is selected for FaceTime.
If FaceTime is missing
A missing app, a restricted feature, and a service that is unavailable in your region are different problems. Check them in this order:
- Search the App Library for FaceTime. If the app was deleted, redownload FaceTime from the App Store; Apple says deleting it prevents FaceTime calls and SharePlay until it is reinstalled.
- Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps & Features and allow FaceTime and Camera.
- On a child’s iPhone, review Screen Time communication limits and Downtime. These controls can restrict communication through FaceTime and other apps.
- If the iPhone belongs to a school or employer, ask the administrator whether device management restricts FaceTime.
FaceTime and FaceTime audio are not available in every country, region, or through every network provider. See Apple’s guidance on Screen Time communication limits and its FaceTime availability and troubleshooting information.

When FaceTime works on Wi-Fi but not cellular
- Open Settings > Cellular and make sure cellular data is on and FaceTime is enabled in the app list.
- Check that the intended SIM or eSIM line is enabled and has an active data plan.
- Test another app in the same location. If other apps also cannot use cellular data, the issue is more likely to involve coverage, the plan, or carrier provisioning.
- Look for SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching. These indicate the iPhone is not connected to its normal cellular network; contact your carrier if the connection does not return.
Apple explains the SOS and SOS only status at About SOS, No Service, and Searching on iPhone. If a carrier change, number port, account suspension, or SIM/eSIM change preceded the problem, ask the carrier to check the line and data provisioning.
Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
| What happens | Likely area to check | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| “Waiting for Activation” | SMS, carrier line, date and time, or activation | Confirm automatic date and time and that SMS works. |
| FaceTime is missing | Deleted app, restrictions, device management, or regional availability | Search the App Library, then check Screen Time. |
| Works on Wi-Fi only | Cellular permission, coverage, data plan, or carrier | Enable FaceTime under Settings > Cellular. |
| Calls fail to everyone | Internet, outage, settings, activation, or account | Check System Status and test Safari. |
| Calls fail to one person | The other person’s device, connection, account, or contact address | Call a different contact. |
| Call connects, but video is black | Camera, in-call controls, or network | Test the Camera app and another connection. |
| Video freezes or calls drop | Weak or congested connection | Try another Wi-Fi network or cellular data. |
| SOS, No Service, or Searching | Cellular connection or carrier account | Refresh the connection and contact the carrier if it persists. |
If only one person, incoming calls, or video is affected
Only one contact cannot connect
Try a different contact before changing your settings. If other calls work, ask the affected person to check their FaceTime connection, enabled phone number or email address, restrictions, and activation. The issue may be on their device or account rather than yours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIncoming calls fail but outgoing calls work
Check that the address the caller is using is selected under You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At. Also check blocked contacts and whether Focus or Screen Time settings are affecting alerts or communication. Focus may affect notifications; it does not by itself prove that the FaceTime connection is broken.

Audio works but video does not, or the call has no sound
Check the camera and microphone controls during the call, remove anything covering the camera or microphone, and test them outside FaceTime: use the Camera app for video and Voice Memos for sound. If either also fails in other apps, investigate device permissions or hardware rather than assuming FaceTime is the cause. A slow connection can also affect video without indicating a hardware fault.

For a connectivity problem, open Settings > General > About and wait briefly to see whether an update to carrier settings is offered. Apple recommends checking carrier settings and iOS updates when cellular or calling issues occur; see Apple’s cellular troubleshooting steps.
Work, school, hotel, and public networks, as well as VPNs, security apps, parental-control services, and other filters, can interfere with real-time calls. Temporarily disable a VPN or filter if you are allowed to, or test on a different network. If FaceTime works elsewhere, ask the network administrator or provider for help. Router and firewall changes are network-specific; changing DNS or IPv6 settings is not a universal fix.

Reset network settings only after simpler checks fail
This step is an escalation, not a routine fix for a missing app, activation SMS problem, or Apple service outage. To try it, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, VPN settings, and APN settings, so you will need to reconnect and reconfigure those afterward. It does not erase your personal content. Apple describes this step at its cellular troubleshooting page.
When to contact your carrier or Apple
- Contact your carrier if activation SMS will not send or arrive; cellular data fails in other apps; the iPhone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching; or the problem began after a carrier, account, SIM, or eSIM change. Ask about outages, account blocks, SMS capability, and line provisioning.
- Contact Apple if FaceTime remains unavailable after the network, settings, activation, and update checks; you cannot sign in to the Apple Account used for FaceTime; or the camera or microphone also fails in other apps. Apple’s support and repair options are at Apple iPhone repair and service.
Before contacting support, note the exact error message, whether you were on Wi-Fi or cellular, whether the problem affects all contacts, and whether camera or microphone tests work in other apps. Do not install unofficial “FaceTime repair” apps, configuration profiles, or firmware tools.
