FaceTime can drop even when the Wi‑Fi icon shows a strong signal. The real cause may be unreliable internet access, congestion, router or firewall rules, a VPN or security filter, incorrect FaceTime settings, the other caller’s connection, or an Apple service problem. First compare the call on another network; that quickly tells you whether to troubleshoot the iPhone or iPad or the network.
Run this two-minute isolation test first
- Check Apple’s System Status page for a FaceTime or broader service incident: Apple System Status. A confirmed outage cannot be repaired with local settings.
- While connected to the problem Wi‑Fi, open Safari and several ordinary websites, then try another internet app. If they also fail, troubleshoot the internet connection before FaceTime.
- Make another FaceTime call using a different trusted Wi‑Fi network or a phone hotspot. If available, test cellular data as well. A hotspot uses mobile data and may be subject to carrier limits.
- Ask the other caller to repeat the test. FaceTime quality depends on both ends of the call.

Fix FaceTime and the iPhone or iPad
Verify FaceTime, account, and restrictions
- On current releases, open Settings > Apps > FaceTime. Older iOS or iPadOS versions may show Settings > FaceTime.
- Make sure FaceTime is enabled, the intended Apple Account is signed in, and the correct phone number or email address is selected.
- If testing without Wi‑Fi, allow FaceTime to use cellular data. Check Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and FaceTime.
- Check that Screen Time has not restricted FaceTime. If the screen says “Waiting for Activation,” turn FaceTime off, restart, and turn it on again. Apple’s sign-in and activation guidance is at FaceTime sign-in and activation on iPad.
Install the latest software update
Open Settings > General > Software Update, install the latest update offered for the device, restart, and test again. Apple places updating near the start of its FaceTime troubleshooting and Wi‑Fi troubleshooting instructions.
Correct the clock
Open Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. An incorrect date, time, or time zone can interfere with authentication, especially after travel, a restore, or manual clock changes.

Restart the device and network equipment
- End the FaceTime call and restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Unplug the modem and router, allowing them to shut down according to the manufacturer or ISP instructions.
- Reconnect them and wait for internet service to return, then test FaceTime.
Restarting is low risk but may only mask congestion, firmware, or ISP instability.

Improve the Wi‑Fi connection
Remove congestion and range problems
- Pause 4K streaming, large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and video uploads while testing. Apple says slow Wi‑Fi or other people streaming on the same network can cause warnings, choppy video, black screens, and dropped calls.
- Move next to the router and place a test call. Mesh systems can behave differently as a device moves between access points.
- If the router exposes separate networks, try its other frequency. Apple specifically suggests trying another frequency, such as 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz. Neither band is universally best: 5 GHz is often faster nearby, while 2.4 GHz generally travels farther.
- Check another device on the same network. A strong Wi‑Fi signal does not prove that the router’s internet connection is healthy.
Restart and update the router
Restart the modem, router, or mesh system using its normal procedure, then check the manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates. If every device loses internet access, contact the ISP. If only this iPhone or iPad fails and other networks work, Apple support is more appropriate.
Check VPNs, security, and filtering software
VPN clients, enterprise profiles, antivirus “web protection,” parental controls, DNS filters, and other network extensions can interfere with FaceTime even when ordinary websites load. Apple recommends temporarily uninstalling VPN or security software, restarting the device, and testing—not merely tapping an in-app pause switch. If removing the software restores calls, reinstall or re-enable it only if necessary and contact its vendor for a compatible configuration. Removing required employer security may violate policy or reduce protection, so involve your administrator first.

School, work, hotel, apartment, airport, and public networks may use captive portals or restrictive firewalls. A network can permit web browsing while blocking FaceTime’s real-time media traffic. Ask the administrator rather than disabling router security or forwarding ports yourself.

Apple lists these FaceTime ports for administrators: 80 TCP, 443 TCP, 3478–3497 UDP, 5223 TCP, 16384–16387 UDP, and 16393–16402 UDP. Apple also warns that NAT behavior, port mapping, SIP handling, and dynamic media ports can matter. The administrator should review Apple’s FaceTime and iMessage firewall guidance; ordinary users should not expose ports unnecessarily.
Forget the network, then reset network settings only if needed
Forget and rejoin one Wi‑Fi network
- Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Tap the information button beside the network.
- Choose Forget This Network, confirm, and rejoin it with the password.
This is less disruptive than a full reset, but it cannot repair a faulty router or ISP connection.

Reset all network settings as a late-stage device fix
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad (the wording can vary by device).
- Tap Reset, then Reset Network Settings, and authenticate if asked.
- Rejoin Wi‑Fi and test FaceTime.
This does not erase photos, apps, messages, or other personal content. It does remove saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN-related network settings, so have the Wi‑Fi password ready. Ask a school or business administrator before resetting a managed device. A reset cannot fix an ISP outage or a restrictive router.

Choose the right support path
- Contact Apple when FaceTime fails across multiple networks or the device cannot connect reliably to any Wi‑Fi network.
- Contact the ISP when several household devices lose internet access or the modem/router cannot maintain service.
- Contact the router vendor or network administrator when FaceTime works elsewhere but fails only on one home or managed network, especially after firewall, NAT, mesh, or firmware changes.
- Contact the VPN or security-software vendor when calls work after that product is removed but you need to keep using it.
FaceTime is an internet audio and video service; it is not the same as carrier Wi‑Fi Calling for ordinary phone calls. Wi‑Fi Calling has separate carrier requirements described by Apple at Wi‑Fi Calling. FaceTime availability can also vary by country, region, and carrier; Apple’s FaceTime support page lists the applicable limitations.
