If F4 does not work in Excel, first check what you expect it to do. In Windows desktop Excel, F4 can cycle a selected reference while you edit a formula, or repeat the last repeatable action when you are not editing a reference. On a laptop, Fn+F4 may be needed to send the standard F4 key. On Mac, try Command+T for reference cycling; in Excel for the web, check for browser shortcut conflicts.
Identify which F4 function you need

Windows desktop Excel documents both behaviors: F4 repeats the last command when possible, and cycles reference types when a reference is selected in a formula. Microsoft’s Excel shortcut list describes the keyboard behavior. If you simply select a worksheet cell and press F4, you have not selected a reference inside a formula.
Fix reference cycling in Windows desktop Excel
- Select a cell containing a formula, such as
=B2*C2. - Press F2 to edit the cell, or click in the formula bar.
- Select the reference text you want to change, such as
B2. Selecting the worksheet cell alone is not enough. - Press F4 repeatedly. Depending on its starting form, the reference cycles through
$B$2,B$2,$B2, andB2. - Press Enter to commit the formula.
Microsoft’s instructions likewise say to select the reference in the formula and press F4. See how to create or change a cell reference. A dollar sign fixes a row or column when a formula is copied: $B$2 fixes both, B$2 fixes the row, and $B2 fixes the column. Microsoft explains relative, absolute, and mixed references.

On some laptops, the top row sends media or system commands instead of standard function keys. Try Fn+F4 while editing a formula reference. If that works, Excel is receiving the shortcut and the keyboard’s function-key mode was the obstacle.

- Use the keyboard’s Fn Lock or F-Lock control, if present. On some keyboards the toggle is Fn+Esc, but this is not universal.
- Check the laptop maker’s keyboard utility or firmware settings for a standard-function-key option.
- Remember that changing Fn Lock can affect the whole function-key row, not just Excel.
Microsoft recommends trying F-Lock or Fn when F4 does not appear to work. Read Microsoft’s F4 repeat and function-key guidance.
If you meant repeat or redo an action
F4 repeats only actions Excel can repeat; it does not replay every operation. On Windows, try Ctrl+Y as an alternative for repeat or redo, depending on the current state. On Mac, Microsoft documents Command+Y for redo/repeat behavior. A failed repeat can mean the preceding action is not repeatable, rather than that the key is broken. Microsoft’s repeat and undo guidance also explains that Repeat can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar if you want a mouse-accessible command.

Mac Excel: try the Mac reference shortcut
Do not assume Windows F4 instructions apply identically to Excel for Mac. Microsoft’s current Mac reference-shortcut page documents Command+T to cycle reference types in supported versions. Another Microsoft Mac page documents F4 for the same task, so the instructions differ across its documentation. Try Command+T while editing and selecting a reference; if that does not work, try Fn+F4, or F4 alone if your Mac is set to use standard function keys.

Excel for the web: check browser shortcut settings
Excel for the web runs in a browser, so the browser may capture a key combination instead of passing it to Excel. Confirm the workbook is in Editing mode, then inspect Excel’s shortcut settings:
- Open Help > Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Search for the shortcut you need.
- Select Override browser shortcuts.
- Select Show Overrides, then close the dialog.
Shortcut behavior can differ from desktop Excel; use the web app’s listed shortcut and override controls rather than assuming F4 behaves identically. Microsoft documents the browser override setting.

Make sure Excel is actually editing the formula
Pressing F4 before entering formula-edit mode can trigger Repeat instead of reference cycling. Select the formula cell and press F2, then select the reference in the formula text. You can also click directly in the formula bar. Microsoft documents F2 as the edit-cell shortcut. See Excel’s keyboard shortcuts.

If direct in-cell editing is disabled on Windows, use the formula bar, or enable it at File > Options > Advanced > Editing options > Allow editing directly in cells. Microsoft explains cell editing options.

Use dollar signs manually if the shortcut is unavailable
You do not need to repair the keyboard before locking a reference. Type the desired reference directly in the formula:
=A1keeps both row and column relative.=$A$1fixes the column and row.=A$1fixes the row only.=$A1fixes the column only.
This is a reliable fallback on any platform, though editing longer formulas by hand can be slower and more error-prone than cycling a selected reference.
Isolate a keyboard or Excel conflict
Use these tests in order so you do not reinstall Excel or change settings unnecessarily:

If the key does not send F4 there either, check the physical keyboard, Fn mode, keyboard utility, or hardware.
- Try Fn+F4. If that works, adjust the keyboard’s function-key mode.
- Test in a new blank workbook. If the shortcut works there but not in one workbook, check whether that workbook is read-only or whether you can edit its formula. Protection may block editing, but it is not established as a general cause of F4 failure.
- Test Excel in Safe Mode on Windows. Save your work, close Excel, then start it with
excel /safe. If F4 works in Safe Mode, an add-in, startup file, or customization may be involved. Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions explain how to start Office apps this way. - Disable add-ins one at a time. In normal Excel, go to File > Options > Add-ins, choose COM Add-ins or Excel Add-ins in the Manage list, select Go, then clear add-ins and test. Re-enable them one by one to identify a conflict.

- F4 changes brightness or volume: the keyboard is likely sending a hardware command; try Fn+F4.
