If a Mid‑2012 MacBook Pro (9,2) running Arch Linux loses 5%–90% of packets over Wi‑Fi while Ethernet remains clean, the evidence points first to the Mac’s wireless path—not automatically to the ISP. In the documented case, loss appeared mainly at the local gateway, followed the laptop across multiple networks, and did not affect other clients. That pattern implicates the Broadcom card, antenna, RF conditions, or the Linux driver and firmware stack. It does not prove one universal software fix.
Use the workflow below to identify where the loss occurs before changing packages or replacing hardware.
What “BRM4331” means
“BRM4331” is the identifier used in the original report. It likely refers to a Broadcom BCM4331-family chip commonly found in older Apple AirPort cards, but the exact card revision and PCI subsystem ID must be verified on the affected machine.
These are separate layers:
- Chipset: Broadcom BCM4331-family silicon.
- Card: The Apple-compatible PCIe wireless module installed in the MacBook.
- Linux driver: Usually
b43for this family, subject to hardware support. - Firmware: Files loaded by the driver; changing firmware is not the same as changing the driver.

ip linkDo not assume that Broadcom’s proprietary wl driver is an interchangeable replacement. In the original case, wl was reported as unsupported by the card and associated unreliably.

First prove whether the loss is local Wi‑Fi loss
MTR can mislead because routers may rate-limit ICMP replies. A percentage shown for an intermediate hop is not automatically end-to-end packet loss. Validate the result with the gateway, an Internet address, and real application traffic.
Find and test the default gateway

The case that motivated this guide reported approximately 5%–90% loss at the first hop on multiple Wi‑Fi networks, unaffected neighboring devices, and 0.00% loss over Ethernet. That makes a single bad router or ISP-wide fault less likely, while leaving hardware, RF, and Linux compatibility open.
Capture a reproducible baseline
Record versions and state before changing anything:

Check the loaded driver and firmware

The original report compared b43-firmware-classic with b43-firmware and saw no apparent improvement. Treat that as evidence against a guaranteed package-only fix, not proof that firmware can never matter.

- Change one item only.
- Reboot and confirm the loaded driver.
- Repeat the same 100-packet gateway test under comparable conditions.
- Keep a rollback path and avoid permanently pinning obsolete, security-sensitive packages.
A historical Arch discussion associated a possible regression with wpa_supplicant 1.7. The author tried version 1:1.6-12 without an apparent fix. This is a historical hypothesis, not a current universal remedy; do not install a decade-old supplicant blindly. See the original case discussion.

Separate radio bands and RF conditions
Multiple networks make one-router failure less likely, but they do not eliminate congestion, channel compatibility, antenna damage, or interference.
- Test close to the access point.
- Use a 2.4 GHz-only SSID, then a 5 GHz-only SSID.
- On 2.4 GHz, try a fixed 20 MHz channel.
- On 5 GHz, test a non-DFS channel near the access point.
- Temporarily use a clean WPA2-Personal network for compatibility testing.
- Try a phone hotspot.
- Disable VPN software for one run.
- Disconnect USB 3 peripherals, docks, displays, and suspect power supplies.
- Repeat after a cold boot and after suspend/resume.
- Turn Bluetooth off for one controlled comparison.
Five GHz is not automatically better: it is often less congested but has shorter range and greater attenuation.
Inspect wireless statistics

A strong signal reading does not prove a healthy link; retries, noise, firmware resets, or antenna-diversity failures can still cause severe loss.

iw dev <wifi-interface> set power_save offRepeat the gateway test. If it helps, make the setting persistent only after confirming your distribution’s supported NetworkManager configuration. Disabling power saving can reduce battery life and may not survive reboot.
Use macOS or a live Linux system as a control
If macOS is installed, join the problem network, hold Option, click the Wi‑Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Apple says the utility analyzes the connection without changing network settings. Its compressed report is typically written to /var/tmp, with a name beginning WirelessDiagnostics and ending .tar.gz. See Apple’s instructions.
- macOS stable, Arch unstable: Linux kernel, firmware, driver, NetworkManager, or supplicant compatibility becomes more likely.
- Both operating systems fail across networks: Card, antenna, or RF problems rise to the top.
- Only one band or location fails: RF conditions remain plausible.
A live Linux image with a different kernel is another useful comparison. Do not treat it as proof by itself; keep the access point, distance, band, and test count consistent.

Hardware isolation and repair threshold
Before opening the MacBook, bypass the internal radio with a known Linux-compatible USB Wi‑Fi adapter or use Ethernet. If the external adapter works normally from the same position while the internal card continues losing gateway packets, the internal card or antenna path is strongly implicated.

Physical inspection should come later:
- Shut down and disconnect power.
- Inspect card seating and antenna connectors.
- Look for pinched, torn, or badly routed antenna cables.
- Photograph cable routing before disassembly.
- Use a model-specific repair guide and verify replacement-card compatibility.
Evidence for hardware includes failures under both macOS and Linux, changes with lid angle, unexpectedly weak close-range signal, repeated beacon loss or PHY resets, and normal operation through Ethernet or an external adapter. A replacement internal card is not guaranteed to solve a Linux-only problem; check the exact connector, antenna layout, PCI ID, and driver support first.
Practical workarounds
- Ethernet: The most dependable immediate option; the reported case measured 0.00% loss over Ethernet.
- USB Wi‑Fi adapter: Avoids opening the MacBook, but chipset and kernel support vary. Verify Linux support before buying.
- Phone hotspot: A useful second access point and diagnostic control, though not always a permanent solution.
- Internal card repair or replacement: Appropriate when cross-OS and external-adapter tests support hardware failure.
- Router replacement: Consider only when multiple clients, wired tests, or gateway behavior implicate the router.
What the original case establishes
The Linux Foundation discussion documents a genuine Mid‑2012 MacBook Pro 9,2 case with a BRM4331-labelled card, severe Wi‑Fi loss, first-hop concentration, multiple affected networks, clean Ethernet, unsuccessful firmware-package comparison, an unreliable wl experiment, and an apparently ineffective historical supplicant downgrade. It does not document a confirmed final repair, complete PCI and kernel data, macOS results, or a universal command that fixes every BCM4331-family MacBook.
The shortest reliable path is therefore: test the gateway, compare Ethernet and a second access point, inventory the exact driver and firmware stack, separate bands, test power saving, compare macOS or a live Linux system, and only then choose an external adapter, card repair, or replacement.
