Use the workflow that matches where your table lives. If you have HTML source or an .html/.htm file, paste or upload it to an HTML-table converter, inspect the detected table, and export CSV or XLSX. If the table is on a public webpage and you want a refreshable connection, use Excel’s Data from Web (Power Query) connector, select a table in Navigator, transform it if necessary, and load it into the workbook.

These methods are not interchangeable: a pasted-source parser cannot fetch a URL, while Excel’s connector is designed to connect to a URL. Neither automatically turns every visual grid into a real HTML table.

Choose the right extraction path

Your starting point Best first choice What you get Main limitation
Copied table markup or page HTML Browser HTML-table converter CSV, XLSX and sometimes JSON, TSV, Markdown or clipboard output You must obtain the source yourself; a parser may not see JavaScript-created data
Saved .html or .htm file Upload to a converter Previewed tables, often one sheet per table in XLSX Images and CSS-dependent presentation may be omitted
Public webpage URL Excel Data from Web (Power Query) Workbook data that can be transformed and refreshed Requires an internet connection and a compatible Microsoft 365/Excel edition

Method 1: Paste or upload HTML into an online converter

1. Obtain the actual table markup

For a table you can copy, use the page’s copy function and paste into a converter that accepts table content. For more control, view the page source or save the page as HTML, then upload the .html or .htm file. A tool such as XLSX.com documents all three inputs: selected table, HTML source, and saved file.

Do not assume that what looks like a table is a <table>. Many dashboards build grids from <div> elements; a basic HTML-table parser will not identify those as tables. A table rendered only after JavaScript runs can also be absent from the original server-delivered HTML.

2. Select the intended table

Converters differ in how they handle multiple tables. Some detect every table and let you choose; others may recognize only a first or selected table. Check the preview before exporting. Confirm that the header row is present, that the first and last records appear, and that unrelated navigation or footer tables have not been included.

3. Inspect merged cells and missing values

rowspan and colspan change the rectangular shape expected by CSV and spreadsheets. ByteTools says its converter expands both attributes. Comma Reports says it expands colspan but not rowspan. XLSX.com warns that merged headers can require realignment. When a preview has shifted columns, compare the source markup and repair the header or choose a converter with the structure handling you need.

4. Export and preserve delimiters

Choose CSV for a simple, portable handoff; choose XLSX when you need workbook sheets, formatting or later Power Query work. CSV must quote fields containing commas, quotation marks or line breaks. ByteTools and Comma Reports document CSV quoting behavior, but you should still open the result and inspect a few records.

5. Validate the file

  • Compare the exported row count with the source or preview.
  • Check column names, including duplicate or blank headers.
  • Inspect the first, middle and last rows.
  • Verify identifiers with leading zeroes; spreadsheet auto-conversion can remove them.
  • Check dates, decimal separators and number formats before calculations.
  • Open cells containing commas, quotes and line breaks to confirm they remain in one field.
  • Look for hidden text: parsers may read text hidden by CSS even though it was not visible in the browser.

Method 2: Import a webpage URL with Excel’s web connector

Microsoft calls this workflow From Web or Get Data From Web. It uses Power Query, requires internet access, and is described by Microsoft as part of an Office 365 subscription. Labels and availability can vary by Excel version, so confirm the commands in your installation.

  1. In Excel, open the Data tab and choose From Web (sometimes shown as Get Data > From Other Sources > From Web).
  2. Enter the webpage URL and submit it.
  3. In Navigator, review Suggested Tables and any detected table entries. Select a table to preview its rows and columns.
  4. Choose Transform Data to open Power Query Editor, or Load to place the result directly in a worksheet.
  5. In Power Query, set data types, remove unwanted columns, promote the correct header row, fill or replace values, and then load the query.
  6. Use Data > Refresh All later to request the connected webpage again. Refresh results depend on the page remaining accessible and structurally compatible.

When Suggested Tables are wrong

Microsoft’s connector also documents Add Table Using Examples. Provide sample values from the page and let Power Query derive a custom table. This is useful when automatic detection misses a layout, but inspect the generated steps: a page redesign can change the inferred pattern.

Multiple tables and irregular rows

Connector documentation describes multiple HTML tables becoming separate workbook sheets and notes repairs such as padding rows with extra or missing cells and making duplicate column names unique. Treat those repairs as transformation decisions, not proof that the source was clean. Rename columns and set types explicitly in Power Query when the output will feed formulas or reports.

Online converter versus Excel connector

Decision point Paste/upload converter Excel web connector
Input Selected table, HTML source or local file Webpage URL (and, in some connector scenarios, HTML containing a URL)
Table selection Depends on the converter; some expose multiple detected tables Navigator lists detected and suggested tables
Refresh Export again manually Power Query connection can be refreshed
Output CSV, XLSX and tool-specific formats Power Query table in an Excel workbook
Markup problems Rowspan/colspan and hidden text handling varies by vendor Can transform irregular results after import
Privacy basis Some vendors claim in-browser parsing and no upload; those are vendor statements URL data is retrieved by the Excel connection

Privacy language is not uniform. XLSX.com says its parser is inert, does not execute page scripts and does not load referenced assets. ByteTools and Comma Reports state that processing occurs in the browser and source is not sent away. These statements describe the vendors’ own products; they are not an independent security audit. Avoid pasting confidential HTML until you have reviewed the specific service’s policy and browser network behavior.

Why an export is incomplete or misaligned

The page uses a JavaScript grid

The visible rows may be fetched from an API after load, or the grid may be made from div elements. A source parser cannot extract data that is not in a real HTML table. Use Excel’s URL connector, obtain the underlying data export/API from the site owner, or save the post-rendered HTML from a permitted workflow.

Merged headers shift columns

Inspect rowspan and colspan in the source. If the tool expands only one of them, the resulting rows can have different widths. Select a converter with the documented behavior you need, then normalize headers in Excel or another spreadsheet.

Hidden or duplicate content appears

HTML parsers can read text hidden by CSS, including accessibility or responsive variants. Duplicate headers may be made unique automatically. Remove the unwanted fields and rename columns after previewing rather than silently accepting the first export.

Numbers behave like text

ExcelTool.io cautions that text-stored numbers may not work with SUM or AVERAGE. In Excel, select the column and change its data type in Power Query or use a conversion step. Preserve product codes and account numbers as text when leading zeroes matter.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No table detected Div-based layout or JavaScript rendering Check for a real <table>; use the URL connector or an official data export
Only one of several tables appears Converter recognizes a limited set Use a tool with table selection, or process each table separately
Columns are offset Rowspan/colspan or uneven row lengths Inspect markup, choose compatible structure handling, then realign headers
CSV opens in one column Delimiter or locale mismatch Import the CSV and specify its delimiter instead of double-clicking it
Quotes or line breaks split records Incorrect CSV quoting or an import setting Use an RFC-style quoted export and import with text qualifiers enabled
Refresh fails in Excel URL changed, access requires authentication, or page structure changed Open the URL, update the query or credentials, and recheck Navigator and Power Query steps

Performance, reliability and cost considerations

A small static table is usually fastest to paste and export. Large pages with many tables, nested markup or extensive scripts require more preview and cleanup. A connected Excel query is preferable when the source changes and you need repeatable refresh steps; a one-time CSV is simpler when it does not.

Do not treat a successful download as a complete data guarantee. Pagination, lazy loading, access controls and client-side filtering can leave rows out of the initial HTML. Record the source URL, extraction date, selected table and any transformation steps so another person can reproduce the result.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an HTML-to-CSV parser. It is useful when you need a visual, reproducible record of the page before investigating its table structure. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF:

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before capture, it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can I convert a URL directly to CSV without Excel?

A paste/upload converter generally cannot fetch a URL. Use Excel’s web connector or a service that explicitly supports URL retrieval, then validate the returned table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will images in table cells export?

Many HTML-table converters export cell text and structure rather than embedded images. Check the selected tool’s output specification; XLSX.com specifically lists omitted images.

Is CSV or XLSX better for analysis?

CSV is broadly interoperable and flat. XLSX is better when you need multiple sheets, workbook structure or Power Query transformations.

The Bottom Line

Use a paste/upload parser for static HTML you already possess; use Excel’s From Web connector when the source is a webpage URL and refreshability matters. Always preview merged cells, dynamic content, headers and data types before trusting the export.
