An external hard drive that spins up and then stops is not automatically dead. If it spins down only after several minutes of inactivity, it may be entering a normal sleep mode. If it stops immediately, repeatedly cycles, clicks, disappears, or fails to appear on multiple computers, suspect power delivery, the cable, the enclosure, or a failing drive.
If the files are important, avoid repeated reconnections, formatting, initialization, chkdsk, or repair tools until you know whether the drive is physically failing. The safest recovery approach is usually to copy or clone the data first and repair only a copy.
First, decide how valuable the data is
If the drive contains the only copy of irreplaceable photos, work, financial records, or legal files, limit troubleshooting to basic external checks. Clicking, grinding, beeping, or repeated spin-up/spin-down cycles are reasons to stop and consider a professional data-recovery service.

When the behavior is normal
External HDDs may stop their platters after inactivity, when the computer sleeps, after the drive is safely ejected, or when they are waiting for another read request. WD documents a 10-minute inactivity spin-down on many supported external drives, but sleep timing varies by model and utility settings (WD’s sleep-mode explanation).
It is probably normal if the drive:
- Works normally while files are being accessed.
- Spins down only after several quiet minutes.
- Wakes when you open a file or browse the volume.
- Remains visible in Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility.
It is not normal if it stops immediately after connection, repeatedly resets, vanishes during copying, or cannot be detected after basic connection tests.
What can cause an external hard drive to stop
Insufficient USB power
A portable 2.5-inch drive receives power through USB. A weak port, hub, dock, extension cable, or adapter may provide enough power for the LED and initial spin-up but not enough for sustained operation.

Connect the drive directly to the computer, bypassing hubs and docks, and try another built-in port. WD also recommends testing another computer and using the original or a high-quality replacement cable (WD Windows detection guidance).
WD gives model-specific guidance that some My Passport cables longer than 18 inches may prevent power-up (WD cable and power guidance). That is not a universal USB cable-length rule.

A defective cable, port, or adapter
A cable can fail intermittently even when its connector looks fine, the LED lights, or Windows plays the USB connection sound. Test the original cable, then a short, known-good cable with the correct connector and data standard. Test another direct port and, if possible, a second computer.
For a desktop 3.5-inch external drive with its own power brick, use the supplied adapter and test a different wall outlet. Do not substitute a generic adapter unless its voltage, polarity, connector, and current rating exactly match the enclosure.

A failed enclosure or USB bridge
The HDD mechanism may be healthy while the enclosure’s USB-to-SATA bridge or power circuitry has failed. This is more likely when the motor sounds normal but the computer sees no usable disk, or when the drive works intermittently as the cable or enclosure is moved.
A compatible replacement enclosure can be a reasonable test for a standard 3.5-inch SATA disk. Do not blindly remove the disk from a portable external drive, however. Some portable models use an integrated USB board, proprietary connections, or hardware encryption. The bare disk may not expose readable data when connected elsewhere.
A partition, filesystem, or mounting problem
If the physical disk remains visible to the operating system but the volume does not appear in File Explorer or Finder, the problem may be logical rather than mechanical. Possible states include RAW, unallocated, offline, uninitialized, or a healthy volume without a drive letter.

Do not format, initialize, delete partitions, or create a new volume if the files matter. Microsoft warns that formatting destroys data on the formatted volume (Microsoft Disk Management documentation).
A failing disk
Failing heads, bearings, spindle electronics, firmware, or magnetic media can all produce spin-up and shutdown symptoms. The sound alone cannot identify the failed component.
Warning signs include clicking, rhythmic ticking, scraping, grinding, beeping, severe slowness, disappearance during reads, repeated resets, or detection only occasionally. Software cannot repair failed mechanical hardware.
Safe checks before using repair tools
- Observe the timing. Note whether the drive stops after inactivity or immediately after connection.
- Listen carefully. A quiet spin-down is different from clicking, grinding, scraping, or repeated restarting.
- Check the LED. Record whether it stays lit after the motor stops.
- Connect directly. Bypass hubs, docks, extension leads, and adapters.
- Try another cable. Use a known-good, compatible data cable.
- Try another port and computer. This separates a host-side problem from a drive-side problem.
- Use the correct power source. Desktop drives should use the supplied power adapter and a reliable outlet.
A powered hub may help a bus-powered drive that works on one computer but not another. However, direct connection is the better first diagnostic because a hub can introduce another compatibility problem. It will not fix a clicking or mechanically failing disk.
Check the drive in Windows 10 or 11
Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and choosing Disk Management, or press Windows + R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Microsoft states that Disk Management works similarly in Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Microsoft’s documentation).

Look in the lower pane for the external disk, checking its model and capacity before changing anything:
- Healthy volume with a drive letter: The problem may be temporary, related to File Explorer, permissions, or the connection.
- Healthy volume without a drive letter: If the disk is stable and clearly identified, right-click the volume, select Change Drive Letter and Paths, choose Add, and assign a letter. Microsoft documents this procedure (Microsoft support).
- Offline: Do not bring an uncertain disk online until you have positively identified it and considered the data risk.
- RAW or unallocated: Do not format it or create a new volume if files are needed.
- Not listed: Focus on power, cable, port, enclosure, bridge electronics, firmware, or physical failure—not filesystem repair.
Also check Device Manager under Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers. This can show whether Windows detects the USB enclosure even when it cannot mount a usable disk. Seagate recommends checking Disk Management and then Device Manager (Seagate’s troubleshooting guidance).
Check the drive in macOS
- Open Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility.
- Choose View → Show All Devices.
- Check whether the physical device, container, and volume appear.
If the physical device is absent, inspect Apple menu → System Settings → General → System Report → USB. A USB enclosure that appears there without a usable disk can indicate a bridge, firmware, or drive problem.
If the drive is visible, stable, and the files are backed up, Disk Utility’s First Aid can check and repair filesystem and directory-structure errors. Apple recommends starting with the lowest-level volume and working upward through volumes, containers, and finally the physical device (Apple First Aid guidance).

When CHKDSK or First Aid is appropriate
chkdsk and Disk Utility First Aid are logical filesystem tools. They do not repair a failing motor, head, controller, enclosure, or magnetic surface.

Use them only when the disk is stable and the important data is backed up or already copied. Avoid chkdsk /f, chkdsk /r, formatting, initialization, and partition changes as first responses to a drive that is clicking, disappearing, or producing input/output errors. Microsoft documents that CHKDSK options can modify or repair the volume (Microsoft CHKDSK documentation).
If the drive becomes readable
Copy the irreplaceable files first. Do not begin by opening every folder, running a full media scan, or reorganizing the disk. Start with the files you cannot replace, then copy less important data.
If ordinary copying repeatedly fails, an experienced user can make a sector-level clone with GNU ddrescue. Its copy-first workflow is designed to preserve a failing source and resume with a mapfile; repairs should be performed on the clone, not the original (GNU ddrescue manual).

When to use a professional recovery lab
Choose professional recovery rather than more home testing when the data is irreplaceable, the drive clicks or grinds, it repeatedly resets, it vanishes during reads, or it is absent after direct-port, cable, power, and second-computer tests.
A lab may need specialized hardware, firmware work, donor components, or cleanroom procedures. Recovery software is suitable only when the operating system can communicate with the disk reliably; it cannot replace failed mechanical parts.
Start with the manufacturer’s official support or recovery portal. Seagate provides a Rescue Data Recovery pathway through its support site (Seagate Support). WD directs users to third-party recovery partners and states that it does not provide recovery services itself (WD support). Ask about evaluation fees, no-data/no-fee terms, encryption handling, shipping, and the return medium.
What to replace after recovery
- Replace a cable only if another cable demonstrably fixes the behavior.
- Replace a desktop power adapter only with a correctly matched model.
- Replace an enclosure when a compatible bridge works but the original does not, taking encryption risks into account.
- Replace the hard drive after any credible physical-failure symptoms, even if it temporarily works again.
- Keep at least one additional copy, preferably with an off-site or cloud copy for valuable files.

Stop immediately: clicking, grinding, scraping, beeping, repeated resetting, or irreplaceable data with no backup.
