ExplorerPatcher 22621.2361.58.1 is a genuine but historical release of the Windows shell customization utility, intended for the Windows 11 22H2-era shell. It fixed several taskbar, Start menu, and Explorer problems on specific builds, but it is not the version to install by default on a modern Windows 11 PC. For a current system, check the project’s official releases and compatibility notes first.
What ExplorerPatcher 22621.2361.58.1 is
ExplorerPatcher is an open-source utility that modifies parts of the Windows shell to restore or expose interface choices, including Windows 10-style taskbar behavior, taskbar labels and small icons, Start menu options, File Explorer changes, and Alt+Tab styles. It is not a Microsoft component or a Windows update. Because it integrates with shell components such as explorer.exe, it can be affected by Windows updates and may cause shell instability if the underlying implementation changes.
The official project changelog names this release family 22621.2361.58; the more specific 22621.2361.58.1 appears in software catalog metadata. The version string is not a complete Windows build number: 22621 identifies the Windows 11 22H2 build branch, 2361 is the OS build context, and 58 is the ExplorerPatcher revision. “Tested on” is not a promise that every later cumulative update or Windows release will work. Shell internals can change without a major Windows version number changing, and later releases may remove or alter legacy behavior that a patch depends on.
What this release fixed
The release notes describe fixes across several parts of the shell:
- Taskbar10: fixed cases where the Windows 10-style taskbar did not appear when Never combine was enabled on the newer taskbar; fixed an Explorer crash involving the pen menu on builds 22621.2134 and later; and fixed Wi-Fi flyout buttons on build 22621.
- Taskbar11: fixed a crash when right-clicking the new taskbar with Never combine enabled, and a bug that reset that setting on builds 22621.2361 and later.
- Start10: fixed Start menu folders and corrected cases where Show recently added apps and Show frequently used apps settings were not applied on builds 22621.2134 and later.
- File Explorer and shell stability: added an attempt to avoid crashes associated with newer Windows App SDK views and fixed a fallback lookup involving functions in
twinui.pcshell.dll, affecting Win+X and Windows 10 Alt+Tab behavior on builds 22621 and later.
These are fixes for particular defects, not a guarantee that every ExplorerPatcher feature works on every Windows 11 build.

Check your Windows build before installing
- Press Win + R, enter
winver, and press Enter. - Note the Windows version and OS build shown in the dialog.
- Check whether the computer uses x64 or ARM64 Windows; the installer architecture matters.
- Compare your build with the version-specific notes on the official Releases page. Do not assume that a release tested on 22H2-era builds supports a later release just because both are called Windows 11.
The project’s later release history includes compatibility work for newer Windows 11 versions, including 24H2. Its FAQ also documents legacy features that Microsoft changed or removed, limiting what a shell patch can restore. Consult the FAQ and current release notes for your exact system.
Where to get the installer
The project identifies its GitHub repository as its official distribution channel. Start at github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher/releases, rather than treating a mirror or repackaged download as equivalent. If you need this historical build, first check whether its original asset is still available from the repository. A third-party listing can help identify the version, but it is not the project’s official download source.
Before running an installer, confirm the repository owner is valinet, choose the correct architecture, read the release notes, and verify that the file is an original project asset. Use any hash or GitHub asset information provided where available. Do not install an old build on a current PC merely because a download page still lists it.

Install or update ExplorerPatcher
The documented installer workflow is to download the appropriate ep_setup.exe, run it, approve the User Account Control prompt, and allow File Explorer to restart. You can open its settings by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing Properties, or by opening Properties (ExplorerPatcher) from Start. Labels can vary with Windows language, build, and ExplorerPatcher revision. The project’s installer guide covers the process.

A higher version number alone is not sufficient reason to update: compare its tested builds and known issues with your winver result.

- Right-click the taskbar, open Properties, choose Uninstall, then select Uninstall ExplorerPatcher.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select ExplorerPatcher, and uninstall it.
- Use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Run
ep_setup.exe /uninstallfrom an elevated command prompt or other appropriate elevated launch. - Alternatively, rename
ep_setup.exetoep_uninstall.exeand run it, as described in the installer guide.
If Explorer crashes or the screen is black
Try recovery steps in order, starting with the least invasive:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Choose Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and run it. - If the taskbar still does not appear, the project FAQ describes a recovery shortcut: hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift, press Enter, and keep holding the keys until the taskbar appears. Then revert the taskbar style or uninstall ExplorerPatcher.
- If ExplorerPatcher Properties opens, restore a default taskbar style or use its uninstall option.
- If the interface is usable but the normal route fails, run
ep_setup.exe /uninstall. - If those steps fail, use Safe Mode, System Restore, or Windows recovery options. Back up important data where possible.
The project’s problem-reporting guidance documents a more advanced recovery procedure involving C:Windowsdxgi.dll. Treat that as an emergency measure, not a routine fix: changing or removing system files can make Windows unstable. Do not attempt it unless you understand the procedure, have administrative access, and have a recovery plan.

The project FAQ says Windows Defender and other security products may flag or remove ExplorerPatcher files. A detection is not, by itself, proof that a file is malware—but it is also not a reason to dismiss an alert or create broad exclusions automatically. Verify that the installer came from the official repository, inspect the release and file details, and consider a restore point or backup before making shell changes. Do not install it on a managed work PC without administrator approval.

The project FAQ provides PowerShell exclusions for users who decide to proceed. These reduce antivirus scanning at the listed paths and therefore carry a security trade-off; they should not be used to make an unverified download run:

Should you use this version in 2026?
Use 22621.2361.58.1 only when you have a specific reason to preserve or troubleshoot a historical 22H2/23H2-era setup, and the tested-build information matches the machine. A virtual machine, system image, or restore point is prudent before changing the shell.
For a newer Windows 11 installation, start with the latest official release notes and install only a version whose compatibility information fits your actual build and architecture. If your priority is maximum stability—especially on a work-managed PC—avoid shell patchers unless they are approved and tested. If you need only a Start menu or selected interface changes, alternatives such as Start11, StartAllBack, or Open-Shell may fit that narrower use case, but they are not feature-for-feature replacements for ExplorerPatcher’s build-specific shell patches.
