Police in Isparta, Türkiye, arrested an exam candidate after alleging that they used a button-style camera, concealed internet hardware, AI software and a hidden earpiece to cheat during the June 8, 2024, TYT university-entrance exam. The reported setup appears to have been a custom arrangement—not a verified commercial “AI cheating device”—and the available evidence does not establish how many questions it answered successfully.
What happened
The incident took place during the Temel Yeterlilik Testi (TYT), the first session of Türkiye’s national Yükseköğretim Kurumları Sınavı (YKS), which determines university admissions. That high-stakes setting is important: this was not simply a student using unauthorized help on a classroom quiz.
Turkish authorities identified the candidate by the initials M.E.E. Reports said police became suspicious during the exam, removed the candidate and searched them. Authorities reportedly found a button-style camera, a concealed connectivity device, a phone disguised as a bank card and an earpiece. Reuters reported that M.E.E. was arrested and jailed pending trial. An alleged helper, identified in Turkish reporting as A.B., was detained and later released after questioning.
Turkish media also reported that some equipment had been hidden inside an altered shoe lining and transferred to the candidate after they entered the venue. Those concealment details come primarily from local reporting and should be treated as attributed accounts.

Reuters reporting described a police demonstration in which an exam question was captured, processed by AI and answered audibly through an earpiece.
How the alleged system worked
At a high level, the reported chain was:
button camera → internet-connectivity device → AI software → phone → earpiece
- The concealed camera reportedly captured an image of a question.
- The image was transmitted through an internet-connected device. English-language coverage called this a “router,” while Turkish reports described it more generally as internet-providing equipment.
- AI software processed the image and generated a response.
- The response was sent to a phone and delivered through a hidden earpiece.
The reporting does not identify the AI provider, model, phone brand, camera model or earpiece model. There is also no reliable evidence that the system was a standardized product sold as an “AI cheating kit.”

Available reports say authorities noticed suspicious behavior during the exam and then searched the candidate. Later Turkish coverage attributed to surveillance footage a sequence in which the candidate entered the building, went to a restroom and was subsequently removed from the exam room.

The sources do not establish that facial recognition, radio-frequency monitoring or an automated AI detector caught the candidate. The reported discovery followed human suspicion and a physical search.
Did it actually answer the exam questions?
Police demonstrated that the reported workflow could capture a question and produce a spoken AI answer. That demonstration is evidence of a working mechanism under demonstration conditions, not proof that it operated continuously or accurately during the real exam.
Turkish reporting attributed a statement to M.E.E. that the system began malfunctioning after roughly an hour and caused panic. That is an account attributed to the candidate, not an independently verified technical diagnosis. The available reporting does not establish how many questions were transmitted, how many answers were correct or whether the system materially improved the candidate’s score.

Why the setup was technically fragile
- Camera alignment: A button camera needed a clear view of small printed text without attracting attention.
- Image quality: Glare, page curvature, poor lighting, diagrams or small type could interfere with image recognition.
- Connectivity: The system depended on a wireless link functioning inside the exam environment.
- Latency: Capturing, transmitting, interpreting, solving and speaking an answer would take time.
- AI reliability: A model could misread a question, calculate incorrectly or fail on nuanced wording.
- Audio concealment: The earpiece had to remain in position and be audible to the candidate without being detected.
- Coordination: An outside helper, if involved, added another potential point of failure.
Those constraints explain why the case should not be treated as proof that AI can reliably solve an entire entrance examination in real time.

Reuters reported that M.E.E. was formally arrested and sent to jail pending trial. Turkish reports said the alleged helper was detained and later released. Anadolu Agency also reported that the candidate would be barred from ÖSYM-administered exams and placements for two years.
Turkish coverage cited Law No. 6114, which includes criminal provisions concerning certain forms of exam cheating and assistance. Some reproduced legal guidance refers to possible prison exposure of one to four years, but statutory exposure is not the same as a sentence.

What this case says about AI and exam security
The significance of the incident is not that a chatbot magically whispered perfect answers. It is that multimodal AI can be inserted into a physical communications chain: a camera captures the paper, a network carries the image, software interprets it and audio returns an answer to the candidate.
That creates a different threat from a student simply typing a question into a chatbot. Exam security now has to consider unauthorized cameras, wireless devices, covert audio, outside coordination and the delay between an image being captured and a response being delivered.
At the same time, the case demonstrates the limitations of such a scheme. It depended on concealment, connectivity, image quality, AI accuracy and low enough latency to be useful. A police demonstration cannot establish sustained success in a real examination, and the incident does not show that all exams are vulnerable in the same way.

- The accuracy of any answers delivered during the actual TYT.
- The final outcome of the criminal proceedings.
The confirmed core of the story is narrower but still significant: in Isparta, during a national university-admission exam, authorities reported finding a concealed camera-and-audio arrangement connected to AI, arrested the candidate and pursued legal and testing-related consequences.
