Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational across 29 participating countries as of April 10, 2026. For most non-EU visitors making short stays, it replaces routine ink entry and exit stamps with an electronic record linked to passport details, a facial image and fingerprints. It does not make travel passport-free or remove border checks: you still present your passport and may need to complete biometric processing.
What “29 countries” means
EES is a European border-management system—not a worldwide agreement among 29 countries. It applies at the external borders of the participating Schengen countries. The rollout began on October 12, 2025, and became fully operational on April 10, 2026. The European Commission describes the system and its rollout.
The participating countries are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Ireland and Cyprus are EU members but are not in this 29-country EES group.
The relevant crossing is into or out of the participating area. A journey between two participating Schengen countries normally does not trigger a new external-border EES registration, although temporary internal border controls and other document checks may still occur.

Who is affected?
EES generally covers non-EU nationals crossing an external border of the participating countries for a short stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. That includes many U.S., U.K., Canadian, Australian and New Zealand visitors, whether they travel visa-free or hold a short-stay Schengen visa. It can apply to tourism, business and family visits.

“Non-EU” does not mean every person with a non-EU passport follows an identical process. If you have a residence permit, long-stay visa, special status or unusual itinerary, check the relevant destination’s official border information.

What happens at the border
On a first relevant crossing, authorities may create an electronic record containing your name and travel-document details, a facial image, fingerprints, and the date and place of entry or exit. A refusal of entry can also be recorded. At many airports, the process may begin at a self-service kiosk or biometric station, followed by an officer’s check. The sequence varies by location and traveler.

- Join the correct queue. Follow signs for non-EU or “third-country national” processing and local instructions.
- Present your passport. EES does not replace the passport or the identity check.
- Complete biometric steps if directed. This may include a facial image and fingerprints, particularly for an initial registration.
- Speak to an officer if asked. Self-service equipment does not eliminate human border control or manual processing.
- Keep using the same passport for the trip. The passport connects you to the electronic record and is needed at departure and future crossings.
At later crossings, authorities can use the existing record to check your identity and log the crossing. Repeat travelers may not need the same initial enrollment again, but they still present a passport and may be asked for biometrics or directed to manual processing. A previous registration does not guarantee a quicker queue.

For some routes, checks occur before departure from the non-Schengen side. This includes certain U.K.-to-Schengen crossings at Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone and Eurostar at St Pancras. EES is not just an airport procedure: ports, rail routes and road crossings can also be involved. Check your carrier and the specific crossing for where to queue and when to arrive.

EES does not require you to apply online before your trip, and ETIAS does not replace EES. A visa-exempt traveler may eventually need ETIAS authorization before departure and still go through EES at the border. The European Commission’s EES information says ETIAS is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2026; check the official Commission page for current timing and requirements before travel.

Why Europe is replacing routine stamps
With EES, border authorities can record entries and exits electronically rather than relying mainly on officers and travelers interpreting a series of ink stamps. The Commission says the system is intended to help manage external borders, identify overstays, reduce identity and document fraud, and support more automated checks. Its records can help calculate time spent in the area under the short-stay 90-days-in-any-180-days rule.
That makes personal record-keeping more—not less—important. Keep track of your Schengen-area days and prior trips; do not rely on a stamp, or the absence of one, as your main way to establish how much time you have left. EES does not remove the stay limit, visa rules or the possibility of refusal.

Digital records do not guarantee shorter queues
Automation may make some repeat checks more efficient, but a digital system still depends on functioning equipment, network access, staffing and manageable passenger volumes. Reported post-rollout problems have included long queues, disrupted operations and missed flights. The Guardian reported waits of up to five hours at some busy periods and a seven-hour disruption at Lisbon airport; these are reported incidents, not a forecast for every airport or crossing. Its account of EES delays also describes operational pressure at different types of border point.
Allow extra time, especially if you are likely to be registering for the first time or traveling at a busy period. There is no reliable universal buffer: the right allowance depends on the crossing, traffic, staffing and whether checks take place before departure. Avoid tight onward connections immediately after an external-border check where possible. If a kiosk cannot read your passport or capture a biometric, ask border staff for help rather than repeatedly retrying or leaving the queue.
How to prepare
- Confirm whether your nationality and immigration status fall within EES and whether you need a Schengen visa.
- Check passport validity against the destination’s entry rules. Bring the passport you will use throughout the trip.
- Keep your dates and prior Schengen stays available so you can track the 90/180-day limit independently.
- Check instructions from the specific airport, port, rail operator or carrier, particularly if the check happens before you leave the non-Schengen country.
- Allow a flexible connection and extra border time; do not assume that a past crossing or biometric registration guarantees a fast return.
- Follow officers’ instructions if a biometric capture fails or you are sent to manual processing.
What about privacy and biometric data?
EES handles sensitive personal information. The Commission says the system records identity and passport information, facial images, fingerprints, border-crossing dates and places, and refusals of entry, subject to data-protection requirements. These records are used for border and stay checks, including identifying possible overstays.

If you believe a record is wrong or have a question about your data, use the official EES and national-authority guidance for the country handling your crossing. A failed biometric capture does not mean you should abandon processing: ask border staff what to do next.
A useful comparison—and its limits
Passport-stamp replacement is not unprecedented. Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority says it stopped inked arrival endorsement stamps for foreign visitors in March 2022 and instead issues an electronic pass by email. That is a different national system, with different rules and procedures; it should not be taken as a guide to EES eligibility or biometric processing. Singapore ICA explains the change.
