Essential did promise a better camera for its next-generation phone, commonly called the PH-2, but the promise was never tested in the consumer market. In April 2018, Essential industrial-design chief Linda Jiang acknowledged that the PH-1 camera had been a major weakness and said the company would “do it better” on the next generation. A real PH-2 prototype later reached engineering-validation testing, yet Essential canceled it and shut down in February 2020. No production PH-2 camera exists to review.
What Essential actually promised
Jiang made the commitment in a Business Insider interview reported by MobileSyrup in April 2018. Essential had heard the criticism of the PH-1 camera, she said, and intended to improve the experience on its second-generation phone.
That was a broad promise about camera quality and reliability—not a specification sheet. Essential did not announce a sensor resolution, manufacturer, aperture, optical image stabilization, telephoto or ultra-wide camera, computational-photography system, release date, or final product name. “PH-2” was the name widely used by contemporary reports, not a formally launched retail product.
Why the PH-1 camera drew criticism
The PH-1 launched in 2017 with ambitious hardware: two rear 13-megapixel cameras, one color and one monochrome, intended to combine data computationally for better detail and low-light images. Its other headline specifications included a 5.71-inch 2560×1312 display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Ars Technica documented the unusual dual-camera design, while WIRED’s review found that the specifications did not translate into a dependable camera.

- Camera startup and capture could be slow.
- Processing sometimes took too long, especially when combining the two sensors.
- The app could crash or freeze, and photographs occasionally failed to save.
- Indoor and low-light images were often weak or inconsistent.
- Image quality varied considerably compared with leading 2017 flagships.
Hands-on coverage generally viewed outdoor photographs more favorably than indoor or low-light shots, so the PH-1 was not unusable in every situation. The central problem was the gap between capable-sounding hardware and an unreliable out-of-box experience. TechCrunch’s launch assessment described that uneven performance.
Essential improved the PH-1 through software
Essential did not ignore the complaints. A series of camera-app and system updates improved stability, loading time, capture speed, image processing and low-light performance. By late 2017, TechCrunch reported meaningful gains, including more effective sensor fusion.

Andy Rubin argued that the most serious issues were software-related, particularly the processing used to combine the monochrome and color sensors. His position is recorded in an Essential Reddit AMA reported by Phandroid. That explanation and the independent reviews are compatible: software updates made the PH-1 faster and more usable, while reviewers could still reasonably find its image quality behind the best competing phones.

A real PH-2 prototype existed
The PH-2 was more than a rumor. Former Essential lead designer Kevin Hoffman later published images and background information about the canceled device. Coverage by 9to5Google says the phone reached its second round of engineering-validation testing—a development stage well beyond a concept render.
Reported PH-2 design details
- Two rear cameras, retaining a design relationship with the PH-1.
- Magnetic accessory pins.
- A rear fingerprint sensor.
- A display notch similar to the original phone.
- More rounded sides, a matte rear surface and 2.5D front glass.
- Planned IP68 dust and water resistance.
Engadget’s report and Wccftech’s coverage provide additional context. The triple-camera arrangement sometimes associated with Essential belonged to the separate PH-3 concept, not the PH-2 prototype.

Did the prototype prove the camera was better?
No. Public prototype coverage confirms a dual-camera layout, but it does not provide sensor resolution, sensor size, aperture, stabilization details, image-processing hardware, camera-app performance, or sample-based quality testing. There is no reliable hands-on review of a production PH-2.
That leaves three different levels of evidence:
- Company acknowledgment: Essential publicly admitted that the PH-1 camera was a major pain point and promised improvement.
- Observed remediation: PH-1 updates improved speed, stability, processing and some low-light behavior.
- Prototype evidence: A PH-2 engineering device existed, but its camera performance was never validated publicly.
A patent involving an under-display camera was not proof that the PH-2 would use that technology; patent reporting was speculation rather than a product confirmation. Notebookcheck’s report illustrates that distinction.

Why the PH-2 never reached buyers
According to Hoffman’s account as reported by 9to5Google, Andy Rubin canceled the PH-2 during the second engineering-validation round and redirected attention toward the Essential Home product line. Essential Home itself never reached consumers.
The company subsequently pursued Project GEM, a radically different smartphone concept. Essential announced in February 2020 that it was winding down operations, ending the possibility of a conventional PH-2 release. The cancellation explanation comes primarily from a former designer’s account, not a detailed official postmortem, and no source identifies camera performance as the reason for cancellation.

Final verdict
Essential’s camera promise was genuine but qualitative: the company intended its successor to deliver a more reliable, better-performing camera than the PH-1. Software updates made the original phone less frustrating, and a real PH-2 prototype reached serious engineering work. However, the device was canceled before release, so the promised improvement was never delivered as a consumer product. Any claim that the PH-2 had a specific sensor, stabilization system or demonstrably superior image quality goes beyond the available evidence.
