The Essae-Teraoka PR-85 is an 80-mm thermal POS receipt printer for retail counters, restaurants and billing desks—not a general-purpose printer or a dependable choice for adhesive labels. Listings describe automatic cutting and wired connections, but published specifications conflict, and Essae’s current catalog highlights the PR-55 and PR-65 rather than the PR-85. Treat the PR-85 as an older or possibly region-specific model until Essae or an authorized local dealer confirms its availability, configuration and support.

These are reseller-reported specifications, not a current PR-85 manufacturer datasheet. A detailed listing can be useful as a starting point, but treat its figures as claims to confirm. For example, TechJockey’s PR-85 listing gives information that conflicts with other published descriptions. Its page also includes computer-terminal specifications that should not be mistaken for standalone-printer features.
What the PR-85 is—and is not
The PR-85 is described as a thermal billing or receipt printer for transaction workflows such as retail sales, restaurant orders and kitchen or bar tickets (often called KOT/BOT). It prints monochrome output on heat-sensitive roll paper; it does not need an ink cartridge or ribbon for ordinary thermal printing.

Although some marketplaces place it in a thermal-label category, the reported use cases center on receipts, bills and order slips. Do not buy it for adhesive shipping or product labels without confirming that the specific unit supports the media, sensing and command features your labels require. A purpose-built label printer normally offers label-gap or black-mark sensing and media calibration.
Paper described as “80 mm” refers to its width, not the roll’s diameter. Confirm maximum roll diameter and core size before ordering paper. Thermal receipts can fade through exposure to heat, sunlight, plasticizers and abrasion, so keep important transaction records digitally or in another durable form rather than relying on receipts as archives.
Speed, ports and power: details to check
Speed
Published PR-85 speed figures range from 220 to 260 mm/s. Treat 260 mm/s as a reseller-reported maximum, not a guaranteed speed for every unit or every receipt. Actual throughput depends on the print content, interface, software and configuration.

USB, Ethernet and serial are commonly reported; parallel is mentioned in some descriptions. That does not mean every PR-85 has all four ports. Before buying, ask for a clear rear-panel photograph, the exact model or suffix, and written confirmation of the interface supplied. Choose based on what your POS system supports: a USB connection does not establish that its software has a compatible printer driver, and an Ethernet port does not by itself guarantee support for your application.
Power and cutter
Listings most often describe a 24 V DC, 2.5 A adapter, although another specification gives 2 A. Use the rating and polarity printed on the actual printer and its approved adapter, not a generic replacement chosen only because it is rated at 24 V. The printer is described as mains-adapter powered; Bluetooth or battery operation is not established for the standard model.
An automatic cutter is reported, but confirm whether a particular unit supports full cut, partial cut or both. The cutter can fail separately from the print head. If it jams, stop sending jobs and do not yank paper through the mechanism; follow the service procedure for that unit or contact a technician. A reliable cutter-life figure was not established.

Drivers and POS compatibility
Older reseller material mentions Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and OPOS. It does not establish current PR-85 driver availability or native compatibility with Windows 11, macOS, Android, iOS or Linux. Start with Essae’s support portal, where users can select a machine, model and category to look for downloads. If the PR-85 is not listed, ask Essae or a local authorized dealer for the correct package for the unit’s revision and interface.

Compatibility depends on more than whether the computer detects the printer. A POS application may use one of several methods:
- Operating-system driver: The printer appears as a normal printer queue, and the application prints through that queue.
- Raw ESC/POS: The POS software sends receipt commands directly. The printer must support the command behavior the software expects.
- OPOS: A Windows POS application communicates through a configured OPOS logical device. Installing a driver alone may not create or configure that device.
- Network printing: The application sends output to an IP address or print server. Confirm that both the printer and POS software support the chosen method.
Before buying, check the POS vendor’s supported-printer list and confirm the required mode, interface, cutter commands, barcode handling and cash-drawer output if applicable. Listings that mention Windows 10 or OPOS are not proof that a particular POS application will work.
Bluetooth and battery claims are especially uncertain: one user review mentions tablet pairing and battery use, but that conflicts with the commonly reported wired interfaces and 24-V adapter. Do not count on either feature unless the exact unit has the required hardware and the seller demonstrates it.
Basic setup for a wired unit
The exact button combinations, menus and self-test procedure can vary, and a model-specific manual was not established here. Use the unit’s manual or service instructions for those steps. For a typical setup:

- Confirm the label identifies an Essae PR-85, not the TTC FIREBERD-related printer.
- Inspect the rear panel and connect the matching USB, serial or Ethernet cable.
- Use the adapter specified on the unit’s label or an Essae-approved replacement.
- Load compatible thermal paper with its heat-sensitive side facing the print head, then close the cover fully.
- Install the correct driver or configure the POS application for the supported raw/ESC/POS, OPOS or network method.
- Print a local test or the documented printer self-test. If using Ethernet, identify and configure the printer’s IP address using the unit’s supported procedure; if using serial, match the communication settings at both ends.
- Test an actual receipt with text, totals, any required logo or barcode, and a cut command. Configure cash-drawer output only if the printer, drawer and POS application support it.
Troubleshooting common problems
The printer powers on but produces no receipt
- Check that the roll is thermal paper, loaded in the correct direction, and not obstructed by the cover or sensor.
- Confirm that the POS application is sending to the correct queue, OPOS device or network address.
- Check that the selected driver and print method match the interface and the application’s requirements.
- For USB, try a direct computer port rather than a hub. For Ethernet, check link lights and confirm the configured IP address is reachable. For serial, make sure both devices use matching communication settings.
- If a documented local self-test works but the POS receipt does not, investigate the application, driver or connection configuration before assuming the print mechanism has failed.
Print is faint, patchy or uneven
Check for reversed or poor-quality paper, dirt on the print head, moisture or contamination, and an unsuitable print-density setting. A worn head or unstable power supply is also possible. Clean only as directed by the manufacturer; do not scrape the head or use abrasive material.

The cutter jams or does not cut
Stop sending jobs and follow the unit’s service instructions. Do not pull hard on paper trapped in the cutter. Clear only loose fragments you can safely reach; recurring jams or a failed cutter need mechanical service. A functioning print head does not prove that the cutter is sound.
Is it still available?
Essae’s current peripherals catalog prominently lists the PR-55 and PR-65, not the PR-85. That makes an older, region-specific or no-longer-promoted status plausible, but it does not prove formal discontinuation. Third-party listings or historic price references do not confirm current stock, warranty, an official price or spare-parts availability.
For a new purchase, contact Essae through its official enquiry page or an authorized local dealer. Ask whether the exact model is supported in your region, whether drivers and replacement parts are available, and what warranty applies. Do not assume a marketplace listing represents current manufacturer availability.
Buying a used or surplus PR-85
A low price is only useful if the printer can be connected, serviced and operated by your POS system. Consider the PR-85 when you already have a compatible deployment, its ports match your installation, local service and parts are available, and the seller can demonstrate a working test. Reconsider it if you require current manufacturer support, verified newer-OS or mobile compatibility, Bluetooth, battery operation, a current warranty or label handling.
Before paying, request photographs of the front and rear, model and serial labels, adapter label, paper compartment, print head and platen, cutter opening, and fitted ports. Then test:
- Cold start, cover-open and paper detection.
- Continuous printing and even darkness across the full width.
- Receipt alignment and cutter operation.
- Connection through the exact port you will use, including network reachability if applicable.
- Barcode or other output your POS workflow requires.
- Cash-drawer output only if you need it and have confirmed support.
Get the exact interface, adapter, included cables, warranty and service contact in writing. Ask whether compatible print heads, cutters and power adapters can still be sourced before treating a used unit as a long-term installation.

Current Essae alternatives
Essae’s currently listed PR-55 and PR-65 are more straightforward starting points if you want a model featured in the current official catalog. Check the latest product documentation and regional availability before ordering.

Essae lists Windows, ESC/POS, OPOS, JPOS, CUPS, Virtual COM USB and mobile SDK support for these current models; verify the specific functions and operating-system versions on its official catalog and in the relevant model brochure. The PR-65 is not automatically a drop-in PR-85 replacement: confirm driver mode, port, command behavior, cash-drawer needs and POS-software support. Essae also lists integrated POS systems, including POS-915, POS-916 and POS-956 families; these are complete-terminal options, not standalone printer replacements. Bottom line
The Essae PR-85 is best approached as an older 80-mm wired receipt printer with useful reported POS features, but uncertain current support and inconsistent published specifications. Verify the exact unit, interface, power adapter, driver path, cutter, parts and warranty before buying. If you need a newly catalogued Essae printer, compare the PR-55 and PR-65 against your POS requirements rather than assuming any 80-mm model is interchangeable.
