A camera for the Moon has to do more than take sharp pictures: astronauts must be able to use it through spacesuit gloves, while it withstands dust, vacuum, radiation and extreme temperature swings. ESA has been evaluating NASA’s Handheld Universal Lunar Camera (HULC) during PANGAEA geology training in Lanzarote, Spain. The system is based on a modified Nikon Z 9, but its exact Artemis flight assignment is not yet established by the current mission plan.

What ESA tested in Lanzarote

ESA tested HULC during PANGAEA, its astronaut geology-training programme. Lanzarote’s volcanic terrain gives crews a place to practise lunar-style field science: locating geological features, documenting samples and recording the relationship between a target and its wider surroundings. The work was an operational evaluation, not a lunar qualification test.

During the exercises, astronauts and instructors considered how well the camera could handle bright conditions, strong shadows, low light and volcanic caves. They also assessed lenses, flash settings, the viewfinder or eyepiece, and whether the controls could be operated with bulky gloves. ESA reported interest in telephoto options such as 70–200 mm, but that should not be read as a confirmed final flight lens package. The PANGAEA reports describe different training events and participants, including ESA, NASA and JAXA astronauts.

The point is to test the whole workflow: an astronaut moving over uneven ground, framing a close-up sample or a broad landscape, and making useful images without wasting time on controls that are hard to reach or interpret. ESA’s account of the camera trials discusses the geological and operational needs behind that evaluation.

What is the Handheld Universal Lunar Camera?

HULC is NASA’s Handheld Universal Lunar Camera. Its commercial starting point is Nikon’s Z 9, but the proposed lunar system is not simply a stock camera carried into space. NASA and Nikon announced a Space Act Agreement on February 29, 2024, to develop the camera for lunar use. The arrangement involves adapting the camera and its interfaces for astronauts, rather than treating ordinary professional-camera specifications as sufficient.

NASA describes a custom grip and rearranged buttons intended for operation in pressurized gloves, a NASA-developed thermal blanket intended to protect against temperature extremes and dust, and modified electrical components intended to reduce radiation-related problems. The system is designed for still photography and video, with a viewfinder and Nikkor lenses among the features under development and evaluation. NASA’s development announcement does not provide a complete final flight specification.

That distinction matters. Public information does not establish the final weight, battery capacity, storage, lens selection, radiation tolerance or certified operating limits. Nor does it show that the flight configuration has completed every qualification step.

Why a lunar camera needs more than ruggedization

The lunar surface combines conditions that rarely coincide in ordinary photography. ESA cites environmental extremes of roughly −200°C to +120°C, depending on location, illumination and operating conditions. Those figures frame the engineering challenge; they are not one uniform temperature that every camera will experience. A protective thermal blanket is intended to help manage exposure, but it does not mean the camera is impervious to every condition.

Vacuum changes how materials and components behave. NASA says the system has been subject to thermal, vacuum and radiation testing. Electrical modifications are intended to reduce radiation-related risk, not make the camera radiation-proof. Lunar dust presents another problem: it is abrasive and can contaminate controls, seals, optical surfaces and interfaces. Testing in volcanic terrain can help crews practise handling and documentation, but it cannot reproduce lunar dust or vacuum.

Lighting is equally demanding. Near the lunar South Pole, sunlit ground can sit beside deep shadow, including permanently shadowed regions. Bright regolith can produce severe highlights while nearby details disappear into darkness. That makes exposure, focus and framing difficult for both landscapes and close-up geology. A camera must help astronauts record useful detail without assuming that consumer-style automatic settings will always interpret the scene correctly.

Ergonomics are part of the engineering, not a cosmetic adjustment. Thick gloves make small buttons, dials and touchscreens harder to use. A viewfinder may help with framing in bright sunlight, but it still has to work with a helmet and limited head movement. A longer lens may help document a distant feature, yet be harder to handle or steady in a suit. Protective layers can also add bulk or complicate access. These trade-offs are why field training evaluates the astronaut-camera interaction as well as image quality.

Field trials, analog moonwalks and laboratory tests

ESA’s Lanzarote work is one part of a broader development effort. NASA has also used early camera designs during Arizona analog missions run by the Joint EVA and Human Surface Mobility Test Team, including JETT exercises. Those simulations let crews practise moonwalk-like tasks and geological documentation in desert terrain. They help reveal workflow and usability issues, but they do not reproduce lunar gravity or qualify hardware for the full space environment.

Laboratory thermal, vacuum and radiation tests address different risks than field exercises. Together, these activities can inform design changes and operating procedures; none should be mistaken for proof that every aspect of a final lunar camera configuration has been certified. ESA’s earlier report on European testing described further testing plans, including an intended ISS evaluation. That report alone does not confirm that the flight to the station took place.

Why the images matter to lunar science

HULC is intended to support scientific documentation as well as mission records. Useful images may include fine rock textures, sample locations, geological layers, broad terrain context and the boundaries between illuminated and shadowed ground. This context helps scientists interpret what a crew collected and where it came from. At the lunar South Pole, documenting shadowed terrain is also relevant to exploration of regions associated with water-ice investigations.

Video can preserve movement and provide a record of surface activity that still photographs cannot. It may also support situational awareness for ground teams, but the cited sources do not establish that every video will be transmitted live or continuously. High-resolution stills and video also bring practical demands for storage, power and downlink prioritization; public information supplied for HULC does not specify those capacities.

Which Artemis mission will carry HULC?

Older NASA and ESA material connected the camera’s intended use with Artemis III. NASA’s current Artemis III description, however, identifies that mission as a 2027 crewed demonstration in low Earth orbit, rather than a lunar surface landing. NASA’s current Artemis architecture identifies Artemis IV as the start of lunar-landing operations, with a target of early 2028.

Accordingly, it is more accurate to describe HULC as a camera being developed for future Artemis lunar operations than to say it will definitely be used on an Artemis III Moon landing. The mission plan and the camera’s exact operational flight assignment can change; the cited current NASA material does not confirm a specific HULC flight assignment.
