Error 224003 is JW Player’s MEDIA_ERR_SRC_NOT_SUPPORTED condition: the browser cannot play the associated media resource. The cause may be an unsupported video or audio format, an outdated or incompatible browser, an extension or session conflict, or a media URL that is inaccessible because of permissions, HTTP errors, or CORS configuration.
Work through the browser and session checks first. If the same media fails in every current browser, the publisher or host usually needs to repair the file or its delivery settings.
What error code 224003 means
JW Player defines 224003 as “Failed to play the associated resource because it is not supported by this browser.” The player commonly displays “This video file cannot be played.” “Not supported” is broader than a codec problem: it can also describe a resource the browser cannot fetch or use correctly.

There is no authoritative prevalence percentage or average repair time for this code, so a precise diagnosis requires testing the browser, session, request, and media file separately.

Fix 224003 as a viewer
1. Update your browser and operating system
Install pending browser and operating-system updates, then reload the page. Test the video in a current release of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. JW.org’s official support guidance lists these modern browsers and recommends updating when playback fails; that is a general compatibility check, not a guarantee that every publisher’s stream supports every browser.
2. Try a private or clean browser session
- Open a private window (Incognito in Chrome, InPrivate in Edge, or Private Browsing in Firefox and Safari).
- Visit the video page, sign in if the site requires it, and press Play.
- If playback works, return to the normal window and disable extensions for that site one at a time.
Ad blockers, privacy tools, download helpers, and other playback-related add-ons can alter requests or scripts. A clean session also avoids corrupted or stale site data.

3. Close other playback tabs
Close duplicate tabs and other pages currently playing video, then try again. Some implementations document simultaneous videos as a possible interference. Treat this as a diagnostic for a particular site rather than a universal JW Player requirement.

4. Check whether the failure is local or site-wide
Try the same page in another current browser on the same device. If possible, test a second device or network. A video that works elsewhere points toward a local browser, extension, or session issue. A video that fails consistently points toward the publisher, the media host, or an unsupported file.

Diagnose the request in developer tools
This section is for site owners and technically minded readers.
- Open the browser’s developer tools (usually F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux; Option+Command+I on macOS).
- Select the Network panel, reload the page, and press Play.
- Filter for the media file, an
.mp4URL, or a streaming manifest such as.m3u8or SMIL. - Inspect the request status, response headers, console messages, and the exact URL requested.

JW Player’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for verifying that the media URL exists and distinguishing missing files from denied requests. A successful HTTP status alone does not prove that the browser can decode the media.

Test the media file without JW Player
Use a minimal HTML5 test page to separate player configuration from the asset itself:

</video>Replace the example URL with the exact media URL and open the page in a current browser. If the file fails there too, investigate its encoding, access policy, and response headers. If it works in the test page but not in JW Player, inspect the player configuration, manifest, token, or event-handling code.

Repair an unsupported file or stream
Re-encode to a broadly compatible target
When the file is valid but uses a format the target browser does not support, re-encode it as an MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio. JW Player identifies that combination as its widest-supported target. Preserve the original while testing the new encode, and verify the result in the basic <video> page before replacing the production asset.
Validate delivery, not only the codec
- Confirm the production URL resolves to the intended file or manifest.
- Return an appropriate media content type and support byte-range requests where the delivery setup requires them.
- Ensure authentication or signed URLs remain valid for the full playback request.
- Configure CORS when the player page and media resource use different origins.
- Check that every referenced segment in an HLS or SMIL presentation is reachable, not just the manifest.
Browser-side versus publisher-side fault

What to send when reporting the problem
Give the site operator enough detail to reproduce the failure:
- Page URL and, if visible, the media URL.
- Browser name and exact version.
- Operating-system version.
- Whether private browsing or another browser worked.
- Whether extensions were disabled.
- The Network status (such as 403 or 404) and any console or CORS message.
- The time of the failed attempt and whether other videos on the same site play.
Do not assume that clearing cache, buying new hardware, or repeatedly refreshing will repair a denied request, broken CORS policy, or incompatible encode. Those issues require a change by the publisher or media host.
