An Epson printer marked Offline is not necessarily broken: the status can reflect a stuck print queue, a changed Wi-Fi connection, an incorrect printer entry, or a driver issue. Start by printing a test page from the printer itself, then work through the seven fixes below from least disruptive to most involved.
What “Epson printer offline” means
Offline is a communication status, not a definitive hardware diagnosis. The printer may be powered off or asleep, but Windows or macOS can also show it Offline when the queue is stuck, the printer is paused, the computer is using an obsolete printer entry, or the printer and computer can no longer reach each other over the network.
Common triggers include a changed router name or password, a guest Wi-Fi network, VPN or firewall rules, a changed printer IP address, a faulty USB connection, or missing or incompatible Epson software. Epson’s user guide also identifies queue, port, driver, USB, and network configuration issues as possible causes.
First, test the printer without the computer
Use the printer’s control panel to print its built-in nozzle check, product check, or test page. The exact name and button sequence vary by model; consult the printer’s screen or model manual if needed. Epson’s Mac troubleshooting guidance and Windows troubleshooting guidance both use a printer-side check to help separate a printer problem from a computer connection problem.

- The page prints: The printer can perform a basic print job. Focus next on the queue, network, selected printer, or software.
- The page does not print: Read the printer’s screen or indicator lights and resolve any paper, ink, cover, cartridge, or maintenance error before changing computer settings.
- It prints over USB but not Wi-Fi: The printer can print through a direct connection, so investigate wireless setup and network discovery.
Fix 1: Power-cycle the printer and computer
- Turn off the Epson printer and unplug its power cable.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect the cable, and turn the printer on.
- Wait for it to finish starting up and, for a wireless model, reconnecting to Wi-Fi.
- Restart the computer and try printing again.
Microsoft recommends unplugging a printer for 30 seconds before reconnecting it; its Windows troubleshooting steps also include power cycling. If other devices on the network cannot reach the printer either, restart the router as a separate network check. Do not reset the printer’s network settings at this stage: a network reset can erase saved Wi-Fi details.
Fix 2: Confirm the printer and computer are on the same network
On the printer, check Wi-Fi status from its control panel or print a network-status sheet. Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled, the printer reports a connection, and the network name matches the one used by the computer. On Windows or Mac, check the connected Wi-Fi name as well.
A printer connected to a guest network may be isolated from a computer on the main network. The same problem can follow a router replacement, a changed Wi-Fi name or password, or a VPN or mesh-network configuration that blocks communication between devices. Epson says wireless printing requires the printer and computer to be on the same network; see its network and AirPrint documentation.

If the network name or password changed, reconnect the printer using its control panel or the setup software for the exact model. Epson’s official support site provides model-specific setup instructions and downloads. Avoid resetting the network if the printer already prints from another device or if you do not have the Wi-Fi password.
Fix 3: Clear pending jobs and unpause the queue
A stalled job can prevent later documents from printing. Cancel pending jobs and check that the printer is not paused or set to work offline.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer and choose Open print queue.
- Cancel pending documents. If the queue menu offers pause or offline controls, make sure neither state is active.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer and open its queue.
- Cancel pending jobs. In the classic printer menu, clear Pause Printing or Use Printer Offline if either is selected.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners. Older macOS versions may label this area Print & Scan, Print & Fax, or Printers & Scanners.
- Select the Epson printer and open its queue.
- Cancel or delete pending jobs and make sure the queue is not paused.
Microsoft recommends cancelling jobs in the Windows queue, and Epson’s Mac guidance likewise includes deleting pending jobs. If the queue is empty but the printer still shows Offline, continue to the next fix.

Fix 4: Choose the right printer entry and connection
Set the Epson as the Windows default
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer and choose Set as default.
- If Windows is managing the default automatically, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer before selecting the Epson device.
Look for duplicate entries such as a copy, an Offline version, or separate USB and wireless queues. Select the entry that matches the connection you intend to use. Remove obsolete duplicates only after confirming which queue is active.
Check the Windows network port
A network printer queue can point to a stale WSD or IP port, particularly after the printer’s address changes. Epson’s user guide explains that the selected Windows port must match the printer connection. If you are unsure which port is correct, remove and re-add the printer rather than changing port settings at random.
Choose a connection method when adding on Mac
For a supported network printer, Bonjour or AirPrint is usually the simplest choice. Add by IP address when discovery fails and you know the printer’s current address. A model-specific Epson driver may be needed for Epson-specific options. AirPrint works only with compatible printers and may not expose every Epson feature; Epson describes the distinction in its AirPrint documentation and Mac printer-driver guide.
Fix 5: Restart the Windows Print Spooler
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler in the Services window.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Try printing again.
Microsoft recommends restarting the Print Spooler when Windows has a stuck queue or reports a printer Offline. In Windows 11, you can also run the printer troubleshooter from the Get Help app. If the spooler repeatedly stops, cancel visible jobs and remove and re-add the printer before considering more invasive system changes.
Fix 6: Remove and add the printer again
Re-adding creates a fresh printer queue and can clear a stale connection or duplicate configuration.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer, choose Remove, and confirm.
- Make sure the printer is on and connected, return to Printers & scanners, and choose Add device.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Epson printer and choose Remove device.
- Choose Add a printer or scanner and follow the prompts.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners. On older versions, use the equivalent Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax pane in System Preferences.
- Select the Epson printer and remove it.
- Choose Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, select the discovered Epson printer, choose the appropriate AirPrint, Bonjour, or model-specific driver option, and add it.
Try a test page after re-adding. If automatic discovery fails, check the same-network connection, temporarily test without a VPN, and review firewall or network-security settings. Epson’s ET-3700 wireless guidance includes firewall disabling as a temporary setup diagnostic; if you use that test, turn the firewall back on afterward.

Fix 7: Install Epson software or reset the network only if needed
Install software for the exact model
Find the printer by model number on Epson’s official support site, then select the operating system installed on the computer. Package contents vary by model and operating system; a package may include the printer driver, scanner software, or connection utilities. For example, Epson’s ET-4800 support page describes a combined package with printer and scanner components and other utilities. Do not assume that package applies to another model. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
Some Epson installations include Printer Connection Checker, which can inspect connection status and guide repairs; availability depends on the model and installed software. Epson documents the utility in its user guide.
Reset the printer’s network settings only when the connection is wrong or missing
Consider a network reset if the router or Wi-Fi credentials changed, the printer is connected to the wrong network, or the printer remains undiscoverable after the queue has been re-added. Use the model’s instructions, then connect it to Wi-Fi, remove the old computer queue, add the printer again, and print a test page. A reset is unnecessary when the printer already prints from another device, the issue is a stuck queue, or the printer uses USB.

Connect the printer directly to the computer, not through a USB hub. If printing succeeds over USB but not Wi-Fi, focus on wireless configuration. If it fails, try another USB port and cable. Epson advises direct connection and checking the cable and port in its connection troubleshooting guide.

When to contact Epson or suspect hardware
Escalate to Epson support for the exact model if it cannot print its own test page after displayed errors are resolved, shows a persistent hardware error, repeatedly loses power, or remains unreachable from every computer and mobile device after network setup and official software installation. A failure across both USB and Wi-Fi is more concerning than an Offline status in one computer’s queue. For Windows 10 users, Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025; printer compatibility still depends on the Epson model and available software. On Windows on ARM, Microsoft notes that some manufacturer installers may not work as expected and recommends the built-in printer-add procedure when appropriate.
