“Preparing” can mean the Epic Games Launcher is stuck opening, a game install or update is stalled, or Epic Online Services failed to install. The right fix depends on which stage is stuck. First note the exact message or error code, check Epic’s service status, then try the least disruptive steps: fully restart the launcher, check the destination folder and drive, clear only the launcher’s web cache, and verify a game if just one is affected. Reinstalling the launcher should be a last resort.
First, identify which “Preparing” problem you have
“Preparing” is a description of a stuck stage, not one universal Epic Games Launcher error. Match what you see to the likely cause before changing files or reinstalling:

If the problem began suddenly and several games now fail with the same code, check for an Epic service incident before making system-wide changes. A community report about an error code is not confirmation of an official outage.

Visit Epic Games Public Status and look for incidents affecting the Store, launcher, authentication, downloads or content delivery, or Epic Online Services. If the relevant service is degraded, wait for Epic to resolve it rather than repeatedly clearing files or reinstalling. When the status page is operational and only one computer is affected, continue with local checks. Epic also recommends checking service status when the launcher cannot download or launch titles (Epic’s launcher troubleshooting guide).

Restart the launcher completely, then update it
Closing the launcher window may leave its background processes running. Exit it fully before clearing cache or trying another installation.
Windows
- Close the launcher window.
- Open the system-tray overflow area by the clock, right-click the Epic Games icon, and choose Exit.
- If it is still stuck, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. End Epic Games Launcher processes only if they remain running.
- Restart the launcher. If Windows itself has been running for a long time or an update is pending, restart the PC as well.
macOS
Choose Epic Games Launcher > Quit Epic Games Launcher from the menu bar, or press Command + Q. If it will not quit, press Option + Command + Esc, select the launcher, and force-quit it. Relaunch it normally.
If the launcher opens, check for an update: click your profile icon in the upper-right, open Settings, and select Restart and Update if that option appears. If the launcher cannot open, use only the installer from Epic’s official site; avoid third-party updater utilities and unofficial DLL downloads.

Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and select Run as administrator, then retry the install or update. Epic recommends this as a troubleshooting step, and it can help when the launcher cannot write to a folder. It is a test, not a guaranteed fix. If it works only with elevation, investigate the folder’s ownership and permissions rather than making elevated launch the permanent workaround for every game.

Check the installation folder, drive, and free space
When “Preparing” appears after you choose a game installation location, the launcher may be unable to create or access the target folder. Epic’s DP-06 installation-timeout guidance specifically recommends checking read/write access, trying administrator mode, and testing another drive.
Check folder access in Windows
- Open File Explorer and locate the folder you selected for Epic games.
- Right-click it and select Properties > Security.
- Select your current Windows username and confirm that Read and Write are allowed.
- If a needed permission is denied, use Edit to adjust the permissions for your account, then retry. If the computer or folder is managed by an organization, ask its administrator instead of changing managed permissions.
Also check that the drive is connected, has not changed its drive letter, and is not full. A removable drive may disconnect, while a network location may be unavailable. A folder synced to cloud storage or subject to Windows security controls can also behave differently from an ordinary local folder.
Confirm that there is enough free space for the game and temporary installation or update work. The listed download size is not necessarily the full space needed while files are being unpacked or patched, and there is no single extra-space figure that fits every game. If several programs also report disk or access errors, investigate the drive or Windows rather than assuming the launcher is the cause.
Try another local folder or drive
If the same install repeatedly stalls, choose a simple folder on a healthy local drive with adequate free space. This can isolate a permissions, path, or drive problem, but it is not a guaranteed repair. Trying a different destination may be impractical for a large game; use it as a diagnostic test if possible.

Clear only the launcher’s web cache
A damaged web cache can interfere with the launcher interface. Clearing the documented cache folders does not remove installed games. First exit the launcher completely, then follow the instructions for your operating system.
Windows
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher, thenSaved. - Delete the folders named
webcache,webcache_4147, and/orwebcache_4430if they exist. Not every installation has all of them. - Restart the launcher.
macOS
- Quit Epic Games Launcher.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncherand press Enter. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash if it exists, then relaunch the launcher.
Limit this cleanup to the web-cache folders. Do not delete game installation directories, save folders, manifests, or the entire Epic Games directory as a cache fix. See Epic’s cache and launcher troubleshooting instructions for the documented locations.
If only one game is stuck, verify its files
If the launcher opens and one installed game is affected, verify the game before reinstalling it:

- Find the game and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage, then Verify if that option is available.
- Wait for the check to finish, then retry the update or launch.
Verification checks the installed game files and may download missing or damaged data. It is different from clearing the launcher’s web cache, and it may still require a substantial download. Epic’s game troubleshooting guidance also points users to file verification for game problems.

Investigate security software and background apps carefully
Antivirus or endpoint security, Windows Controlled Folder Access, aggressive firewall rules, VPNs, proxies, overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, or download managers may interfere with launcher writes or child processes. Epic includes background applications among its troubleshooting areas, but permanently turning off protection is not a safe default.
If you suspect interference, use a short, controlled test: review security-software alerts or temporarily close nonessential background apps, retry once, and restore protection immediately. Where appropriate, allow the official Epic launcher or required component through the security software instead of leaving protection disabled. On a managed work or school device, contact its administrator before changing security settings.

An explicit EOS, Epic Online Services, or prerequisite-installation message points to a different failure than an ordinary game download. Note the exact wording and error code, restart Windows, and retry the official launcher update or installation. If the launcher works only when elevated, that may help identify a permissions issue.

Reinstalling the launcher repeatedly may not help if the blocked component or service is the underlying problem.

Reinstall the launcher only after safer checks
Reinstalling may repair a damaged launcher installation, but Epic warns that removing the launcher can remove installed titles. Before uninstalling, confirm you can sign back into your Epic account and access two-factor authentication, record where games are installed, and back up saves that are not synced to the cloud. Take note of custom paths and settings. Do not delete your entire game library as part of an ordinary launcher reinstall.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher.
- On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Epic Games Launcher, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from Epic’s official website and install it.
- Sign in and, where the launcher supports it, point it to the existing game location. Use Verify before choosing to download the entire game again.
If Windows itself blocks installation or removal of the launcher, Microsoft’s install and uninstall troubleshooting guidance may help with Windows program installation, update, or removal problems; it is not a fix for every Epic service or game issue. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so users still on Windows 10 should also account for that support status.
When to contact Epic Support
Contact Epic if the error persists after the relevant low-risk checks, especially if EOS installation repeatedly fails or an error code appears across multiple games. Include:
- The exact error text and code, plus a screenshot if useful.
- Your Windows or macOS version and launcher version, if visible.
- Whether one game or all games are affected.
- The installation drive, approximate free space, and whether it is local, removable, or network-based.
- Which steps changed the result, including administrator mode, cache clearing, or a different destination.
- Relevant logs if support requests them.
Do not include your password, authentication codes, or other account credentials in screenshots or support messages.
