A partner checks your government-issued identity document, and LinkedIn displays a verification detail on your profile. It can make it easier for recruiters, clients and new contacts to judge whether an account represents a real person.
It is not a background check or professional endorsement. The badge does not prove current employment, qualifications, licenses, expertise, good intentions, or that every message from the account is safe. Treat it as one security signal alongside normal scam checks.
What LinkedIn identity verification actually verifies
Identity verification confirms that a verification partner checked information from a government-issued identity document. Your document number and image are not displayed publicly, although the document’s issuing country may appear. LinkedIn groups this signal with other verification types in its Verified on LinkedIn system.
What the badge does not establish
- Current employment, job title or seniority.
- Education, professional licenses or expertise.
- That the account has never been hacked or taken over.
- That a job offer, investment pitch, payment request or link is legitimate.
- That recommendations, publications or business claims are accurate.
How other verification types differ
- Workplace verification establishes an association with a supported employer, commonly through a company email domain or employer-enabled credential; see LinkedIn’s workplace-verification guidance.
- Educational verification confirms an association with a supported institution through LinkedIn’s education arrangements.
- Recruiter labels are separate workplace or recruiter signals, not government-ID checks.
- Account-recovery checks are designed to restore access and are not automatically the same as adding a public profile verification.
Why LinkedIn offers it—and who benefits
The goal is to make impersonation and low-effort fake accounts harder and to give members another way to assess a contact. LinkedIn reported in March 2026 that more than 100 million members had added at least one verification; that is a company-reported figure, not an independent measurement (LinkedIn News).

Verification is especially useful for job seekers contacting unfamiliar employers, recruiters building candidate trust, freelancers and consultants meeting new clients, sales professionals, executives, creators and people whose names are frequently impersonated. An unverified profile is not automatically suspicious, and LinkedIn says adding a verification is optional.
Is it worth verifying?

Declining can be reasonable if you are uncomfortable sharing an ID or selfie, your document is unsupported, your professional name differs substantially from your legal name, you do not want the issuing country shown, or the feature is unavailable where you live. There is no requirement to buy CLEAR Plus or another subscription.
How to start verification in the LinkedIn app
- Open the latest LinkedIn mobile app and open your profile.
- Tap Resources (or its icon).
- Choose About this member, About this profile or the equivalent profile-information option.
- Tap Verify now and follow the provider shown.
Labels vary by app version, geography and rollout. The documented flows are mobile-app based; the option is generally not available from LinkedIn’s desktop website.

CLEAR verification
As documented on August 18, 2026, CLEAR’s LinkedIn route is for eligible members in the United States, Canada and Mexico. You need a valid government ID and a personal phone number; business phone numbers are not accepted. A free CLEAR account may be created during the process, and CLEAR Plus airport membership is not required (LinkedIn’s CLEAR instructions; CLEAR eligibility).

- Continue into CLEAR and enter a personal phone number or email address.
- Take the requested selfie.
- Photograph a valid, unexpired driver’s license, state ID or passport.
- Review the result and select Yes, Share to send it to LinkedIn.
- Return to LinkedIn and confirm that the badge appears.
The name on the document normally needs to match the LinkedIn profile name. In some U.S. cases LinkedIn may perform additional checks for an alternate name or alias.
Persona verification
Members routed to Persona are in a selected-country, country-specific program. Supported documents can change. Many routes require an NFC-enabled passport or other NFC-enabled government ID, an NFC-capable smartphone and a selfie. Eligibility can depend on profile location and document issuer (LinkedIn’s Persona instructions).

- Open the LinkedIn mobile app and choose Resources → About this member/profile → Verify now.
- Accept Persona’s identity-service terms and privacy policy.
- Photograph the supported ID.
- Scan its NFC chip when prompted.
- Take a selfie.
- Select Yes, Share to send the result and permitted related information to LinkedIn.
- Check your profile for the verification detail.
Persona, rather than LinkedIn, collects the identity-document and selfie data during this flow. Its end-user guide is at Persona’s LinkedIn verification help.

Availability and device requirements
Identity verification is not globally available. Provider assignment depends on your profile location, document issuer and type, phone number, device capabilities and LinkedIn’s rollout. A person in the same broad region may see Verify now while you do not. Do not misrepresent your location or use a VPN to force another provider. Check the current CLEAR and Persona requirements instead.
What happens to your ID, selfie and other data?
CLEAR profile verification
LinkedIn says that, after a successful verification, the date of birth and address supplied during the process are deleted after 24 hours. If verification fails, shared personal information may be retained for 30 days for troubleshooting. The actual ID information is not shown on your profile, although the issuing country may be. A successful CLEAR verification added to your profile automatically enrolls the supplied phone number in two-factor authentication; you can opt out later (LinkedIn Help).

Persona profile verification
Persona collects the ID and selfie. LinkedIn’s documented flow says it does not receive the biometric data, photos, ID numbers, or issue and expiration dates associated with the government ID. LinkedIn receives limited information needed to associate and secure the request, such as the name, ID type and issuer, and a Persona-generated identifier. You consent before Persona shares the result and related information (LinkedIn’s Persona data-sharing explanation).
Do not apply these statements to account recovery. LinkedIn documents a separate Persona process and different retention language for recovering account access.

A government-ID check raises the cost of creating some fake identities, and a visible badge gives you another signal when assessing a contact. It cannot guarantee that the person is honest, that the account is uncompromised, or that a message is safe.

- Inspect the sender’s profile history, activity and connections.
- Find the employer’s official website independently and verify recruiter details through a company domain.
- Never send money, passwords or sensitive documents in response to an unsolicited LinkedIn message.
- Treat urgency, secrecy, payment requests and unexpected off-platform links as warning signs.
- Open downloads and investment offers only after independent verification.
Troubleshooting
The verification option is missing
- Update the LinkedIn mobile app.
- Confirm your profile location and phone number are accurate.
- Try the profile’s Resources area in the app.
- Check whether your provider supports the ID type and issuing country.
- If it remains unavailable, use LinkedIn’s verification-support form rather than changing your location or using a VPN.
The ID or selfie scan fails
- Use an unexpired document; show all corners and security features without glare, blur or shadows.
- Allow camera access, clean the lens and use even lighting.
- For Persona, enable NFC if required, remove a thick phone case, place the top or back of the phone over the chip and hold it still for several seconds.
- Try another supported NFC device if your phone cannot read the chip.
Persona’s end-user guidance emphasizes clear document images, camera permission and NFC-capable documents (Persona).
The check succeeded but no badge appears
Selecting Yes, Share is essential; completing the provider’s check alone may not add the profile signal. Also confirm the profile name matches, that you completed the process inside the official app, restart or refresh LinkedIn, and verify that the provider returned a successful result rather than merely accepting images.
Your legal and professional names differ
Marriage or divorce, middle names, initials, transliteration, diacritics, name order, stage names and multilingual profiles can create mismatches. A mismatch can prevent the badge from appearing even when the provider can complete an identity check. LinkedIn may perform additional checks, especially in the United States. Do not change your profile dishonestly; use LinkedIn support if the name is legitimate but the match fails.
How to remove the verification
- Open Settings & Privacy in LinkedIn.
- Choose Account preferences.
- Select Verifications.
- Confirm deletion.
Removing it removes the badge and associated profile signal, and LinkedIn warns that it may not be restored automatically. Data held by CLEAR or Persona is governed separately by the provider’s privacy policy (CLEAR guidance; verification overview).

Bottom line
Verify if the added authenticity signal and, for CLEAR, stronger account security outweigh the privacy cost of submitting identity information. The badge is useful evidence that an identity check was completed—not proof that the profile, employer, offer or message is trustworthy.
