Windows 11 normally installs recommended hardware drivers through Windows Update, while optional driver updates usually require manual selection. Most users should leave this behavior enabled. If a Windows Update driver is causing crashes, display problems, audio failures, or conflicts with an OEM or manually installed driver, use the supported Do not include drivers with Windows Updates policy instead of disabling Windows Update entirely.

This policy is primarily available on Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and other managed editions. Windows 11 Home has fewer controls.

Before changing driver updates

  1. Press Win + R, enter winver, and check your Windows edition and build.
  2. Note the device model and current driver version in Device Manager.
  3. Create a restore point or backup before replacing a working driver.
  4. Remember that OEM utilities, GPU applications, Intune, Windows Autopatch, WSUS, and Configuration Manager can apply driver policies independently of local Windows Update settings.

Windows Update drivers, manufacturer drivers, firmware, and BIOS updates are not interchangeable. Firmware and BIOS packages may follow separate vendor or management policies.

Microsoft’s overview of recommended and optional driver behavior is available in its driver guidance.

#1 Best Overall

What Windows 11 updates automatically

  • Recommended drivers: Windows Update may download and install these automatically.
  • Optional drivers: These are generally listed for manual selection and are not normally installed automatically.
  • Manufacturer drivers: Drivers downloaded from a PC, motherboard, GPU, printer, or peripheral manufacturer are controlled by that source and its installer.
  • Firmware and BIOS: These may be delivered through a vendor utility or a separate Windows Update mechanism and should not automatically be treated like ordinary drivers.

How to check optional driver updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Open Advanced options.
  4. Select Optional updates.
  5. Expand Driver updates, if it appears.
  6. Select only the packages you want, then choose Download and install.

The exact labels can vary by Windows 11 build, edition, and device-management policy.

Enable automatic driver updates

Method 1: Restore the default Group Policy behavior

Use this method on Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and supported managed editions.

  1. Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage end user experience.
  3. Open Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
  4. Select Not Configured or Disabled.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
gpupdate /force

Restart Windows or allow Windows Update to refresh its policy state. With this exclusion policy disabled or not configured, Windows returns to its normal behavior of allowing driver-classified updates through Windows Update.

Microsoft documents this setting in its Windows Update policy reference.

Method 2: Use Device Installation Settings

This older, broader setting may be available on Home and other editions:

  • Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • Windows 11 Pro
  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter sysdm.cpl.
  3. Open the Hardware tab.
  4. Select Device Installation Settings.
  5. Choose Yes to allow Windows to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons.
  6. Select Save Changes.

This dialog is not a guaranteed replacement for the Windows Update driver policy. Group Policy, MDM, and other management settings can override it. Treat it as a general device-installation preference rather than a precise driver-update switch.

Disable automatic driver updates without disabling Windows Update

The most precise Microsoft-supported local method on supported editions is the driver-exclusion policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + R, enter gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage end user experience.
  3. Open Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
  4. Select Enabled.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Run this command from an elevated Command Prompt:
gpupdate /force

Restart the computer or wait for Windows Update to re-evaluate the policy. This excludes driver updates delivered through Windows Update while leaving ordinary quality and security updates available.

It does not remove a driver that is already installed, roll back a driver, or necessarily stop an OEM or GPU vendor application from installing its own packages.

Registry equivalent for managed systems

Microsoft documents the policy-backed registry location as:

The policy value is:

ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate

Set it to 1 to exclude Windows Update drivers from quality updates. Remove the value or set it to 0 to return to the normal non-excluded behavior.

Use Registry Editor only if you understand policy-backed registry settings. Create a restore point or registry backup first; incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems. Do not confuse this value with NoAutoUpdate=1, which disables automatic updates globally and is not an appropriate driver-only solution.

Windows 11 Home limitations

Windows 11 Home generally does not include the Local Group Policy Editor, so gpedit.msc may not open. The legacy Device Installation Settings dialog may still be available, but it is less granular and should not be described as equivalent to the documented driver-exclusion policy.

Avoid unofficial “debloat” scripts or registry packages as the default solution. They can disable security and quality updates, be difficult to reverse, and behave differently across Windows builds. If you need centrally managed driver control, use a supported Windows edition or an organizational management tool.

Block only one troublesome device

If one device is the problem, a device-specific restriction is safer than blocking every Windows Update driver on the computer.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Choose Hardware Ids or Device instance path.
  5. Copy the relevant identifier.

On supported editions, the relevant policies are under the Device Installation Restrictions area of Group Policy. They include:

  • Prevent installation of devices that match these device IDs
  • Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device instance IDs
  • Prevent installation of devices using drivers that match these device setup classes
  • Prevent installation of removable devices

Microsoft documents the specificity order as device instance IDs > device IDs > device setup class > removable devices when layered evaluation is enabled. Prevent policies generally take precedence over allow policies. These controls are powerful: a broad class restriction can affect more devices than intended.

See Microsoft’s device installation restriction guidance before applying one.

Manually install a preferred driver

  1. Use the PC or device manufacturer’s official support page.
  2. Match the exact model, hardware revision where applicable, and Windows 11 version.
  3. Prefer digitally signed packages from the manufacturer.
  4. Create a restore point or backup before replacing a working driver.
  5. Install the package according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Restart Windows and check the device in Device Manager.
  7. Keep the installer and record the driver version and hardware ID.

For laptops, the OEM driver may preserve features such as brightness controls, sleep behavior, audio enhancements, power management, or graphics switching. GPU vendors may offer newer drivers, but a manufacturer-tested package can be more appropriate for a particular laptop or professional application.

Blocking future Windows Update driver delivery does not undo an existing installation. Windows Update client policies also do not provide driver rollback.

  1. Open Device Manager, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
  2. If rollback is unavailable, install the known-good driver from the manufacturer.
  3. Use System Restore if the problem began after a recent change.
  4. For an unstable system, use Safe Mode to remove or replace the problematic driver.
  5. Temporarily exclude Windows Update drivers before reinstalling the preferred package.

Uninstalling a device or driver package can cause Windows to reinstall a compatible driver after reboot. Use that option carefully and keep the correct manufacturer package ready.

Why you should not disable Windows Update

Stopping the Windows Update service or disabling automatic updates globally is much broader than controlling driver delivery. It can prevent security fixes and quality updates, make maintenance harder, and still fail to stop an OEM or third-party updater.

The driver-specific exclusion policy gives you control over Windows Update driver content without intentionally blocking ordinary Windows updates. Microsoft recommends allowing the default driver behavior unless there is a specific reason to manage drivers manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore automatic driver updates later

  1. Open gpedit.msc.
  2. Return to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage end user experience.
  3. Open Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
  4. Select Not Configured or Disabled.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Run gpupdate /force and restart or check Windows Update.

If you used the registry-backed setting, remove ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate or set it to 0. Review OEM and GPU vendor utilities separately because they are independent update channels.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Action
The driver keeps installing An OEM utility, GPU application, or management policy is installing it. Check vendor tools and whether the device is managed by Intune, Autopatch, WSUS, or Configuration Manager.
The policy is missing Windows Home, outdated administrative templates, or a different policy path. Check the edition with winver and confirm the current Microsoft policy documentation.
The device has no working driver A restriction was too broad or the preferred package was not installed. Reverse the restriction and install the correct manufacturer driver.
A bad driver is already installed The exclusion policy does not roll back existing drivers. Use Device Manager rollback, System Restore, Safe Mode, or a manual reinstall.
An optional driver is still listed Being listed is not the same as being installed. Leave it unselected or install it manually after checking compatibility.

Best choice for most users

Leave automatic recommended-driver updates enabled if your hardware works normally. If one update causes a specific problem, first consider a device-specific restriction or temporarily enable Do not include drivers with Windows Updates. Continue maintaining drivers manually while the block is active, then restore the default policy when the compatibility issue is resolved.
