On July 15, 2024, Elon Musk said two people had tried to kill him in separate incidents and responded to a suggestion that he strengthen his security by musing about a “flying metal suit of armor.” The alleged incidents were not independently verified in the contemporaneous coverage, and Musk did not announce a project to build the suit.
What Musk said in July 2024
In posts reported on July 15, 2024, Musk claimed that two people had tried to kill him on separate occasions during the preceding eight months. He said they were arrested with guns about 20 minutes from Tesla’s Texas headquarters. Those details are Musk’s account, not independently established facts in the available reporting.
In a separate reply, after another user urged him to improve his security, Musk wrote that it might be time to build a “flying metal suit of armor.” The contemporaneous account of his posts is Futurism’s July 15, 2024 report.

Why the remarks came after the Trump rally shooting
The exchange followed the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Musk’s armor comment came in response to a social-media call for greater protection after that attack; it was not presented as a response to a newly disclosed incident involving Musk.

What is—and is not—known about the alleged incidents
Musk had reportedly made a similar claim earlier in 2024 during an X Spaces conversation with Gad Saad, saying that two people had come to Austin with guns and intended to kill him. The account remains attributable to Musk: the available contemporaneous coverage does not independently confirm the arrests or establish the alleged suspects’ identities, the dates and locations, charges, motives, or whether authorities classified either event as an attempt on his life.
That distinction matters. Musk’s public statement is documented; the underlying events, as described, are not substantiated by the cited reporting. It would therefore be inaccurate to state as fact that he survived two assassination attempts or that police foiled two plots.

Was Musk seriously proposing an armored flying suit?
The wording appears to invoke Iron Man, the fictional Marvel hero, rather than announce a real engineering or security program. The remark appeared in a social-media reply, and Musk provided no design, schedule, budget, technical details, or company assignment. The available reporting does not show that Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, or another company was developing such a suit. Musk did not clarify whether he meant the idea literally.

Flight and ballistic protection pull a wearable vehicle in opposite directions. Armor adds weight; more weight requires more thrust and energy, which in turn increases demands on the power source, structure, and heat management. A practical system would also need stable controls, redundant systems, safe emergency landing options, and a way to operate without endangering bystanders.

Those are engineering requirements, not evidence of a project. A personal flying platform should not be confused with an Iron Man-style suit that can also provide meaningful protection against gunfire.

Musk made the reported claim about two alleged threats and the “flying metal suit” remark after the July 13, 2024 Trump rally shooting. The claim about the incidents remains unverified in the cited coverage, and no evidence there indicates that a flying armored suit was being built.
