Elon Musk did say that Google co-founder Larry Page wanted “digital superintelligence”—which Musk described as “basically a digital god.” But the remark came from Musk’s account of a private conversation during a Tucker Carlson interview on April 17, 2023. It was not a Google announcement, a confirmed product plan, or independent evidence that Page was building a system literally called a “digital god.”

Musk also claimed that Page was not sufficiently concerned about AI safety. According to Musk, when he argued that AI development should protect humanity, Page called him a “speciesist.” The relevant exchange is preserved in video, while contemporaneous reports and transcript-style clips provide additional context.

Who was Musk talking about?
The person identified by Musk was Larry Page, who co-founded Google with Sergey Brin. Page later served as chief executive of Google’s parent company, Alphabet.
Musk described Page as a former close friend and said the two had discussed artificial-intelligence safety at Page’s home. That personal connection formed the basis of Musk’s account, but the available coverage does not independently document the private conversation or establish exactly what Page said.
Does “digital god” mean Google is building one?

In ethics and philosophy, speciesism generally refers to assigning different moral consideration based on species membership—for example, giving human interests greater weight than the interests of animals or other forms of consciousness.

Musk used the label in a broader argument that AI should be developed in a way that prioritizes human survival and interests. Why did Musk connect the story to OpenAI?

Musk’s comments reflect several unresolved debates in AI development:
- Control: Can humans reliably supervise systems that become more capable than their operators?
- Regulation: Should governments impose safety requirements before highly capable models are deployed?
- Openness: Should powerful AI systems be openly accessible, or should access and development be restricted?
- Values: Who decides which principles an AI system should follow, and how should those principles be enforced?
- Corporate power: Should a small number of companies control the computing resources, talent, and models needed to develop frontier AI?
These are real policy and technical questions. They do not, however, turn Musk’s metaphor into evidence that Google or Page was constructing a supernatural entity.

The wording “Google co-founder is building a digital god” changes several important details:
- It turns a 2023 interview into what sounds like a current development.
- It changes Musk’s claim that Page wanted superintelligence into an assertion that Page was actively building it.
- It treats a metaphor as though it were a technical project description.
- It shifts an allegation about Page personally onto Google, Alphabet, or Google’s AI organizations.
A more accurate summary is: Elon Musk alleged in 2023 that Larry Page favored the rapid creation of artificial superintelligence and used “digital god” as a metaphor for the result. The underlying allegation has not been independently confirmed in the cited reporting.
Bottom line: did Larry Page build a “digital god”?
Musk definitely made the remark. He said Larry Page wanted a form of digital superintelligence and connected that ambition to a private dispute about whether AI should prioritize humanity.
