Elon Musk expressed enthusiasm for a supersonic electric aircraft, but his remarks were not an announcement that Tesla or SpaceX is developing one. In an October 7, 2021 post, he said he was “so dying to do a supersonic, electric VTOL jet.” He offered no aircraft specifications, company program, funding, prototype or timeline. The statement is best understood as an aspiration, not evidence of an active aircraft project.
What Musk said in 2021
Musk posted the remark on X on October 7, 2021, in response to Peter Diamandis asking what industry Musk should tackle next. Diamandis nominated aviation; Musk replied that he was eager to take on a supersonic electric VTOL jet, then joked that adding more work would make his brain “explode.” Read Musk’s post on X.
“Dying to” is an idiom for being very eager. It was not a literal statement about his health. The post also did not name a model, specify a speed, range, passenger capacity or budget, or identify a development partner. It used “VTOL,” meaning vertical takeoff and landing; the wording was reproduced with a typo as “VOTL” in some contemporary coverage.

Musk had made a similar post on July 27, 2021: “I’m so dying to do a supersonic vtol electric jet! But I already have way too much on my plate.” See the earlier post. Repeating the idea indicates continuing personal interest, but it does not establish that engineering or company development had begun.

He had discussed the idea before
On the September 6, 2018 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk talked through an electric-aircraft concept. He described a vehicle that would take off vertically, transition into level flight and cruise at high altitude. He also said the propulsion useful for vertical takeoff would not necessarily work well for high-speed flight, and identified battery energy density as a major constraint. At the time, he said electric aviation was not a priority compared with electric cars, solar energy and stationary storage. Those 2018 comments help explain what Musk meant by the idea, but they should not be mistaken for a current project plan. Together, the interview and posts show a recurring interest in electric aviation. They do not supply public evidence of a formal aircraft program or progress toward one.

Why combining electric, supersonic and VTOL is demanding
The three terms describe separate requirements, not a ready-made design:
- Electric: Electric motors would be powered by batteries or another onboard electrical-energy system. “Electric” does not by itself mean that the entire aircraft operation has no emissions: electricity generation, manufacturing, airport operations and any hybrid or auxiliary energy system also matter.
- Supersonic: The aircraft would fly faster than the speed of sound. Musk did not state a target speed or provide a design from which one could be inferred.
- VTOL: The aircraft would take off and land vertically, reducing or avoiding reliance on a runway. Hovering demands substantial thrust, while efficient high-speed cruise calls for a different combination of aerodynamics and propulsion. A design has to manage the transition between those flight modes.
That transition is not a minor detail: Musk himself noted in 2018 that a system suited to vertical takeoff would not necessarily be suited to high-speed flight. A designer would also have to account for energy consumed in hover and climb, drag and aerodynamic heating at high speed, and safe control if a motor or battery system failed.

Batteries make the energy-storage problem especially consequential because an aircraft must lift its energy supply. Battery mass affects takeoff, climb and the rest of the flight; energy reserved for hovering and landing cannot also be spent on cruise. Without a disclosed design, battery capacity, range, payload, passenger count, charging time and reserve-energy requirements are all unknown. No reliable figures for those characteristics can be attributed to Musk’s remarks.
Supersonic flight also brings noise, heating and structural demands. Vertical lift and airport operations add their own noise and safety concerns. Certification and rules on where an aircraft may operate would matter alongside technical feasibility. Musk’s posts did not address these questions, and they do not establish that such a jet could routinely use urban locations or fly over cities.

Is Tesla or SpaceX building the jet?
The cited posts and interview do not announce an aircraft program at Tesla or SpaceX. They provide no named corporate project, prototype, specifications, development budget, flight-test campaign or target date. Musk’s leadership of companies in other industries is not evidence that either company has adopted this concept.
That is a narrow conclusion about what the available statements establish—not proof that no private work or discussion has ever taken place. Based on the evidence cited here, the aircraft remains an uncommitted concept rather than a publicly established Tesla or SpaceX program.

What would count as evidence of development?
A real program would be easier to distinguish from an expression of interest if it produced concrete, verifiable milestones: a named company or aircraft program; a design disclosure with specifications; prototype construction; ground or flight testing; aircraft-engineering and certification hiring; regulatory filings; funding or manufacturing commitments; or a stated development schedule. None of those milestones is supplied by the 2018 interview or the 2021 posts.
The accurate takeaway is that Musk has repeatedly said he wants to work on a supersonic electric VTOL aircraft. His comments reveal an ambitious aviation idea, not a confirmed jet in development.
