Yes, Elon Musk made the remark. In an April 2022 conversation with TED’s Chris Anderson, he said romantic or sexual relationships with robots were “probably inevitable,” referred to having promised the internet he would make catgirls, and added: “We could make a robot catgirl.”
But that was a speculative, jokey comment—not an announcement that Tesla was building or selling a catgirl sex robot. As of August 18, 2026, there is no verified evidence that Tesla has announced a catgirl version of Optimus or commercialized an adult humanoid robot.
What Elon Musk actually said
The comment came during a wider discussion about humanoid robots and Tesla’s robot project. When asked whether robots might eventually become romantic or sexual partners, Musk responded that such a development was “probably inevitable.” He then said he had “promised the internet” he would make catgirls and concluded: “We could make a robot catgirl.”

Why the headline says “sex robots”
“Catgirl sex robot” is a shorthand interpretation of the exchange, not Musk’s exact product announcement or a complete quotation. The surrounding question was about romantic and sexual robot partners, while Musk’s own wording was about making a “robot catgirl.”
In popular culture, a catgirl is a fictional or stylized female character with features such as cat ears, a tail, or whiskers. It is an aesthetic and cultural concept—not a technical robotics category or a defined product specification.
Was this a Tesla announcement?
No. Tesla was developing a general-purpose humanoid robot called Optimus, which supplied the technological context for the conversation. However, the available evidence does not connect Optimus to sexual functionality, a catgirl design, or an adult companion product.

At the time of the 2022 discussion, Tesla’s public robot demonstration was still an early-stage presentation rather than a mature, commercially available autonomous humanoid. Musk also made optimistic predictions about when a prototype and useful robot might appear. Those were statements made in 2022, not verified delivery commitments.
There is likewise no verified evidence, as of August 2026, that Tesla has released, announced, or sold a catgirl-themed sex robot. Musk’s comment should not be rewritten as “Tesla is making catgirl robots.”
Musk had mentioned catgirls before
The 2022 remark also fit an earlier joke. In 2019, Musk described an upcoming Tesla software feature as a “crucial step towards catgirls.” That reference helps explain the internet-culture context, but it is not evidence of a sustained Tesla catgirl project.

What companion robots actually exist in 2026?
Today’s market includes companion bots, robotic pets, humanoid platforms, and android concepts. They are not interchangeable, and none of the products below should automatically be described as a sex robot.

Why these products are not equivalent to Musk’s imagined robot
A robot can be marketed as a companion without being human-shaped, sexually capable, or broadly autonomous. A useful comparison should separate several different qualities:

- Privacy: local processing and offline operation differ materially from a product that depends on a cloud account, subscription, or vendor-controlled servers.
Even a humanoid body does not imply humanlike dexterity, safe physical contact, reliable balance, realistic tactile sensing, or intimate-use capability. “AI companion” can describe anything from scripted personality routines to a generative conversational system.

To qualify as something close to the imagined product, a manufacturer would need to document far more than a humanoid appearance or conversational AI. Relevant questions would include:

- Does it have reliable tactile sensing and force limits for close physical interaction?
- How are batteries, motors, heat, noise, and maintenance handled?
- Are materials cleanable and suitable for repeated contact?
- What happens if the robot loses connectivity or the company shuts down its servers?
- What personal, voice, image, and interaction data are collected?
- How are consent, misuse, cybersecurity, injury, and liability risks addressed?
- Is the product actually shipping, or is it only a prototype, announcement, or pre-order?
These are engineering, privacy, and safety considerations—not proof that any particular company has solved them. Legal requirements and safety standards also vary by jurisdiction and should not be inferred from a marketing page.

That does not mean he announced a Tesla sex robot. The comment was speculative and playful, made in the context of humanoid robotics and Tesla’s Optimus project.
