Yes—Elon Musk really carried a sink into Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters on October 26, 2022. He posted a video of himself walking through the lobby with what appeared to be a ceramic sink, captioned: “Entering Twitter HQ—let that sink in!”
Why did Elon Musk carry a sink into Twitter HQ?
It was a visual pun on the phrase “let that sink in.” Musk brought the sink into the building so the joke would work literally, while also signaling that his takeover of Twitter was moving from a legal agreement to a physical presence at the company.
The video came from Musk himself, rather than from an anonymous bystander. Contemporary coverage identified the location as Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco and described the object as what appeared to be a ceramic sink. There is no reliable evidence in the available reporting that it came from Musk’s home, belonged to Twitter, or was installed in the office.
Musk’s post and the contemporaneous report placed the stunt during the final stage of his proposed $44 billion acquisition of Twitter.

The visit followed months of uncertainty over whether Musk would complete the purchase. He had agreed to acquire Twitter for approximately $44 billion, then became involved in a prolonged dispute over the deal. By October 26, reports indicated that he intended to proceed, and employees had reportedly been told he would visit the San Francisco office.
Was the incident later corroborated?
Yes. Walter Isaacson later recalled the arrival in the PBS FRONTLINE documentary Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover. Isaacson said he was in the lobby with then-Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and other executives when Musk entered carrying the sink. This later account supports the basic details shown in Musk’s video.

What was the sink supposed to mean?
The gesture carried several overlapping meanings:
- A literal joke: The sink made “let that sink in” into a physical gag.
- A takeover signal: Musk was visibly entering the company he was preparing to control.
- A statement about tone: The stunt suggested a highly theatrical, social-media-driven style of communicating with the public.
The first two points are clear from the video and its timing. The third is an interpretation, not a documented statement of Musk’s intent. Likewise, coverage differed on whether employees saw the stunt as playful, unsettling, or simply theatrical. It is not accurate to claim that all Twitter employees reacted in the same way.

Did carrying the sink mean Musk had already bought Twitter?
Not by itself. The visit happened during the final phase of the acquisition, but entering the headquarters was not the same thing as completing the legal and financial closing process. The sink was a public signal that the deal appeared imminent, not proof that the physical act itself finalized the purchase.

Musk’s takeover was followed by extensive changes at Twitter, including restructuring and layoffs. The company was later rebranded as X. Those developments provide hindsight that made the sink image seem emblematic of the upheaval ahead, but the stunt itself did not cause the layoffs or the subsequent changes.
