In a post reported by Futurism on November 19, 2021, Elon Musk wrote: “Don’t want to brag but… I’m the best at humility.” The joke is in the contradiction: calling yourself “the best” at modesty is itself a boast.
Why the line works as a humblebrag
The sentence starts with a disclaimer against self-promotion, then immediately makes an absolute claim. That clash is the familiar structure of a humblebrag: a show of modesty that draws attention to the speaker, here by claiming unmatched humility.
It can read as self-mockery, an intentionally silly boast, or both. The post itself does not explain Musk’s intent, so none of those readings can be treated as confirmed.
How Futurism framed the post
Futurism described the line as likely a cheesy dad joke, while suggesting it might also show some self-awareness. Its headline’s use of “brags” is a playful description of the contradiction, not evidence that Musk was making a serious claim about his character.

The article set the joke against a public image marked by confident statements and superlatives, while also pointing to occasions when Musk acknowledged mistakes. It cited his comment that Tesla’s self-driving software was “not great” and his statement, “If we are wrong, we are wrong,” in connection with a Tesla range-related settlement. Those examples provide context for Futurism’s framing; they do not establish a measure of anyone’s humility.
When did Musk post it?
Futurism’s contemporaneous article is dated November 19, 2021, and is the strongest date evidence available here. A later tweet-aggregation page lists the same wording under March 20, 2022, but that conflicts with the earlier report. The original X post has not been independently verified from an official post in the available sources, so the exact posting date should be treated with that qualification.

What the tweet does—and does not—show
On its own, the post is a brief piece of wordplay about the difficulty of claiming modesty while boasting. It is not a formal interview statement, a measurable achievement, or enough evidence to draw a firm conclusion about Musk’s personality or motives.
