ElevenLabs announced Turbo v2.5 on July 19, 2024, as a low-latency text-to-speech model supporting 32 languages. It was designed for conversational AI and other applications where audio needs to start quickly. In 2026, however, ElevenLabs describes Turbo v2.5 as a first-generation low-latency model and recommends Flash v2.5 for new projects when the results are similar.
In brief: Turbo v2.5 remains available under the model ID eleven_turbo_v2_5, with provider-reported typical latency of about 250–300 ms. Keep it if an existing integration or listening tests favor its output; for a new low-latency build, compare Flash v2.5 first.
What ElevenLabs announced
The July 19, 2024 launch introduced Eleven Turbo v2.5 as a multilingual text-to-speech model aimed at conversational AI, chatbots, voice agents, games and interactive applications. ElevenLabs said it supported 32 languages and generated speech in several languages up to three times faster than before, while English generation was 25% faster. Those are the company’s launch comparisons, not a universal benchmark across every voice, language, prompt or deployment.

“Supports” means the model can synthesize in these languages; it does not promise the same pronunciation, naturalness or voice choices in each one. Voice availability and voice performance are separate from the model’s language list. How fast is Turbo v2.5?
ElevenLabs currently puts Turbo v2.5’s typical latency at approximately 250–300 ms; its conversational-model guidance describes generation as around 300 ms. These are approximate provider-reported model figures, not an end-to-end promise for a voice agent. Network round trips, API gateway and queue time, prompt length, concurrency, buffering, decoding and playback startup can all add delay.

Streaming can make an application feel faster because playback may begin before the full response has been generated. For a useful benchmark, measure time to first audio, time to usable spoken output, time to complete the clip and the full conversational turn under realistic network and concurrency conditions. The TTS API supports streaming.
For comparison, ElevenLabs lists Flash v2.5 at approximately 75 ms. That figure is also a provider-reported model latency estimate, not the total time a user will wait. The company says Flash offers significantly lower latency with similar results in relevant use cases.

ElevenLabs’ current model documentation calls Turbo v2.5 a first-generation low-latency model and recommends Flash v2.5 when the results are similar. This makes Flash the practical starting point for a new fast TTS integration, not simply another name for Turbo. Eleven v3 serves a different priority—expressiveness over a tight response loop—so it is not a direct Turbo replacement.

Using Turbo v2.5 in an API integration
The model ID is eleven_turbo_v2_5. Use it in an API request when you need to select Turbo v2.5; the model ID help page explains where to find IDs. For a new low-latency integration, check the current model documentation for the recommended alternative, eleven_flash_v2_5, and verify model IDs and request syntax against the current API reference rather than copying an older SDK example.
Turbo v2.5’s documented request limit is 40,000 characters. Streaming is available, but it does not remove network or generation time. Evaluate the model with the voices, languages, text lengths and concurrency levels expected in production. If an existing Turbo deployment is stable, do not migrate solely because Flash is newer: compare both with identical inputs, then review the resulting quality and total response time.
One practical caveat is number and text normalization. Dates, phone numbers, currencies, addresses, abbreviations and product codes may be spoken in an unexpected way. ElevenLabs documents a text-normalization control for v2.5 models; its guidance says Enterprise customers can enable it with apply_text_normalization set to on, and recommends Multilingual v2 when number normalization is especially important. If that option is unavailable, normalize critical text in your application before synthesis and test the spoken result; preprocessing reduces surprises but does not guarantee perfect pronunciation.

ElevenLabs’ help documentation lists Turbo and Flash at 0.5 credits per character, excluding credit multipliers. That credit rate is not the same thing as an API price per character or the monthly cost of a subscription.

Do not infer that a provider is cheaper from a headline rate alone. Compare the same amount of generated text, voice category, included usage, caching, streaming and any additional infrastructure charges. Google Cloud lists Standard and WaveNet voices at $4 per million characters after applicable free allowances, with other voice categories priced differently. Amazon Polly lists Standard at $4, Neural at $16, Long-Form at $100 and Generative at $30 per million characters, outside applicable free tiers. Those are different services and voice classes, so the numbers are not a like-for-like quality comparison. See Google Cloud TTS pricing and Amazon Polly pricing.
When to use Turbo—and when to choose something else
- Choose Turbo v2.5 if a deployed application depends on it, migration risk is significant, or tests show a particular voice or prosody works better for your needs. Its roughly 250–300 ms model latency may be acceptable where absolute minimum delay is not essential.
- Start with Flash v2.5 for a new ElevenLabs voice agent, chatbot, game or interactive experience where low latency is the main requirement. It has the same listed 32-language coverage and is ElevenLabs’ recommended low-latency choice for similar results. Check its normalization behavior for your text.
- Consider Multilingual v2 for longer narration or when number handling and long-form stability matter more than speed, provided its 29-language coverage is enough.
- Consider Eleven v3 when dramatic delivery, emotional range or multi-speaker character performance matters more than response speed.
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech can suit teams already operating on Google Cloud or prioritizing usage-based infrastructure billing; Amazon Polly offers a similar AWS-native path. Both can be compelling for commodity synthesis, but price alone does not measure voice identity or expressive quality. Microsoft Azure Speech is another relevant option for Microsoft-centric enterprises needing Azure integration, SSML and speech tooling; check its official text-to-speech overview, REST reference and current pricing before choosing.
Bottom line
Turbo v2.5 was a meaningful 2024 step toward multilingual, lower-latency TTS, but the 32-language launch claim does not make it the best choice for every language or voice. In 2026, treat it as an available, first-generation option rather than the default for a new real-time build. Start new latency-sensitive work with Flash v2.5, test the actual voice and languages, and benchmark the whole application. Keep a working Turbo integration unless a measured comparison justifies changing it.
