Intune can centrally configure many Windows power options, including screen and sleep timeouts, hibernation, lid-close behavior, and power-button actions. For most managed PCs, the clearest approach is a Windows Settings catalog profile with separate values for battery and plugged-in use. Apply it to a pilot group first: Windows version, hardware, existing policies, and OEM utilities can all affect the result.
What Intune can manage
Intune exposes many Windows power controls through the Windows Power Policy CSP. Availability varies by setting, Windows edition and version, and device capabilities; this is not a universal switch for every power feature.
| Control | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Display timeout | When the screen turns off, with separate battery and AC values. |
| Sleep timeout | When Windows enters sleep after inactivity, again separately for battery and AC. |
| Unattended sleep and hibernate timeouts | Additional timers for supported scenarios; these are distinct from ordinary sleep and display timers. |
| Lid, power, and sleep buttons | Actions such as do nothing, sleep, hibernate, or shut down, where supported. |
| Hibernate | Whether hibernation is allowed and when a device should hibernate. |
| Energy Saver | The battery percentage at which Energy Saver turns on; the documented threshold range is 0–100. |
| Hybrid Sleep | Whether Windows uses Hybrid Sleep on battery or AC. |
| Require password on wake | A power-management setting for requiring authentication after waking. It is not a substitute for sign-in, lock-screen, Windows Hello, or Conditional Access policy. |
| Power-setting access | A separate restriction can block users from changing power and sleep settings through Windows. |
These controls are not interchangeable. A display timeout turns off the screen; sleep suspends the session; hibernation saves session state to disk and powers down more fully. Energy Saver changes energy-saving behavior rather than setting a sleep timer. Timeout values in the CSP are generally in seconds: 5 minutes is 300, 10 minutes is 600, 15 minutes is 900, 30 minutes is 1,800, and one hour is 3,600.
Prerequisites and compatibility
- The Windows device must be enrolled and receiving Intune configuration policies.
- Check the minimum Windows version and edition for each exact setting in Microsoft’s Power Policy CSP. For example, display-off timeout settings are listed from Windows 10 version 1709, lid and button settings from Windows 10 version 1903, and AllowHibernate for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise.
- Identify existing Group Policy, power-plan configuration, scripts, and OEM power utilities before deployment. Avoid assigning competing profiles that configure the same setting.
- Use a small pilot group that represents the actual hardware and use cases. Test both battery and AC operation.
Create a focused power profile in Settings catalog
- In the Microsoft Intune admin center, open Devices, then the Windows configuration or configuration-policies area. Portal wording can vary as Microsoft updates the interface.
- Select Create or Create policy, choose Windows 10 and later as the platform, and choose Settings catalog as the profile type.
- Name the profile for its device class and intent, such as
Windows Power - Standard Laptop. - Select Add settings and search for Power. Add only the controls you intend to manage, such as display-off timeout, standby timeout, hibernate timeout, lid-close action, power-button action, or Allow hibernate.
- Set battery and plugged-in values independently where the setting offers both. Confirm timeout units in the setting description; CSP time values are generally seconds.
- Review assignments and target a test-device group. Create the profile, then wait for device check-in or initiate a sync from the managed device.
- Review the profile’s device and setting status in Intune, then test the actual behavior on the PC. Microsoft’s Settings catalog guidance describes creating, configuring, and assigning these profiles.
For a compact reference, the CSP names are more stable than portal labels, which can change:

Example values by device type
The following are starting-point examples, not Microsoft defaults or universal recommendations. Adjust them for work patterns, power needs, and organizational requirements.
| Device profile | Battery | Plugged in |
|---|---|---|
| Standard business laptop | Display off after 600 seconds; sleep after 1,800 seconds; consider hibernate after 10,800 seconds. Lid close: sleep. | Display off after 900 seconds; sleep after 3,600 seconds. Lid close: sleep. Set button actions to match support and safety requirements. |
| Battery-conservation laptop | Use shorter display and sleep timeouts than the standard profile; consider an Energy Saver threshold such as 30–40% and test it with users. | Use longer timeouts if the workload benefits; avoid configuring an AC Energy Saver threshold without a specific reason. |
| Desktop or workstation | Usually not applicable if the device has no battery. | Choose display and sleep timers around maintenance, remote access, and long-running workloads. Do not assume that a short sleep timer is suitable for machines expected to remain available. |
| Shared or classroom device | Use a predictable, tested inactivity policy, taking account of classes or shared sessions. | Choose timeouts that fit room use and maintenance. Consider the Shared PC template if the device is genuinely multi-user or guest-style. |
Sleep usually resumes faster, while hibernation saves the session to disk and powers down more fully. The trade-offs depend on hardware, supported sleep states, workload, and resume needs; neither is always the best choice. Disabling hibernation can also affect Fast Startup and recovery behavior, so treat it as a deliberate policy decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDecide whether users may change power settings
Setting a timeout and controlling who can edit it are separate tasks. In the Windows device-restriction template, Power and sleep settings modification set to Block prevents users from changing power and sleep settings through the targeted Windows interface. Not configured leaves users able to change them.

Blocking changes can make sense for public, shared, classroom, or tightly managed devices. For ordinary laptops, consider deploying sensible defaults while leaving users some control if their work requires it. The restriction is not proof that every administrative, lower-level, or OEM mechanism is blocked.
When to use a device-restriction or Shared PC template
Use Settings catalog for a focused power policy. Use the device-restriction template when power settings belong alongside a broader Windows restrictions baseline and you also want its user-modification control.
For multi-user or guest-style devices, the Shared PC template has a power-management control. When enabled, users can hibernate, close the lid to sleep, and change power settings; when disabled, users cannot turn off hibernate, override sleep actions such as lid close, or change power settings. It also supports a shared-device sleep timeout in seconds; Microsoft documents a 3,600-second (60-minute) default when no value is configured. Shared PC settings can affect more than ordinary power behavior, so do not apply them to every laptop by default.

In Intune, check the target device’s last check-in, assignment, filters or group membership, profile status, per-setting status where available, and any reported error. A profile marked successful is not a substitute for testing behavior on battery and AC power.

On the device, review Settings > System > Power & battery and, where available, Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Test the physical lid and buttons, verify Energy Saver behavior at the selected threshold, and check whether the intended user can edit settings. Some legacy Control Panel views may not reflect policy results in the same way as the modern Settings app; validate the behavior, not just the displayed value.
These built-in commands help establish what Windows is doing:
powercfg /getactivescheme
powercfg /query
powercfg /a
powercfg /requests
powercfg /lastwake
/getactiveschemeidentifies the active power plan./querydisplays configured power-plan values./alists sleep states available on the device./requestscan reveal applications, drivers, or services preventing sleep./lastwakereports the last wake source.
These are diagnostic tools; they are not necessarily the mechanism Intune uses to apply a CSP policy.
Troubleshoot settings that do not take effect
The profile is assigned but behavior is unchanged
Check device check-in, assignment and filters, setting-level status, Windows compatibility, and whether another Intune profile configures the same CSP setting. Also look for Group Policy, scripts, active power plans, OEM utilities, firmware, or drivers that may affect the result. Maintain one authoritative power baseline for each device class, and pilot changes before broad deployment.

Hibernate is unavailable
Run powercfg /a to see supported states. Microsoft documents an important exception: Intune’s AllowHibernate policy does not override a device where hibernation was disabled with powercfg /hibernate off or the relevant registry value. An administrator may need to re-enable hibernation using powercfg /hibernate on and then verify the policy and device state. See Microsoft’s AllowHibernate documentation.
Sleep does not happen at the configured time
Run powercfg /requests. Active media, remote-management tools, scheduled tasks, maintenance or update activity, presentation mode, network requirements, docks, USB devices, or a driver can keep a system awake. Address the request or workload rather than assuming the timeout was ignored.
Lid-close action differs from the policy
Confirm that the action was configured for the power state being tested: battery and AC have separate values. Then check supported sleep states with powercfg /a, and consider device classification, Modern Standby, firmware, drivers, and OEM software. Hardware behavior may differ from traditional S3 sleep assumptions.
The user can still edit settings
Verify that the device received the profile and that Power and sleep settings modification is set to Block, not left unconfigured. Check for assignment mistakes, competing profiles, and alternate legacy interfaces. The setting is a user-interface restriction, not a guarantee against all administrative changes.

Battery and AC results seem reversed or inconsistent
Test each setting in both power states and confirm the correct battery or plugged-in value was configured. A laptop may behave correctly on AC while using a different timeout on battery; testing only while docked can conceal that distinction.
Licensing and alternatives
Ordinary Windows configuration policies for display, sleep, hibernate, lid, and button behavior use core Intune device-management functionality; advanced Intune add-ons are not required solely for these power settings. Intune Plan 1 is the direct management option, but many organizations already have Intune rights through Microsoft 365 E3/E5, EMS, or another qualifying plan. Check the current Microsoft Intune licensing page and your agreement for regional pricing and entitlements. The dossier’s pricing review was dated August 18, 2026; amounts and included capabilities can change, so no price is necessary to implement this policy.
Plan 2 or the Intune Suite is relevant when an organization needs their additional specialty-device or advanced endpoint-management capabilities, not just standard power controls. Organizations already operating Active Directory may also use Group Policy; established Configuration Manager environments, provisioning workflows, or OEM tools can be appropriate for other management needs. For an organization already using Microsoft cloud device management, Intune is a direct way to distribute and monitor Windows power policy.
