The quickest way to take an iPhone screenshot depends on the buttons your model has:
- Face ID iPhones: Quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up button together.
- Home-button iPhones: Quickly press and release the Side button and Home button together.
- Top-button models: Quickly press and release the Top button and Home button together.
The image is saved in Photos. If pressing buttons is inconvenient, Siri, AssistiveTouch and Back Tap can take the screenshot instead.
Which button combination should you use?

Do not hold the buttons down. Holding the Side button with a volume button can open the power-off or emergency screen instead of capturing the display. A quick, simultaneous press is what matters.

On an iPhone without a physical Home button, press and immediately release the Side button and Volume Up button together. This is the standard method on current Face ID models.

Models with a Home button
Press and immediately release the Side button and Home button together. On older iPhones, the button on the top edge may replace the Side button; use Top + Home on those models.
What happens after you capture it?
The screenshot is stored automatically in Photos. On iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail normally appears in the lower-left corner. Apple’s UK support documentation says iOS 26 displays the screenshot automatically with quick tools, so the on-screen preview can differ by iOS version.
Tap the preview or open the image in Photos to edit it. You can crop, draw or highlight with Markup, add text, share it, or save the edited version.
How to find screenshots later
- Open Photos.
- Open Collections.
- Scroll to Media Types.
- Tap Screenshots.
Searching for “screenshots” in Photos is also useful when you have a large library. Screenshots remain separate from ordinary camera photos in the Screenshots media type.
Screenshot a full webpage or document
For a long Safari webpage, first take a normal screenshot. When the preview editor opens, tap Full Page if that control is available. A page-length view appears instead of only the currently visible area.

Save as an image or PDF
Use the save controls in the Full Page editor to keep the capture as an image or PDF. Full-page capture is intended for content such as an entire Safari webpage; the Full Page option will not appear for every app or screen.
If Full Page is missing
- Make sure you captured the content in Safari when you need a webpage.
- Look for the Full Page tab immediately after taking the screenshot, before dismissing the editor.
- Some apps provide their own export or print command instead of Apple’s full-page capture.
- For very long pages, use the page’s built-in share, print or download option if it offers one.
Take a screenshot without pressing physical buttons
Back Tap
Back Tap is available on iPhone 8 or later. It assigns an action to a double or triple tap on the back of the phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Touch.
- Tap Back Tap.
- Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
- Select Screenshot.
Return to the screen you want to capture and tap the back of the iPhone with the chosen pattern. A case, accidental taps or tapping away from the phone’s center can affect recognition, so choose the gesture that causes fewer false captures.
AssistiveTouch
AssistiveTouch puts an onscreen control over your apps. To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch, turn it on, then assign Screenshot to a single tap, double tap, long press or a menu item. Tap the floating control and use the assigned Screenshot action whenever you need it.
This method is useful when a hardware button is difficult to press or no longer works. You can move the AssistiveTouch control to an unobtrusive edge while using other apps.

Siri
Say “Hey Siri, take a screenshot,” or activate Siri with your configured button and ask for a screenshot. This is practical when your hands are occupied or when you want to avoid pressing the Side, Top or Home buttons.
Choosing the easiest method

Troubleshooting screenshot problems
Nothing happens
- Press and release rather than holding the buttons.
- Confirm you are using Volume Up, not Volume Down, on a Face ID model.
- On a Home-button iPhone, press Home and Side or Top together; pressing them one after the other may not work.
- Try Back Tap, AssistiveTouch or Siri to determine whether the issue is the buttons or the software.
The power-off or emergency screen appears
You probably held the Side button and a volume button too long. Cancel that screen and try a much shorter, simultaneous press.
The preview disappeared
The file is normally still saved. Open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. The preview behavior differs between iOS versions, including the change documented for iOS 26.
Back Tap triggers accidentally
Switch from Double Tap to Triple Tap in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, or assign a less frequently used action. A case can also change how firmly you need to tap.
Full Page is unavailable
Full Page is shown only when the app and content support it. In Safari, take the screenshot while the webpage is open and select Full Page in the editor immediately afterward. For unsupported apps, use the app’s export, print or save feature.

Privacy and sensitive information
A screenshot is an ordinary image file. Before sharing one, inspect the status bar, notifications, names, addresses, account numbers, QR codes and private messages. Use Markup to cover information, but remember that a simple drawn overlay may be removable in some workflows; crop out sensitive content when possible. Check the edited image before sending it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a screenshot while a video is playing?
Yes. Use the normal button shortcut or an accessibility method; the captured image shows the frame and interface visible at that moment. Apps may restrict screenshots of protected content.
Does taking a screenshot notify the other person?
The iPhone shortcut itself does not provide a general notification to another person. Individual apps can implement their own screenshot detection or privacy rules.

Can I change the hardware shortcut?
Apple’s standard button combinations are fixed. To use a different gesture, configure Back Tap or AssistiveTouch instead.
