The right choice depends less on the logo than on the actual sale price, included attachments, and whether its automation solves a problem you have.

Dyson Supersonic vs. Supersonic Nural: quick verdict

The standard Supersonic already has intelligent heat control, three airflow speeds, four heat settings, magnetic attachments, and the original Supersonic drying design. Nural adds sensors and software-like conveniences: Scalp protect mode, Attachment learning, and Pause detect. Dyson says both use the same basic Digital V9 motor platform.

That makes Nural a smart-control upgrade rather than a new performance category. Do not buy it expecting dramatically shorter drying times unless a controlled test of the exact models proves that result.

What is different?

Dyson launched the original Supersonic in 2016 and introduced Nural in 2024. The Nural retains the familiar Supersonic architecture, so the premium mainly buys automation and newer accessories.

Drying power: is Nural faster?

There is no sound basis for calling Nural automatically faster or more powerful. Dyson’s official Nural specifications list:

• 13.3 litres per second of airflow
• Three airflow speeds
• Four heat settings, including a cold-shot function
• 1.8-pound weight
• 8.6-foot cable
• 120V US electrical specification

The standard Supersonic line has appeared in multiple generations, bundles, and editions. Check the exact model number before comparing specifications. “Supersonic” can refer to a full package, an Origin-style reduced-attachment model, an older HD07 unit, or a professional variant.

Both dryers are designed around fast, concentrated airflow rather than a conventional heating element alone. Dyson says the original Digital V9 motor uses a 13-blade impeller reaching up to 110,000 rpm and producing 3.2kPa of air pressure. The standard model also monitors air temperature 40 times per second to help limit extreme heat.

Those figures describe the platform, not a guarantee of identical results for every head of hair. Drying time depends on hair length, density, porosity, starting moisture, attachment, technique, and settings.

Scalp protect mode is Nural’s biggest practical advantage

The standard Supersonic regulates the temperature of the air it produces. Nural adds a distance sensor that measures how close the dryer is to the scalp when Scalp protect mode is enabled.

1. Activate Scalp protect mode.
2. At a greater distance, the dryer uses higher heat.
3. As it approaches the head, it reduces heat and airflow.
4. Dyson specifies an approximate near-scalp target of 55°C (131°F).
5. The capsule illumination changes color as the temperature changes.

This may be useful if you dry close to the roots, have a heat-sensitive scalp, or want the dryer to manage one variable automatically. It can also change the feel of drying: reduced heat and airflow near the scalp may be more comfortable, but some users may find root drying slower.

Scalp protect mode is not a substitute for moving the dryer, avoiding prolonged exposure to one section, choosing sensible heat and speed settings, or using heat protectant where appropriate. Nural remains a hot-air styling tool, and hair can still become dry or damaged through excessive time, high heat, close positioning, repeated passes, chemical processing, or pre-existing fragility.

Dyson also makes claims about scalp-barrier strength, shine, flakes, shedding, and oil balance. Treat those as manufacturer claims, not as independent clinical conclusions. A dryer should not be considered treatment for a scalp condition.

Attachment learning: useful convenience, not essential technology

Nural can identify compatible intelligent attachments using a Hall-sensor-based identification system. It can then recall preferred heat and airflow settings for that attachment.

That is convenient when you alternate between a concentrator, diffuser, comb, and other tools. You spend less time adjusting controls every time you change accessories. It is less valuable if you use one attachment at one setting, or if you prefer to control every adjustment yourself.

Remembered settings are not automatically perfect for every user or every hair condition. Fine, bleached, fragile, very dense, and highly textured hair may need different choices from the saved preset. Use the controls as a starting point rather than allowing a preset to override your judgment.

Important compatibility warning

An older Supersonic attachment may physically fit Nural without supporting Attachment learning. Physical compatibility and smart-feature compatibility are different things. Confirm the exact attachment and model compatibility before assuming an existing accessory will trigger a preset.

Dyson’s Nural user guide is the appropriate reference for the current attachment-feature behavior.

Pause detect is helpful, but not a performance upgrade

Pause detect uses motion sensing to recognize when Nural has been set down. It then reduces airflow and turns off or reduces heating intensity depending on the operating state and attachment.

This can help while sectioning hair, changing tools, or reaching for a brush. It is a workflow convenience, not a reason to expect better styling results. Some users may dislike automatic changes if they pause with the dryer in an unusual position or prefer continuous low airflow. The feature can generally be managed through the dryer’s controls; check the current US manual for the precise behavior of your model.

Attachments matter more than the name on the box

There is no single standard Supersonic package. Dyson sells different colors, editions, retailer bundles, and attachment combinations. A cheaper three-attachment Supersonic may be better value than a more expensive five-attachment package if you only need a concentrator. The opposite is true if you need a diffuser, comb, or flyaway tool.

Verify the exact retailer SKU, model number, attachment count, and stock condition. Do not write or shop from a generic assumption that every “Supersonic” includes five attachments.

Which dryer suits your hair?

Fine, fragile, bleached, or heat-sensitive hair

Nural has the stronger case if automated distance-based heat reduction is important to you. However, it does not eliminate the need for lower settings, movement, sensible exposure time, and appropriate hair care. The standard Supersonic can still be suitable when used carefully.

Thick or coarse hair

Either model’s high-velocity airflow may be useful. Nural may feel more comfortable close to the scalp in Scalp protect mode, but its automatic reduction in heat and airflow can make root drying feel less aggressive or slower.

Curly, coily, or textured hair

The diffuser included in the package matters more than the Nural branding. The Wave+Curl diffuser may be a meaningful advantage if you want its Dome and Diffuse modes. A discounted standard Supersonic remains attractive if it includes a suitable diffuser or comb attachment.

Straight or wavy hair

The standard Supersonic is likely the better value if you mainly use a concentrator or smoothing attachment and do not need automated scalp sensing.

Sensitive scalp

Nural’s primary differentiator directly addresses this use case. Still, scalp sensitivity can have many causes, including heat, airflow, products, or dermatological conditions. The dryer is not a treatment.

Price and value: compare the real gap

Official Dyson US pages showed inconsistent prices and stock status across colors, bundles, and promotions. Prices observed on August 18, 2026 included:

• A three-attachment standard Supersonic at $279.99, reduced from $399.99, with the captured listing marked out of stock.
• A promotional Nural listing at $379.99.
• A standard Nural listing at $449.99.
• Another Dyson promotion showing Nural at $349.99 for a particular color or offer.

These are date-stamped observations, not a universal current price. Availability, color, bundle contents, and retailer status can change. Compare the exact products rather than comparing a discounted three-attachment Supersonic with a full-price Nural bundle.

A practical editorial rule is:

• Under about $50 more: Nural’s automation and newer diffuser may justify choosing it.
• About $100–$150 more: choose Nural mainly if you have a clear scalp-comfort need, switch attachments often, or specifically want the Wave+Curl diffuser.
• More than $150 more: the standard Supersonic is usually the stronger value unless Nural’s sensor features directly solve your problem.

These thresholds are decision aids, not laboratory-derived results. Recalculate the gap when you buy.

Should an existing Supersonic owner upgrade?

Usually, no—not automatically. An existing owner already has the core high-velocity drying system and intelligent heat control. Nural’s meaningful gains are the sensor features, setting memory, pause behavior, and newer diffuser.

Upgrade when you regularly dry close to the scalp and want automated heat reduction, frequently switch intelligent attachments, pause repeatedly while styling, or want the Wave+Curl diffuser and cannot obtain an equivalent accessory more cheaply.

If you use one attachment and one manual setting, buying a missing or preferred attachment may deliver more value than replacing the dryer.

What to check before buying

1. Exact model number: identify whether it is an HD07 Supersonic, Nural, Origin-style package, or professional model.
2. Attachment count: confirm every included accessory rather than relying on product-family names.
3. Smart compatibility: verify that existing attachments support Nural’s Attachment learning.
4. Actual price: record the color, bundle, retailer, promotion, and date checked.
5. Seller status: marketplace listings may differ in authenticity, condition, missing accessories, warranty eligibility, and return terms.
6. Electrical specification: the researched Nural specification is 120V for the US; do not assume international voltage compatibility.

Dyson’s US product page lists free shipping on orders over $50, a two-year limited warranty, and a 30-day return or money-back policy, subject to current terms and seller eligibility. Verify the terms at checkout, particularly with third-party marketplace sellers.

Alternatives worth considering

If you only need basic drying, either Dyson may be excessive. The Shark SpeedStyle is a more value-oriented high-speed styling system. The Shark FlexStyle is a better fit if you want a dryer/styler system with curling and styling attachments.

Laifen, T3, and BaBylissPRO offer alternatives for buyers prioritizing price, conventional controls, ergonomics, or professional-style airflow. Verify current prices, warranty terms, and attachment ecosystems before comparing them with Dyson.

Professional stylists should separately evaluate Dyson’s Supersonic r Professional and other salon-focused dryers. It is not automatically the best choice for home users.

Final recommendation

Buy the standard Supersonic when it is substantially cheaper, you prefer manual control, you use one or two conventional attachments, or you already own compatible accessories.

Buy the Supersonic Nural when scalp comfort and automated heat reduction are priorities, you frequently change attachments, you value Pause detect, or the package includes the Wave+Curl diffuser you actually want. It becomes easier to recommend when a promotion brings it within roughly $50–$75 of a comparable Supersonic bundle.

Nural is the more feature-rich dryer, but the standard Supersonic remains the better value for most buyers who simply want Dyson’s core drying platform.
