Dropbox can suit people who want files synced across devices and simple sharing, but whether it is worth paying for depends on how much storage, recovery time, and team control you need. Its plans range from 2 GB free to paid individual, family, and business options; importantly, cloud sync and storage are not the same as an independent backup.
Dropbox plans and prices in 2026
Dropbox’s plans page lists the following options. Prices are the amounts displayed on that page; billing-cycle selection is available, and your country, taxes, and checkout terms may change the amount charged. Confirm the total and billing period before subscribing. Dropbox plans.
| Plan | Listed price | Storage | Users | Recovery period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free | 2 GB | One user | Not stated on the plans page |
| Plus | $9.99/month | 2 TB | One user | 30 days |
| Family | $16.99/month | 2 TB | Up to six users | Not stated on the plans page |
| Standard | $15/user/month | Starts with 3 TB for a team on the updated plan | Team; per-user pricing | 180 days |
| Advanced | $24/user/month | Starts with 15 TB for a team | Team; per-user pricing | One year |
These are page-listed prices, not a guarantee of the same recurring charge in every market or billing arrangement. The plan comparison also lists maximum transfer size and sharing controls; check the current plan page for the exact limits and features available to your account rather than assuming they are identical across tiers.
Which plan fits?
- Basic: A no-cost way to try Dropbox or keep a small set of files online. Its 2 GB allowance is limited for large photo or video collections.
- Plus: The individual option to consider if 2 TB and 30-day recovery meet your needs.
- Family: A shared option for up to six users with 2 TB listed. Confirm how the shared storage is allocated for your intended use.
- Standard: A team plan with a 180-day recovery window. Confirm whether your organization is offered the updated plan or an older version.
- Advanced: The higher-tier team plan, with a one-year recovery period and additional administrative and security features including end-to-end encryption, advanced key management, compliance tracking, and single sign-on, as listed by Dropbox.
Important note for Standard customers
Dropbox Help says most customers who purchased Standard before June 30, 2026 are on “Dropbox Standard Classic.” The updated Standard plan provides 3 TB for its first member and 1 TB per additional actively used license, with a maximum purchasable storage amount of 1,000 TB. Dropbox says the updated plan is unavailable in Brazil and Japan. Existing customers should check their account’s plan details instead of assuming the current new-plan comparison describes their subscription. Dropbox Standard Classic plan details.

What Dropbox storage and sync do
Dropbox provides an online place to save and organize files such as documents, photos, and videos. On desktop, files placed in the Dropbox folder sync with connected devices. That makes Dropbox useful when you want the same working files available on more than one device or want to share them with other people. Dropbox cloud storage.
Manage local disk space
Online-only files remain accessible through Dropbox without taking up the same local drive space as downloaded files. Selective sync lets you choose which Dropbox folders sync to a particular computer. These options can help when your laptop has limited storage, but they make the distinction between online access and an offline local copy important: files not stored locally may not be available without an internet connection. Check the setting for a folder before relying on it during travel or an outage. Dropbox sync overview.

Sharing files with people outside Dropbox
Dropbox lets users create links that recipients can open without having Dropbox accounts. Available link protections include passwords and expiration dates, while shared-folder permissions can control access. The precise controls depend on the plan, so verify that the tier you choose supports the permissions and safeguards your work requires. Dropbox describes these options on its file-sharing page; the plan comparison shows plan-level differences.
Dropbox storage and sync are not the same as backup
Cloud storage is for saving files online, organizing them, syncing across devices, and collaborating. Dropbox Backup is intended to keep copies of computer files accessible through Dropbox. Dropbox Help puts it this way: “Cloud backup makes secure, up-to-date copies of files on your computer that you can access from anywhere you use Dropbox.” The Backup offering can automatically back up one computer and one external drive. Dropbox says backup does not free computer disk space or provide additional local storage. Dropbox Backup FAQs (updated September 14, 2026).

Do not treat a synced Dropbox folder as a complete, independent backup by default. Sync is designed to keep files aligned across devices; a change or deletion may also propagate. If you need a separate recovery copy, consider a backup approach in addition to storage and sync. A local external drive is one possible complement, and Dropbox Backup supports one external drive; it is optional, not a requirement for using Dropbox.
Security: useful features, with plan-level limits
Dropbox’s plan comparison lists 256-bit AES encryption and SSL/TLS among core features. It identifies end-to-end encryption and Advanced Key Management with Advanced, rather than presenting those capabilities as universal across all plans. Sharing protections such as passwords, expirations, and permissions also depend on the plan. Match the exact controls to the subscription you are considering; the provider’s feature descriptions are not an independent security audit. Dropbox plan comparison.

The plans page also reports “95% faster end-to-end sync across devices” on 25 MB files, based on a 2023 Principled Technologies study sponsored by Dropbox. This is a Dropbox-reported, sponsored study result with a specific file-size scope, not a general promise of sync speed for every file or network.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Dropbox worth paying for?
Dropbox is most compelling if you need cross-device file sync, online-only storage options, and links for sharing with people who do not use Dropbox. Basic may be enough for a small collection; Plus or Family adds substantially more listed capacity, while team plans add longer recovery periods and administrative capabilities. The trade-offs are that paid-plan value depends on your actual storage and collaboration needs, features differ by tier, and online storage alone should not be mistaken for a separate backup strategy.
Before choosing, compare the listed storage and price against the number of users, recovery window, sharing controls, and security administration you actually need. For businesses, verify whether Standard Classic or the updated Standard applies to your account and region.
