Configuration Manager (still commonly called SCCM) content validation checks whether files on a distribution point (DP) match the expected content. It detects and reports integrity problems; it does not repair them. To replace a damaged or incomplete DP copy, redistribute the content, then validate it again.
This guide covers the DP options, scheduled and manual validation, PowerShell, results, and the right recovery action for common failures.
What DP content validation checks
Validation checks content already stored on a DP against its expected content information. Configuration Manager can report an unexpected file hash, which may point to a file that was altered or deleted, an incomplete transfer, storage trouble, or a content-library inconsistency. It is useful when clients report hash mismatches or deployments fail after previously working.
Validation is a detection and reporting operation—not a full content-library repair, a client troubleshooting tool, or a check of every part of the deployment path. It does not verify boundary-group selection, client location choice, network performance, or whether the source files are correct. Microsoft describes the feature in its content-management documentation.

Where the Content Validation options are
For an existing DP, open the Configuration Manager console and go to Administration > Distribution Points. Select the DP, choose Properties, and open Content Validation. The same page is available when adding a DP in the Create Site System Server Wizard.
On this tab, you can enable recurring validation, set its schedule, and choose the content-monitoring priority. See Microsoft’s current distribution point configuration guidance for the DP settings.
Enable scheduled validation and choose a time
- Open Administration > Distribution Points.
- Right-click the target DP and select Properties.
- Open Content Validation.
- Select Enable content validation on a schedule.
- Set a quiet maintenance window and choose a priority.
- Save the changes, then verify the displayed schedule and later confirm the run in status or logs.
Time-zone warning: The schedule is specified using the computer’s local time, but the console displays it in UTC. Convert your intended maintenance time to the console’s displayed time; the correct offset depends on the relevant time zone and daylight-saving status. Recheck after saving and account for daylight-saving changes in long-running schedules.

It can take time and use disk and processor resources, particularly with a large content library. Schedule it away from busy deployment periods and, where possible, backups and intensive security scans. Stagger runs across DPs rather than starting them all together. There is no universally correct interval: choose one based on content volume, risk, and observed impact.

Choose a validation priority
Documented priority values are Lowest, Low, Medium, High, and Highest; the default is Lowest. Priority is a resource trade-off, not an accuracy setting. Microsoft warns that a higher content-monitoring priority can increase processor and disk utilization; it may complete sooner, but no fixed duration or performance result is guaranteed.

These are starting points, not guarantees. Content volume, disk performance, concurrent work, CPU capacity, and security software all affect the practical choice.
Run validation manually
Use the DP properties workflow when you want to validate one or more content entries hosted by a particular DP:
- Go to Administration > Distribution Points, select the DP, and open Properties.
- Choose the Content tab.
- Select the content item or items to check, choose Validate, and confirm with OK.
This is not the same as selecting one package and validating every item in the hierarchy. Select the entries you intend to check. For a recurring pass, configure the schedule on the Content Validation tab.

To validate a particular object at a selected DP or distribution point group, open the relevant object in Software Library, open its Properties, and choose Content Locations. Select the target DP or group, choose Validate, and confirm. This approach is useful for applications and deployment types, packages, software update packages, operating-system and boot images, driver packages, and other supported content. Exact controls can vary by content type and Configuration Manager build.
Validate with PowerShell
The Configuration Manager cmdlet is Invoke-CMContentValidation. Run it from the Configuration Manager site drive (for example, PS XYZ:>) with the Configuration Manager PowerShell module loaded. Check the installed module’s parameter sets because available targeting options can vary by version.

Use -DisableContentDependencyDetection only when you intentionally want to exclude dependent application content. Check validation results
Review results in Monitoring > Distribution Status > Content Status. Refresh the console and inspect the relevant content and DP. Distinguish a successful validation from a mismatch or failure, a request that is still pending, and content that is being redistributed; a request may not start or finish immediately.
For DP troubleshooting, Microsoft lists distmgr.log and SMSdpmon.log as useful logs. Check the relevant log on the computer where that role’s log is located, and use Microsoft’s Configuration Manager log reference to confirm role-specific locations. Do not assume a single log path applies to every server or event.
What to do when validation fails
- Identify the scope. Record the affected content and DP. Check whether the same content fails on other DPs.
- Check for an intentional source change. If the source files were deliberately changed, update the distribution points using the appropriate content-update action rather than treating the difference as unexpected corruption.
- Redistribute a damaged DP copy. Select the content and use Redistribute for the affected DP. Redistribution copies the content files again and overwrites the existing files there.
- Wait for distribution to complete. Confirm the content status before proceeding.
- Validate again. A successful recheck helps confirm that the DP copy now matches expected content.
- Investigate repeat failures. Check free disk space, permissions, DP and IIS health, network transfer, security-software interference, and the relevant distribution logs. For a pull DP, also check retrieval from its source DP.
Avoid deleting or editing content-library folders manually. Such changes can create more inconsistencies and make diagnosis harder. Use supported console actions first.

Validation, redistribution, update, removal, and cleanup are different

Microsoft documents these as distinct content-management operations. In short: validate to detect, redistribute to replace a bad DP copy, and update when the source content has intentionally changed.
Common problems and edge cases
The schedule seems to run at the wrong time
First check the local-time versus UTC display behavior and the relevant time-zone and daylight-saving settings. Verify the actual run in logs rather than relying only on the console schedule.
One client reports a content error, but DP validation is healthy
A healthy server-side check does not prove that every client download path is healthy. Check which DP the client selected, its boundary-group configuration, client content-location logs, cache and download state, and whether the issue reproduces on another client. Validate the DP copy separately before concluding that it is corrupt.

Do not keep repeating redistribution without investigating. Check storage capacity and health, permissions, IIS and DP health, antivirus or endpoint-security interference, network connectivity, and whether the source content itself is valid. Review the applicable distribution logs; a pull DP may be unable to retrieve the content from its source DP.
The DP is in maintenance mode
Maintenance mode does not necessarily stop every scheduled task: Microsoft notes that tasks such as content validation can still run. Plan the schedule accordingly.

- Start with Lowest or Low priority, then adjust based on measured impact.
- Use a quiet window and stagger large DP estates.
- Keep a manual validation path for investigating a particular content item or DP.
- After a mismatch, determine whether the source changed; update if it did, otherwise redistribute the affected DP copy and validate again.
- Do not use validation as a substitute for client, network, boundary-group, or content-library troubleshooting.
