Microsoft does not appear to publish the exact Windows 11 taskbar Start and Search symbols as a general-purpose PNG, SVG, or ICO download. For reusable Windows-style artwork, use Microsoft’s Fluent UI System Icons. Choose a generic Fluent search or launcher icon rather than presenting it as the exact Windows taskbar asset, and review Microsoft’s Windows trademark guidance before redistributing or commercially using the Windows logo.
What you are actually looking for
Several different assets are commonly described as a “Windows 11 Start icon” or “Search button icon”:
- Start button: the Windows symbol displayed on the taskbar to open the Start menu.
- Search control: the taskbar search box or magnifying-glass control used to find apps, files, and settings. Search can also be opened with Windows logo key + S.
- Generic Start-style icon: a home, grid, apps, or launcher symbol from an icon library.
- Application icon: an app’s own icon displayed in Start, Search results, the taskbar, or an all-apps list.
- Screenshot or recreation: a visual reference that is not necessarily a reusable standalone asset.
Microsoft’s taskbar documentation describes Start and Search as Windows taskbar controls. Its app-icon documentation, by contrast, explains how developers supply icons for their own applications—not how to download the operating system’s Start and Search controls.
Are the official Windows 11 Start and Search icons available?
No general-purpose standalone download was found in the current official documentation for the exact Windows 11 taskbar symbols. Microsoft provides product documentation, design guidance, and trademark rules, but that is not the same as publishing a ZIP containing the current Start and Search artwork.

The exact appearance can also change with Windows updates, settings, display scaling, theme, policy, and taskbar configuration. Search may appear as a box, an icon with a label, an icon only, or be hidden. For a screenshot, identify the Windows version or build when the precise appearance matters.
Best reusable alternative: Fluent UI System Icons
Microsoft’s open-source Fluent UI System Icons repository is the safest starting point for a Windows-style replacement. It contains generic Fluent icons, including search, home, apps, and grid symbols. These are Microsoft-maintained design-system assets, but they are not necessarily the exact icons used by the Windows 11 taskbar.
For SVG files, use the SVG icon package. Names follow a pattern such as search_16_regular, search_20_regular, and search_24_regular. The repository includes regular and filled styles and lists sizes such as 16, 20, 24, 28, and 48 pixels, although every icon is not available in every combination.

Useful repository searches include search, home, apps, and grid. Use a search icon for a Search control. For a Start-like control, choose a launcher, home, grid, or apps symbol rather than calling it the Windows logo.
The Fluent repository is released under the MIT License. When redistributing an asset, retain the applicable copyright and license notice.
Download and use SVG, PNG, or ICO files
SVG: best for websites and design work
SVG is the preferred format for websites, mockups, vector editing, and high-DPI displays. It scales cleanly, can be recolored, and avoids the blur common with enlarged raster images. Open the chosen asset in the Fluent repository and download its raw SVG, or install the package in a project:

PNG: best for articles and presentations
Export the SVG to PNG when your blog, presentation software, screenshot editor, or other application does not accept SVG. Export several sizes instead of enlarging one small bitmap. Transparent backgrounds generally work better on both light and dark designs.
ICO: best for Windows shortcuts
Use ICO when a Windows shortcut, desktop customization tool, or icon editor specifically requires it. Start with a sufficiently large SVG or PNG, export multiple resolutions, and package them into a multi-resolution ICO using a reputable icon editor or converter.

Do not rename a PNG to .ico. That changes the filename, not the file format, and can cause Windows or customization software to reject it. Test the resulting ICO at normal and high-DPI scaling.
Font glyphs: mainly for software interfaces
Fluent also provides icon fonts and codepoint metadata, including the Regular font codepoint file. Fonts can be useful in an application that already embeds or loads an icon font, but they are less convenient than SVG or PNG for ordinary downloads and graphics.

- Download a suitable Fluent SVG or create an original launcher/search design.
- Export the artwork to several bitmap sizes, rather than starting with one tiny image.
- Use an icon editor or converter that creates a genuine multi-resolution ICO.
- Assign the ICO to the shortcut or application through the relevant Windows interface.
- Check the result in Explorer, on the desktop, and at the display scaling used by the target computer.
A shortcut icon is different from the Windows taskbar’s built-in Start control. Replacing a shortcut icon does not replace the operating system’s Start button.

Can you use the Windows logo?
Download availability and permission to use the Windows symbol are separate issues. Microsoft’s February 2026 Windows trademark guidance distinguishes the adapted in-product Windows symbol used as the Start button from broader uses of the Windows mark.
The guidance allows context-specific use when directly referring to the Start button in Windows-related tutorial or keyboard-shortcut content, but the in-product Start-button treatment is intended for Windows itself and should not casually be turned into a downloadable logo pack. Avoid modifying the symbol into a product logo, suggesting Microsoft endorsement, or using it as the main commercial brand without appropriate legal review.
For a blog explanation, a properly credited screenshot may be more accurate than a redrawn logo. For a website or application interface, an original Fluent-style launcher or search symbol is usually the safer choice.

Why your replacement may not match Windows exactly
- Windows builds can change taskbar placement and Search presentation.
- Light and dark themes may use different visual treatments.
- Display scaling changes how raster images are rendered.
- Anti-aliasing, padding, stroke weight, and color can differ between a Fluent substitute and the Windows product UI.
- Some customization tools require a particular file format or Windows build.
- Updates may undo, ignore, or break taskbar modifications.
- The Start logo may be rendered or controlled by Windows rather than loaded as an ordinary editable image.
Microsoft’s Search customization guidance and recent Windows Insider taskbar announcements illustrate why a screenshot or extracted asset should be labeled by version when exact appearance matters.
Bottom line
For the exact Windows 11 taskbar Start and Search symbols, do not assume that a random PNG or SVG download is official. Microsoft’s current public documentation does not clearly provide a general-purpose standalone pack. Use a Microsoft Fluent UI System Icons search or launcher asset for reusable designs, export it to PNG when necessary, create a genuine multi-resolution ICO for shortcuts, and treat the Windows logo as a trademarked product symbol rather than a generic icon-library download.
