Download the Windows 11 Insider Preview ISO from Microsoft’s Windows Insider Preview Downloads page. You must be signed in with a Microsoft account enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. An Insider ISO installs pre-release software; mounting it and running setup.exe can preserve your apps and files, while choosing Nothing performs a clean installation that erases them.
Download the official Windows 11 Insider ISO
- Open Microsoft’s Windows Insider Preview Downloads page. The official shortcut is aka.ms/WIPISO.
- Sign in using a Microsoft account enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft requires Insider membership to access the downloads; existing members can sign in from the page.
- Select an available preview ISO, choose the appropriate language and architecture where offered, and save the file locally.
Check the address bar before downloading: the page should be on microsoft.com or Microsoft’s aka.ms shortcut. Avoid third-party ISO mirrors; an unofficial image may be altered or may not match the build Microsoft distributes. Insider availability and build numbers change, so use the live page rather than relying on a build number in an old guide.
Downloading an ISO is separate from enrolling a running PC for flights through Windows Update. To check or configure the device’s enrollment, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
Choose a channel that matches your risk tolerance
Microsoft describes the channels as different preview paths, not interchangeable labels. Names and availability can change as the program evolves; some devices may continue to show older names during rollouts. Review Microsoft’s current Windows Insider flighting guidance before choosing.

Preview features can be staged, changed, removed, incompletely localized, or never released publicly. Microsoft’s guidance also notes that some development paths do not align with a retail Windows version, which affects whether you can switch or leave without reinstalling.
Check the target PC before installing
- Match the architecture. Use an x64 ISO for compatible x64 hardware and an Arm64 ISO for an Arm-based PC. Do not assume an x64 image will install on Arm hardware.
- Check Windows 11 requirements. Review Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements, including processor, memory, storage, TPM, and firmware requirements. Microsoft warns that installing on unsupported hardware can cause compatibility problems, affect support eligibility, and leave update entitlement uncertain.
- Back up before setup. Save important files and make sure you can access application installers, license information, and authentication or recovery details. For a clean install, verify that the backup opens before erasing the PC.
- Plan for recovery. If the target is your only working computer, prepare recovery media before beginning. Preview builds can cause driver, application, or system problems.
- Consider whether a preview belongs on this PC. An Insider build is a poor fit for a machine that must remain dependable for everyday work or where downtime is unacceptable. A virtual machine can isolate testing, although it still needs adequate host memory, CPU capacity, and storage; hardware-dependent features may behave differently, and licensing terms still apply.
Microsoft’s public download page currently identifies the public release as Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2; that is distinct from an Insider Preview ISO. See the standard Windows 11 download page if you want public-release media instead.
Install from the ISO without a USB drive
Use this in-place route when Windows still starts and you want to keep the existing installation. Back up important files first, even when choosing the keep-everything option.

- In File Explorer, locate the downloaded
.isofile. - Right-click the ISO and select Mount.
- Open the virtual DVD drive that appears in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - When prompted about what to keep, select Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps for the in-place upgrade.
- Complete Windows Setup and allow the PC to restart as needed.
- After installation, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and confirm that the intended account and channel are selected.
Mounting an ISO and running Setup from the current Windows session is not the same as booting into a clean installation. If Setup does not offer the keep-everything choice, stop and check the edition, language, architecture, and build compatibility rather than selecting an option that could remove data unexpectedly.
Create bootable USB media
Creating the media erases the USB drive. Copy anything important off it before starting. Microsoft’s Insider ISO instructions call for a USB drive of at least 8 GB.

- Open the Windows Recovery Drive application.
- Uncheck Back up system files to the recovery drive, then create the bootable USB.
- After the recovery-drive process finishes, mount the Insider ISO in File Explorer.
- Copy the contents of the mounted ISO to the USB drive.
- Eject the mounted ISO when the copy is complete.
- To install from the USB, connect it to the target PC and restart. Use the manufacturer’s boot menu or firmware settings to select the USB if the PC does not start from it automatically.
Common boot-menu keys include F2, F12, Delete, and Esc, but the correct key depends on the manufacturer and model. If the USB is not listed, check the device’s boot-order instructions and firmware settings; a boot problem does not necessarily mean the ISO copy is bad. Secure Boot behavior and other UEFI options are also manufacturer-dependent.
Perform a clean installation
A clean installation can remove the target Windows installation’s personal files, apps, settings, and recovery options. Do not proceed until you have a verified backup and the recovery media you need.
- Back up personal files and verify the backup. Gather application installers, license details, and account recovery information.
- Prepare a bootable USB using the steps above, or mount the ISO if you are starting Setup from a working Windows installation.
- Start Windows Setup. If booting from USB, restart the PC and select the USB from its boot menu or firmware boot order.
- When asked what to keep, select Change what to keep, then select Nothing.
- Confirm the choice only when you are ready to erase the existing installation, then complete setup.
- Reconnect to Windows Update and open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program to configure the intended Insider account and channel.
Microsoft documents the mounted-ISO and clean-install paths in its Insider ISO installation instructions. Afterward, check Windows Update, confirm the PC is receiving the expected flights, and test essential drivers, applications, and activation status.
Leaving Insider builds: when Windows Update is not enough
Whether you can move to another channel or return to a public build depends on the development path and Windows core version. Microsoft says that moving among Experimental, Beta, and Release Preview can generally be done through an in-place upgrade when the channels are on the same Windows core version. That is not a universal downgrade promise.
Leaving Experimental (Future Platforms) requires a clean installation because that path does not align with a retail Windows build. Some cross-core changes also require a clean reinstall; Microsoft specifically says that moving from Windows 11 version 26H1 to the 25H2/26H2 build path requires one. Check the current channel and flighting guidance for the path on your device before switching.

Do not postpone recovery planning if a flight has become old. Microsoft warns that outdated Insider builds can stop receiving updates when flight certificates expire, potentially leaving the device on an unsupported build and requiring a clean installation to return to a supported one.
Troubleshoot common download and installation problems
The Insider ISO page will not show downloads
Confirm that you are signed in with the Microsoft account enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. Download access requires membership; the ability to download an ISO does not by itself enroll a separate PC for Windows Update flights.
The ISO will not mount or Setup will not keep apps
Make sure the file finished downloading and that you are running Setup from a Windows session by opening the mounted drive and launching setup.exe. If the keep-apps option is missing, check that the ISO matches the installed Windows architecture, language, edition, and compatible build path. Microsoft’s standard Windows 11 media guidance says the installation language must match the current Windows language for that workflow. Do not proceed with an option that removes content unless that is intended.
The USB does not boot
First confirm that the media copy completed and that the target PC is attempting to boot from the USB. Use the model-specific boot menu or UEFI boot-order instructions. Firmware settings, Secure Boot behavior, and boot controls vary; consult the PC maker’s guidance rather than changing settings blindly.
The build is unstable, drivers fail, or Windows no longer boots
- If Windows still starts, back up data and try the mounted-ISO in-place route when preserving the installation is appropriate.
- If Windows starts but remains seriously unstable, a clean installation may be necessary after the backup is verified.
- If Windows will not start, boot from prepared USB media and reinstall. If the device is on Future Platforms or an incompatible development core, expect that a clean installation may be required.
- If the build is too old to receive flights, reinstalling may be needed to return to a supported build.
Windows cannot install on the PC
Check the architecture and Windows 11 system requirements before retrying. Microsoft warns that unsupported hardware can have compatibility and support consequences and may not be entitled to updates. The ISO is not a workaround for every hardware requirement.
Insider ISO or public Windows 11 ISO?

The public download page provides SHA-256 verification instructions and hashes for its public ISO downloads. You can calculate a downloaded file’s hash in PowerShell with Get-FileHash C:Usersuser1DownloadsWindows11.iso, then compare it with Microsoft’s published value for the matching public ISO and language. Do not use a public ISO hash to verify an Insider ISO unless Microsoft publishes a matching hash for that exact Insider file.
