Microsoft’s companion app is now listed as Microsoft Surface or the Surface app; “Surface Audio” is the older name still found on Microsoft’s Download Center. Use the official store for your device, check that Microsoft is the publisher, then pair your headphones or earbuds in Bluetooth settings before opening the app.

Microsoft’s current listings use the Microsoft Surface name, while its older Download Center page calls the utility Surface Audio. Avoid third-party APK sites and unofficial download portals. Microsoft’s setup guidance describes the app for Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS, but the Microsoft Store listing for your PC is the final check for current Windows eligibility: Microsoft’s Surface Headphones setup guide.
Which devices does the app manage?
The app is for supported Microsoft audio accessories, including Surface Headphones, Surface Headphones 2, Surface Headphones 2+, and Surface Earbuds. It is not a universal headset manager: other Bluetooth headphones may play audio normally, but their manufacturer’s app or controls are needed for device-specific settings. Install and set up the app
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Microsoft Store and search for Surface or Microsoft Surface. Select Microsoft’s listing and choose Get or Install.
- Open Start and search for Surface to launch the app.
- Pair the accessory in Windows Bluetooth settings before selecting it in the app. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth. On Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
- Choose the Surface headphones or earbuds in the available-device list and complete pairing, then return to the Surface app and select the device.
Microsoft’s support material still describes setup on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In addition, Microsoft’s newer Surface app package information specifies Windows 11 version 22631 or higher for x64 or Arm64 PCs. If the Store says your Windows 10 PC is incompatible, do not use an unofficial installer; check the Store’s live compatibility details and consider moving to a supported Windows version. Android
- Install Microsoft Surface from Google Play and verify Microsoft Corporation is the publisher.
- Pair the headphones or earbuds in Android’s Bluetooth settings.
- Open the app. If the accessory is not listed, choose Account > Add a new Surface device.
If Google Play is unavailable in your region, Microsoft provides an Android package through its Download Center. It must be updated manually by returning to that page and installing newer packages. The page’s Android 4.4-or-later requirement applies to that legacy package, not necessarily to the current Google Play app; use Play’s live compatibility information for present-day requirements.
iPhone and iPad
- Install Microsoft Surface from the App Store and confirm Microsoft Corporation is the seller.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and pair the headphones or earbuds.
- Open the Surface app. If needed, select Account > Add a new Surface device.
The indexed U.S. App Store listing identifies compatibility with iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 11.0 or later; Apple’s live listing is authoritative for current compatibility and regional availability: Microsoft Surface in the App Store.

Pairing happens separately from installing
Installing the app does not itself connect the accessory. Charge and turn it on, put it into Bluetooth pairing mode, pair it through the operating system, and then open the Surface app. On first setup, the headphones may enter pairing mode automatically; otherwise, hold the power button for about five seconds, until the pairing prompt is heard and the LED flashes white. Exact prompts can vary by product. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover the process.

What you can do in the Surface app
- Check battery level and device information.
- Install firmware updates for supported Surface headphones and earbuds.
- Adjust equalizer and other personalization settings.
- Manage connected devices and language settings.
- Reset supported accessories, view tutorials, or access support and feedback options.

Firmware update timing and precautions
Microsoft estimates that a Surface Earbuds update can take about 15 minutes on Android and about an hour on iOS; these are approximate durations, not guarantees. Surface Headphones can be updated through the Surface app on iOS or Android. For Surface USB Link, Microsoft says updates are delivered through Windows Update on Windows 10/11.
- Charge the accessory before starting and keep Bluetooth enabled.
- Leave the app open and do not remove the accessory from Bluetooth while the update is installing.
- If progress appears stalled, allow for the approximate time Microsoft gives for that platform before restarting or trying again.
Fix a Surface device that does not appear in the app
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone or PC, then toggle Bluetooth off and back on.
- Turn the headphones or earbuds off and on, then put them into pairing mode again.
- Try pairing from the operating system’s Bluetooth settings first. If an old pairing is listed, remove or forget it, then pair again.
- Restart the phone or PC and retry.
- Try pairing the accessory with another supported device to help determine whether the issue is with the original device or the accessory.
- If it still cannot be set up, follow Microsoft’s product-specific factory-reset guidance in its Surface Headphones setup troubleshooting guide.
To remove an old pairing, use the menu for your platform: Windows 10: Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, select the headphones, then Remove device > Yes; iOS: Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information icon beside the device, then Forget This Device; Android: open Bluetooth settings, tap the gear beside the headphones, then choose Unpair.

When another device is already connected
Surface Headphones can be paired with up to eight devices but connected to only two at once. If the wrong device is active, disconnect one of the existing connections rather than reinstalling the app. In the Surface app, Windows users can open Surface > Surface Headphones > Device information; Android and iOS users can open Account > Surface Headphones > Device information, then use the toggle beside the device to disconnect it. Mac users and basic Bluetooth playback
Microsoft does not offer the Surface app for macOS. Surface Headphones can still connect to a Mac over Bluetooth, and Microsoft documents USB Link use with certain models, but app-based customization and updates may require Windows, Android, or iOS. If you only need ordinary audio playback, Bluetooth pairing may be enough; the app is for supported Surface-device management, not a requirement for all Bluetooth audio.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download Surface Audio without Google Play?
Yes. Microsoft’s Download Center offers a legacy Android package at this page. It does not update automatically, so use Google Play when available.
Why does the app say my Windows 10 PC is incompatible?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and Microsoft’s newer Surface app package information specifies Windows 11 version 22631 or higher. Check the live Microsoft Store listing for your PC’s eligibility; avoid unofficial installers.
Is there a Surface app for Mac?
No. Microsoft says the Surface app is unavailable for macOS. Supported headphones can still connect to a Mac over Bluetooth, but that does not provide the app’s management features.
