You can use the six static macOS Sonoma wallpapers as ordinary image files without installing Sonoma. The JPEGs are available from a third-party archive that describes them as sourced from Apple’s original software releases; it is not an Apple download site and is not affiliated with Apple. Sonoma’s animated landscape screen savers are a separate built-in feature.

The collection linked below lists six macOS 14 Sonoma wallpapers as JPEG files. Choose an image to open its individual download control:

- Sonoma Radial Green — JPEG
- Sonoma Radial Purple — JPEG
- Sonoma Radial Yellow — JPEG
About the source: AppleWalls says these files come from Apple’s original software releases, but also states that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple. These are third-party-hosted downloads, not files served from Apple’s website. The collection lists file sizes of about 3.4–6 MB; check the individual page for its current details. A free download does not establish permission for commercial redistribution.

- Download the JPEG. If the page opens a preview rather than saving a file, Control-click or right-click the image and use your browser’s image-saving option. Save the original image, not a screenshot or thumbnail.
- On current macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wallpaper.
- Choose the downloaded picture using the image-selection control available in Wallpaper settings.
- If you use multiple displays or desktop Spaces, check whether you want the same picture shown across them. Apple documents a “Show on all Spaces” option, though labels and layout can vary by macOS version.
You can also locate the file in Finder, Control-click or right-click it, and choose the desktop-picture option if your macOS version offers it. Older releases may use different names or layouts. See Apple’s Wallpaper settings guide for the current workflow.
Static wallpapers and animated Sonoma screen savers are different
The six downloads above are still JPEG images: they do not move and do not recreate Sonoma’s screen-saver transition. Apple describes Sonoma’s slow-motion landscape screen savers as transitioning into desktop wallpaper after login. Those aerials are selected separately through macOS’s Wallpaper or Screen Saver settings; they are not part of the six-image JPEG collection.
In Wallpaper settings, browse the available wallpaper and aerial categories. Apple says an item with a download arrow must be clicked to download before you can use it. Do you need to install Sonoma?
No, not to set one of these JPEGs as a desktop background. They are ordinary image files and can be selected through Wallpaper settings on a Mac that supports user-chosen pictures. Sonoma’s native animated screen-saver experience is different and depends on the macOS features available on your system. Sonoma launched on September 26, 2023; it is not the current macOS release in 2026. If you are considering installing Sonoma, check Apple’s list of compatible Mac models.
If the image looks blurry or crops badly
- Blurry: Make sure you saved the full-size image rather than a preview or thumbnail. A smaller image enlarged for a high-resolution display can also look soft.
- Unexpected crop: macOS may scale or crop an image to fit your screen’s proportions. Try another image, use any relevant display options available in your version, or crop a copy for the target display.
- Multiple screens differ: Check whether the option to show one wallpaper on all Spaces and displays is enabled. Behavior can vary with your macOS version and setup.
- Animated aerial missing: The JPEG collection is static. Find aerials in Wallpaper or Screen Saver settings, and click the download arrow beside an item if shown.
For a 4K, 5K, 6K, ultrawide, or portrait display, use the largest available image and preview it with your Dock, menu bar, and widgets visible. The archive’s cited page lists JPEG format and file size, but does not establish a specific pixel resolution for each image, so do not assume a particular 4K or 5K dimension.
