Short answer: you can’t. Microsoft discontinued the consumer Microsoft Defender Privacy protection VPN on February 28, 2025. There is no supported Windows 10 switch, registry setting, or Microsoft 365 subscription that restores it. If you need a VPN, use a separate VPN service or a VPN supplied by your employer, school, or network administrator.
The Microsoft Defender VPN is no longer available
The feature commonly described as “Microsoft Defender VPN” was Microsoft Defender for individuals’ Privacy protection VPN. Microsoft announced an expansion of this privacy feature to Windows and macOS in April 2024, but later ended it across the consumer Defender app.
Microsoft’s end-of-support notice says the privacy-protection VPN was removed on February 28, 2025. It was also unavailable to new users and people reinstalling the app after that date. Microsoft 365 Personal or Family does not bring the discontinued feature back.
That means current tutorials promising a hidden Windows 10 Defender VPN button are likely outdated, confusing mobile behavior with Windows support, or referring to a different Microsoft product.

Why you cannot find a VPN switch
There are several reasons this claim continues to cause confusion:
- Old rollout news: Microsoft’s 2024 announcement described the Windows and macOS expansion as “coming soon.” It does not describe the feature’s final availability in 2026. Read the original announcement in Microsoft’s Security Blog alongside the later discontinuation notice.
- Wrong app: Windows Security contains Microsoft Defender Antivirus and firewall controls. It is not a VPN application.
- Mobile and desktop confusion: Microsoft’s support material distinguishes mobile Defender behavior from the discontinued consumer privacy VPN. A Microsoft Q&A response also states that the consumer VPN was not available as a Windows 10 or Windows 11 feature.
- Subscription confusion: Microsoft Defender for individuals is associated with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, but those subscriptions no longer include the retired privacy-protection VPN.
What the old Defender Privacy protection feature was
Historically, Defender Privacy protection was intended to help protect online activity, particularly when using public Wi-Fi. It used VPN technology to create a protected connection, and availability depended on platform, region, and Microsoft 365 eligibility.
It should not be treated as a full replacement for every paid VPN service. The available information does not establish that it offered features such as broad country selection, reliable streaming access, port forwarding, or a permanent Windows-wide tunnel.

Microsoft also notes that the Defender iOS app may use a local loopback VPN for web protection. That is a different mechanism from the discontinued privacy-protection VPN and should not be interpreted as a Windows 10 VPN service.
What Microsoft Defender is—and is not

How to connect Windows 10 to a separate VPN
If your goal is encrypted traffic on Windows, use a reputable independent VPN provider or configuration supplied by your organization. Do not describe this as enabling Microsoft Defender VPN.
- Obtain a VPN subscription or configuration from a reputable provider, employer, school, or network administrator.
- Install the provider’s official Windows application, or collect the required server address, VPN type, username, password, certificate, and pre-shared key.
- Open Settings → Network & Internet → VPN.
- Select Add a VPN connection.
- Choose the appropriate VPN provider, enter the server and sign-in details, save the profile, and select Connect.
- Confirm that the VPN application or Windows network panel reports an active connection. Check that the websites and applications you need still work.
Labels can vary between Windows 10 builds and VPN protocols. Many commercial providers expect you to use their own application rather than create a manual Windows profile.

If the connection fails
- Recheck the server address, VPN type, credentials, certificate, and pre-shared key.
- Try the provider’s official app if the manual profile will not authenticate.
- Temporarily test whether the VPN’s kill switch is blocking traffic when the tunnel cannot connect.
- Check for conflicts with another VPN, proxy, firewall rule, corporate security tool, or DNS application.
- Contact the provider or administrator rather than downloading unofficial “VPN fix” tools.
What to do if you are specifically looking for Microsoft’s VPN
There is no supported activation sequence. You can open the Microsoft Defender app if it is installed and look for a privacy-protection or VPN tile, but its absence is expected after the retirement.

What Microsoft Defender still provides
Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Security remain separate from the discontinued VPN. They provide malware detection, firewall controls, and related device-security functions; they do not encrypt all of your internet traffic or hide your connection from a VPN provider.

There is also an important Windows 10 support distinction. Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists Windows Defender for Windows 10 with a support end date of October 14, 2025. Microsoft separately announced that Defender Antivirus security-intelligence updates for Windows 10 would continue through October 2028. Those malware-detection updates do not mean Windows 10 itself continues to receive normal operating-system security updates.

A VPN can encrypt the connection between your device and the VPN operator, which may reduce exposure to snooping on an untrusted local network. It does not patch Windows, fix vulnerable applications, replace antivirus protection, stop phishing, secure compromised accounts, or make unsafe downloads safe.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 where the hardware is eligible, considering eligible Extended Security Updates, or evaluating alternatives such as Windows 365. Choose an alternative based on your goal
- Public Wi-Fi: A reputable VPN can help protect traffic from local-network snooping. Also use HTTPS, multifactor authentication, current applications, and cautious network behavior.
- All Windows applications: Prefer a provider with a Windows app or a correctly configured system-level profile. Check kill-switch and DNS-leak behavior.
- Work or school access: Use the VPN supplied by the organization. A consumer VPN is not a substitute for an employer’s remote-access system.
- Multiple devices or a household: Compare supported platforms, simultaneous-connection limits, router support, and renewal terms.
- Microsoft 365 benefits: Microsoft 365 Personal and Family may still be useful for Office apps, OneDrive, and remaining Defender or identity features, but do not buy either plan solely for a Windows 10 VPN. Microsoft’s US buying page currently lists Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and Family at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year; prices and promotions can change.
Potential independent providers include Proton VPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and Windscribe. These are alternatives, not Microsoft Defender replacements. Verify current pricing, free-plan limits, minimum Windows version, logging disclosures, and renewal conditions on each provider’s official site.
If an old Defender VPN profile remains on Android
Microsoft specifically advises Android users who still see the retired profile to remove it:
- Open Android Settings.
- Search for VPN.
- Select the Microsoft Defender VPN profile, if present.
- Remove the profile.
Microsoft says Windows, iOS, and macOS users do not need to take action for the discontinued feature. The Android cleanup applies only if the old profile remains on the device.
