Before selling, gifting, trading in, or recycling an Amazon Echo, do two separate things: deregister it from your Amazon account and factory-reset the exact model. Then review Alexa voice history and remove any routines or connected services you no longer need. A reset clears device-local settings; it does not necessarily delete account-level Alexa history.
This guide focuses on U.S. options where trade-in and recycling availability can vary. Amazon’s app labels and device controls may change, so use the instructions for your Echo’s exact model.
Quick checklist before an Echo leaves your home
- Identify the exact model and generation; check its trade-in quote or likely resale interest before deciding to recycle it.
- Save routines or household settings you want to recreate, and remove any personal photos or custom content from an Echo Show if it is accessible.
- Review Alexa voice history and delete recordings or transcripts you no longer want retained.
- Remove the Echo from routines and review smart-home, household, child, communication, camera, and media-service connections.
- Deregister the Echo from your Amazon account.
- Factory-reset the hardware using Amazon’s instructions for that exact model—not a generic button combination.
- Confirm it returns to its initial setup state rather than showing your account or personal content.
- For Echo Auto, also forget it in your phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Choose whether to keep, sell, gift, trade in, or recycle it. Include the correct power adapter if transferring it.
First, decide whether to keep, sell, trade in, or recycle it
Don’t assume an old Echo is worthless—or that it supports every current Alexa feature. Check the model and generation, condition, included adapter, and compatibility with the services or smart-home devices you use. Save routines and settings you may want to recreate before removing the device.

In the U.S., Amazon Trade-In accepts some Echo devices and other eligible electronics. It provides an item-specific quote, commonly as an Amazon gift card; any additional promotion depends on current terms and eligibility. There is no universal Echo trade-in value. Check the live offer for your exact model and compare it with private-sale options, especially if the Echo is in good condition and has its original adapter. For a private sale or gift, identify the model accurately and state its condition, included accessories, and whether it has been deregistered and reset. Never share your Amazon login with the recipient. If the Echo is broken, not eligible for trade-in, or impractical to ship or sell, check Amazon’s U.S. device-recycling information or local electronics-recycling options. Confirm current accepted devices and shipping terms rather than assuming every Echo qualifies.
Review Alexa history and account-level information
A factory reset is not a substitute for reviewing Alexa history in your Amazon account. Amazon provides controls to review and delete voice recordings and transcripts through the Alexa app or Alexa privacy settings. In the app, try More → Alexa Privacy → Voice History or Manage Your Alexa Data; names and placement may vary by app version. Review the available device and date filters, then delete the history you choose. Amazon also documents voice commands such as “Alexa, delete what I just said” and “Alexa, delete everything I said today.” See Amazon’s Alexa privacy guidance for current controls.

If the Echo is an Echo Show, check for personal photos or content and review camera-related settings, Visual ID, Home Monitoring, calling, and video features where applicable. Available functions differ by model. Amazon documents Visual ID controls and Echo Show Home Monitoring; screen menus can differ across devices and software experiences. Also review household or Amazon Kids profiles and any communication permissions tied to the device.
Deregister the Echo from your Amazon account
Deregistering and factory-resetting are different steps. Deregistration removes the Echo’s connection to your Amazon account and its Amazon services and content. A factory reset clears device-local settings and personal information. For a transfer, do both.

- Sign in to your Amazon account and open Amazon’s Devices page.
- Select the Echo you are giving up.
- Choose Deregister and confirm.
The Alexa app may expose equivalent controls under Devices or the device’s settings; labels can vary by version and region. The web account route is useful if the Echo is missing, broken, or no longer connected to Wi-Fi. Amazon says a deregistered device can be registered again later if you decide to keep it.
Factory-reset the exact Echo model
Use Amazon’s reset instructions for the exact model and generation. Button combinations differ; a wrong combination may restart a device without fully erasing it. A successful reset should return the Echo to its initial setup state. The exact light-ring or screen behavior varies.

For Echo Show, follow the reset path for your particular screen model; do not infer it from a speaker’s button sequence. Amazon’s screen-device documentation notes that menu items may differ on some models. If reset or setup is failing, Amazon’s Echo troubleshooting guidance includes disconnecting power, waiting 30 seconds, and reconnecting as a troubleshooting step. That is not itself a factory reset.

Before the Echo leaves, inspect the Alexa account for connections that may outlast the hardware or need to be recreated elsewhere:

- Routines: Check triggers and actions that refer to the old Echo, including announcements, alarms, reminders, and timers.
- Smart home: Review lights, plugs, locks, thermostats, cameras, and doorbells. A full reset removes the Echo’s smart-home connections, but review the account to make sure other devices and routines are still configured as you intend.
- Bluetooth: Forget remembered phones, headphones, or speakers where the Echo’s settings allow it. Echo Auto specifically calls for removing the Bluetooth pairing from the phone.
- Household and communication: Check profiles, Amazon Kids settings, Drop In, calling, and messaging permissions.
- Services: Review linked music, podcast, radio, and video services, and move or cancel a device-specific service if needed.
- Echo Show features: Review photos, camera permissions, Visual ID, and Home Monitoring where supported.
These are account and household cleanup checks—not a claim that each item is stored on the Echo itself. The point is to avoid leaving an unwanted routine, permission, or service association behind when the hardware is gone.
If the Echo is missing or broken
If it is missing: Deregister it from your Amazon account as soon as possible, review and delete Alexa history as desired, and remove it from routines and smart-home settings. If you think it might still connect to your home network, changing your Wi-Fi password is a reasonable extra precaution. That is a security precaution, not an Amazon requirement.
If it will not power on: Deregister it remotely and review account-level history and connections. You cannot verify a hardware reset if the Echo cannot power on, so do not claim it was erased. Use an electronics-recycling option rather than ordinary household disposal, and check local requirements. If the device was already handed over, deregister it remotely and ask the recipient not to connect it until you have done so; contact Amazon support if it remains associated with your account.

Choose the right second life

Final handoff check
- The Echo is deregistered from your Amazon account.
- You reviewed Alexa voice history and deleted what you chose.
- The exact model’s factory-reset procedure completed, and the device shows its setup state—or, if it is broken, you have not claimed it was reset.
- You reviewed routines, smart-home links, profiles, services, and Bluetooth pairings that matter to your setup.
- You included the correct power adapter if selling or gifting it.
Amazon says it wipes, deregisters, and resets devices in its own refurbishment process, but that is not a reason to ship an Echo with your account still attached. Prepare it yourself before transfer.
