Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if its final price is close to the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s. Samsung’s newer flagship is no longer a leak: it was announced on February 25, 2026, and became generally available on March 11, 2026. The Galaxy S25 Ultra remains an excellent phone, but in September 2026 it makes sense mainly as a heavily discounted, clearance, open-box, or refurbished purchase.
The “leaked S26 Ultra” is now an outdated premise
The Galaxy S25 Ultra launched in January 2025. Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series on February 25, 2026, and general availability began on March 11. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is now listed for sale in the US through Samsung’s official buying page.
That changes the decision. This is no longer a question of whether to risk waiting for an unconfirmed phone. It is a comparison between an older flagship and its released successor.
The S26 Ultra is a meaningful refinement, not a complete redesign. It adds a built-in Privacy Display, a newer Snapdragon platform, revised cameras, and a slightly thinner and lighter body. But both phones retain the large Ultra format, a 6.9-inch QHD+ 120Hz display, a 5,000mAh battery, and a 200MP main camera.

What the Galaxy S26 Ultra improves
Privacy Display is the most distinctive upgrade
The S26 Ultra’s built-in Privacy Display is designed to restrict side-angle viewing. That can be useful on public transport, during travel, at work, or whenever banking details and private messages are visible.
It is not automatically better for every user. Privacy technology can involve trade-offs in viewing angles, brightness, color, or sharpness when active. The feature is most valuable if you regularly use your phone around other people; it is much less compelling if you mainly use it at home.

Samsung presents Privacy Display as a major S26 Ultra feature in its launch coverage. Whether it can be controlled separately for individual apps, and how much image quality changes in practice, depends on the phone’s software controls and independent testing.

The newer processor is better for demanding workloads
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy gives the S26 Ultra a newer performance platform. Its advantages are most relevant to sustained gaming, emulation, video editing, on-device AI processing, and keeping demanding apps responsive over a longer ownership period.
The S25 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy is still far more powerful than most people need. Messaging, streaming, navigation, social apps, web browsing, and ordinary photography should not suddenly feel inadequate on the older phone. A benchmark advantage is not the same as a dramatic everyday improvement.
The S26’s later launch also gives it a newer software baseline and a longer effective ownership window. That is a practical benefit for someone buying a phone in 2026 and keeping it for several years, even though exact update promises should be checked against Samsung’s formal policy for the buyer’s region.

Samsung lists the S26 Ultra with a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide, 10MP 3x telephoto, 50MP 5x telephoto, and 12MP front camera. The S25 Ultra also uses a 200MP main camera and 50MP ultrawide, with telephoto hardware centered on 3x and 5x optical zoom.

The key point is that newer specifications do not automatically prove better photographs. A larger or newer sensor may improve detail, low-light performance, autofocus, or dynamic range, but Samsung’s image processing also affects color, HDR, sharpening, and night-mode results.
For camera buyers, the S26 Ultra is the safer choice if the price difference is small. For S25 Ultra buyers, the camera changes alone are not a reason to pay full price for an upgrade unless independent samples show a benefit in the specific situations they care about: portraits, indoor scenes, daylight 5x zoom, or ultrawide photography.
The body is slightly thinner and lighter
Samsung lists the S26 Ultra at 7.9mm and 214g, compared with 8.2mm and 218g for the S25 Ultra. That is a small change, but it may matter because Ultra phones are large and heavy by design.

These changes may make it feel different in the hand, but neither phone becomes compact. If you want a smaller device, changing between these two Ultra models will not solve that problem.

What remains basically the same
- Display: Both use a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz.
- Battery capacity: Both have 5,000mAh batteries. The S26 may deliver different endurance because of processor efficiency, display behavior, software, brightness, and network conditions, but it is not a capacity upgrade.
- Main camera: Both retain a 200MP primary camera.
- Product identity: Both are oversized, premium Samsung phones built around cameras, S Pen productivity, Galaxy AI, and long-term flagship performance.
- Price class: In the US, both list at $1,299.99 for 256GB on Samsung’s cited product pages.
Battery, charging, and accessories
Do not buy the S26 Ultra expecting a larger battery. Its potential endurance advantage must come from efficiency and software, not capacity. Actual battery life will depend on screen brightness, cellular reception, camera use, gaming, video playback, and Privacy Display behavior.
Charging claims require regional care. Wired and wireless standards, maximum speeds, and accessory compatibility can vary by market. Pre-launch reports discussed possible charging changes, but rumors should not be treated as final specifications. Check Samsung’s regional specification page before buying.
Neither phone includes a wall charger in the box. Samsung’s US S26 Ultra listing includes the phone, data cable, and ejection pin. Buyers should also verify whether their existing charger supports the phone’s maximum speed and whether a preferred wireless charger or case remains compatible.

Samsung’s US listed prices make the 256GB S25 Ultra difficult to recommend at full price:

These are listed prices, not guaranteed checkout prices. Inventory, promotions, trade-in credits, colors, and retailer pricing change. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP file marked an S25 Ultra SKU as “EOL,” which supports treating the S25 as a model moving toward clearance rather than a same-price alternative.
Three ways the price comparison can work
- Same price: If a 256GB S25 Ultra costs $1,299.99 and the S26 Ultra also costs $1,299.99, buy the S26 Ultra. You get the newer processor, Privacy Display, revised cameras, and a later ownership cycle at no extra list price.
- Large S25 discount: Buy the S25 Ultra if the saving is substantial and you do not need Privacy Display, the revised camera system, or the newest processor. The S25’s core experience remains flagship-grade.
- Small effective price gap after trade-in: Compare the final amount, not the advertised monthly payment. If a promotion makes the S26 only $100–$200 more, its newer hardware and longer useful life usually justify choosing it.
Samsung has advertised trade-in savings of up to $720 for the S26 Ultra and up to $570 for the S25 Ultra, but these are promotional ceilings. The exact amount depends on the device, condition, market, and offer terms. Carrier deals may also use 24- or 36-month bill credits, require a particular plan, or make the discount conditional on a trade-in. Calculate the total cost over the full installment period.
Should you use Samsung New Galaxy Club?
Samsung’s New Galaxy Club advertises access to 50% of the Galaxy S25 series’ value when upgrading to the S26 series. For Galaxy S25 Ultra members, Samsung lists $8.33 per month until the customer upgrades and trades in the original phone or cancels.

This can suit annual upgraders who value predictable upgrade access. It is a poor fit for someone who keeps phones for three or more years, dislikes recurring fees, wants to sell privately, or may not meet upgrade and trade-in conditions. Compare the program’s total payments and conditions with simply buying the phone and selling it later.
Who should buy each phone?
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if:
- The S25 Ultra is within roughly $100–$200 of its price.
- You want Samsung’s newest processor and the longest remaining ownership cycle.
- You commute, travel, work in public, or handle sensitive information on your phone.
- You frequently use zoom or ultrawide cameras.
- You plan to keep the phone for several years.
- You want the strongest future resale position.
Buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra if:
- It is substantially cheaper than the S26 Ultra.
- You mainly use messaging, streaming, navigation, social apps, and ordinary photography.
- You do not need Privacy Display.
- You find a discounted 512GB or 1TB model near the price of the S26 Ultra’s 256GB version.
- You are buying reputable refurbished or open-box stock with a strong return policy and warranty.
Keep your existing S25 Ultra if:
- It performs well and its battery remains acceptable.
- You do not have a specific need for Privacy Display, newer camera hardware, or the newer processor.
- The upgrade would require paying close to full price after trade-in.
- You are satisfied with its display, S Pen, cameras, and software.
Consider a different phone category if:
- You prioritize battery endurance above Samsung’s ecosystem and camera features.
- You want a smaller phone.
- You expect substantially faster charging.
- You do not use Samsung-specific software, accessories, or S Pen features.
Check these details before paying
- Confirm whether the S25 is new, open-box, refurbished, or carrier-locked.
- Compare the final checkout price after trade-in, not just the monthly installment.
- Read whether a carrier discount is paid immediately or through bill credits.
- Check storage, color availability, return period, warranty, and regional model number.
- Verify wired and wireless charging specifications for your country.
- Confirm the exact S Pen functions you need; fitting the stylus into the phone does not prove that every Bluetooth, remote-control, or gesture feature is identical.
- Check current Samsung Care+ pricing and coverage before adding it. Prices and terms vary by product, state, and promotion.
Final verdict
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the better purchase when prices are close. It offers the newest processor, built-in Privacy Display, revised camera hardware, a lighter design, and a later ownership cycle without increasing the US 256GB starting MSRP listed by Samsung.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra is not a bad phone—it is a bad full-price deal beside its successor. Buy it only when a genuine discount makes its nearly unchanged core experience substantially cheaper. If you already own the S25 Ultra, upgrade only if Privacy Display, the camera changes, or the newer processor solves a real problem for you.
