Dolby Vision Extensions is a legitimate Microsoft Store component for supported Windows Dolby Vision playback and display workflows. It does not, by itself, add Dolby Vision to an HDR10-only monitor, unsupported GPU, ordinary HDMI connection, or incompatible media player.

To work, the complete chain usually needs a compatible Windows system, graphics driver, Dolby Vision-capable display and input, suitable connection, supported content, and a compatible decoder or player. HEVC support and PlayReady hardware DRM may also be required for particular video files and streaming services.

What is Dolby Vision Extensions?

The name normally refers to the Microsoft Store package Dolby Vision Extensions, product ID 9PLTG1LWPHLF. It is a Windows software component associated with Dolby Vision decoding and display integration—not a browser add-on and not a standalone Dolby Vision upgrade.

Dolby Vision Extensions versus related components

Component Purpose
Dolby Vision Extensions Windows component associated with Dolby Vision video and display workflows.
HEVC Video Extensions HEVC/H.265 codec support. It is needed for many HDR scenarios, including some Netflix HDR playback, and Dolby Vision content is frequently carried in HEVC.
Dolby Access A separate Microsoft Store application primarily associated with Dolby Atmos and supported audio experiences. It is not a replacement for Dolby Vision Extensions.
OEM drivers and firmware Device-specific graphics, display, color-management, and firmware support supplied by a laptop, monitor, or TV manufacturer.

Neither Dolby Access nor HEVC Video Extensions can create Dolby Vision capability in a display that does not have it.

What you need for Dolby Vision on a Windows PC

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 with current updates. Microsoft’s Dolby Vision display API is listed as available from Windows 10 version 2004, build 19041.
  • A Dolby Vision-capable internal panel or external display.
  • A display that supports Dolby Vision through the specific input you are using. A TV may support Dolby Vision in its built-in apps but not from a PC HDMI input.
  • Compatible integrated graphics or GPU hardware and a current driver.
  • A suitable direct connection. Microsoft’s general HDR guidance discusses DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or newer, USB-C, and Thunderbolt for external HDR displays; those requirements alone do not guarantee Dolby Vision.
  • A cable and signal path that preserve the required resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and metadata.
  • Dolby Vision-encoded content.
  • A compatible decoder and media player.
  • HEVC support when the content uses HEVC/H.265.
  • PlayReady hardware DRM for some protected streaming content.

Microsoft’s general requirements are described in What is HDR in Windows?. “HDR,” “HDR10,” or “DisplayHDR” on a product specification does not automatically mean the device accepts Dolby Vision from Windows.

How to install it

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Search for Dolby Vision Extensions, or open the official listing using product ID 9PLTG1LWPHLF.
  3. Install or update the package.
  4. Install HEVC Video Extensions if your files or streaming service require HEVC decoding.
  5. Update the graphics driver through Windows Update or the GPU/device manufacturer.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Connect the display directly to the PC if possible.
  8. Open Settings → System → Display, select the intended screen, open HDR, and turn on Use HDR.

On supported Dolby Vision-certified monitors, Windows may expose Use Dolby Vision mode. Microsoft says Windows automatically chooses Dolby Vision when it is available, while also allowing users to disable Dolby Vision mode and use HDR10 instead. Some displays have lower peak brightness in Dolby Vision mode, so HDR10 can be preferable for desktop work or games. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guide.

Do not expect a new standalone Dolby Vision application. A successful installation may instead make a Windows capability, HDR setting, decoder path, or display mode available.

How to verify that Dolby Vision is actually working

Installing the extension is not proof that the TV or monitor is receiving Dolby Vision. Check several indicators together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Windows identifies the correct display and exposes HDR or Dolby Vision-related capability information.
  2. Use HDR is enabled, and Use Dolby Vision mode appears where supported.
  3. You are playing known Dolby Vision-encoded content with a compatible application.
  4. The display’s information panel or on-screen badge reports Dolby Vision when the signal is received.

A file can contain Dolby Vision metadata yet be decoded and output as HDR10 or SDR. Conversely, a player may process Dolby Vision internally without sending a native Dolby Vision signal to the display. A television badge is useful evidence, but it is not the only diagnostic.

Why Dolby Vision may still fail

The extension will not install

  • Update Windows and confirm that the Microsoft Store is signed in and functioning.
  • Check whether the device manufacturer requires an OEM image, driver, or recovery package.
  • On Windows N, install the Media Feature Pack. Additional codecs and media applications may still be needed afterward.
  • Retry after repairing or resetting the Microsoft Store if the Store itself is malfunctioning.

Windows shows only HDR10

  1. Connect the PC directly to the TV or monitor.
  2. Temporarily remove AV receivers, splitters, docks, capture devices, and adapters.
  3. Select the correct display in Settings → System → Display.
  4. Enable HDR.
  5. Update the GPU driver, display firmware, and Windows.
  6. Try another certified cable and another HDMI input.

Common causes include a TV that supports Dolby Vision only in built-in apps, a GPU or driver that does not expose Dolby Vision output, an EDID that does not advertise support, or an intermediary device that changes the signal.

The video has green, purple, washed-out, or incorrect colors

Possible causes include an unsupported Dolby Vision profile, an enhancement layer the player cannot process, broken metadata, GPU decoder limitations, incorrect HDR fallback, double tone mapping, or a mismatch between the player and display mode. “The file plays” does not prove that native Dolby Vision is reaching the display.

Streaming stays at SDR or HDR10

Protected streaming depends on the service, subscription, Windows application or browser, PlayReady hardware DRM, codec, GPU, driver, display, and connection. Dolby Vision Extensions alone cannot force a service to deliver Dolby Vision. Browsers and native applications can also use different media pipelines. A reported Edge and Media Foundation failure is a troubleshooting example, not a universal compatibility statement.

Dolby Vision works on the TV but not from the PC

This usually indicates a difference between the TV’s internal playback path and its external-input capabilities. Check the exact HDMI input specification, TV firmware, PC mode, supported resolution and refresh rate, GPU driver, and every device between the PC and TV.

What about VLC, Plex, Kodi, mpv, and other players?

There is no safe blanket compatibility claim. Third-party players may use their own FFmpeg build, DXVA or D3D11 decoding, native Dolby Vision handling, HDR10 fallback, software tone mapping, or a player-specific renderer. Some may ignore Windows Store media components entirely.

Therefore, a player may work without Dolby Vision Extensions, or fail to produce Dolby Vision despite the extension being installed. FFmpeg documents Dolby Vision bitstream filters for manipulating metadata in HEVC and AV1 streams, but that is a media-processing capability—not proof that Windows or a particular display will output native Dolby Vision. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Can it enable Dolby Vision on an HDR10-only display?

No, not in a supported sense. Windows can read display capability information, but the Store component cannot add Dolby Vision processing, panel capability, firmware certification, or a compatible signal input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EDID overrides, registry changes, custom resolution tools, metadata hacks, and unofficial activation packages may alter what Windows believes a display supports. They do not prove that the display, GPU, cable, or television firmware can process Dolby Vision correctly. They are unsupported experiments and can create instability or misleading results.

Dolby Vision or HDR10?

Choose Dolby Vision when Choose HDR10 when
Your display, GPU, driver, player, and content are all compatible. The display is HDR10-only or Dolby Vision output is unreliable.
You want native playback of Dolby Vision-encoded content. Dolby Vision mode reduces brightness or produces undesirable tone mapping.
Your complete HDMI path is documented to support the required signal. You mainly use the PC for desktop work or games and HDR10 behaves better.

HDR10 is generally simpler and more broadly supported. Dolby Vision can provide a display-specific HDR mode, but PC compatibility varies more across players, drivers, displays, and connection paths.

Safety and download advice

Use the official Microsoft Store listing or a trusted OEM driver and recovery channel. Avoid repacked installers, cracked packages, unofficial DLL downloads, registry “activation” scripts, EDID hacks presented as guaranteed fixes, and manually extracted Store packages. They cannot create missing hardware support and may introduce security, licensing, or stability problems.

Bottom line

Dolby Vision Extensions is a real Windows component that can be required for supported Dolby Vision workflows. Install it when Windows or your device documentation calls for it, but treat it as one part of the chain. A compatible display input, GPU, driver, connection, content, codec, DRM path, and player are equally important. If the hardware is HDR10-only or the player cannot output Dolby Vision, the extension will not change that.
