Yes. The original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X all support 5 GHz Wi‑Fi through their built-in wireless hardware. You do not need a USB or proprietary adapter. Microsoft lists the original model as dual-band 802.11n, while the Xbox One S and Xbox One X use dual-band 802.11ac wireless. (Microsoft specifications)
Whether 5 GHz is the best choice depends on distance, walls, interference and router settings. A strong 5 GHz connection is often faster; a weak one can be less reliable than 2.4 GHz or wired Ethernet.
Which Xbox One models support 5 GHz?

These are different Wi‑Fi generations, so do not assume every Xbox One has the same maximum link rate. 5 GHz is a local Wi‑Fi radio band between your Xbox and router. 5G normally means a cellular mobile-network technology. Routers sometimes name their 5 GHz network “5G” or “5GHz,” but that label does not mean the console is using cellular 5G.

How to connect an Xbox One to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system → Settings.
- Choose General → Network settings.
- Select Set up wireless network.
- Choose your router’s 5 GHz network name (SSID) and enter its password.
- Run Test network connection. If you play online, also run the multiplayer/NAT test.
Menu wording can vary slightly by system software or region, but wireless setup is under Settings → General → Network settings. If the two router bands share one SSID, the router may steer the Xbox between them; separate names temporarily if you need to force a specific band.
Should you use 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz?
Microsoft describes 5 GHz as generally providing higher throughput, while 2.4 GHz travels farther and penetrates walls better. (Microsoft’s Wi‑Fi guidance)

- Try 5 GHz first when the Xbox is in the same room or nearby, you want faster downloads or streaming, and the 2.4 GHz band is crowded.
- Try 2.4 GHz when the console is several rooms or a floor away, the 5 GHz signal is weak, or 5 GHz repeatedly disconnects.
- Use Ethernet when the router is close enough to cable. It avoids wireless interference and signal loss and is usually the most consistent option for a stationary console.
5 GHz does not automatically lower ping. A strong, uncongested link may reduce local delays or packet loss, but latency also depends on the router, broadband connection, congestion and the game server. A weak 5 GHz signal can perform worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection.

- Confirm the router’s 5 GHz radio is enabled and the SSID is not hidden.
- Check whether both bands use one shared name through band steering. Give them temporary separate names.
- Move the Xbox close to the router and scan again.
- Restart the router and console.
- Try a conventional, non-DFS 5 GHz channel. DFS availability and behavior vary by country and device, and a channel change can make a network visible.
- Use a compatible security setting such as WPA2-Personal/AES or a WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. Avoid WPA3-only while troubleshooting an older console.
- Update router firmware and Xbox system software, then test 2.4 GHz to identify whether the issue is band-specific.
Not every router configuration is guaranteed to work with every regional console and firmware combination, so treat channel and security changes as compatibility tests rather than universal Xbox requirements.

If Xbox One connects but keeps disconnecting
- Weak signal or obstacles: Reposition the router or console, use a nearer mesh access point, or switch to 2.4 GHz.
- Band steering: Separate the SSIDs and connect explicitly to 5 GHz.
- DFS channel changes: Test a standard 5 GHz channel.
- Congestion: Change channels and reduce heavy competing traffic.
- Router issue: Update firmware and test another channel width or security mode.
- Not actually Wi‑Fi: Run the Xbox network and multiplayer tests separately; NAT errors, Xbox service outages and ISP problems can look like wireless faults.
If both Wi‑Fi bands fail while other devices work normally, test with Ethernet. A wired connection can confirm whether the console’s wireless hardware needs service.
When to improve the home network
Buy a networking product only if coverage or wiring is the limitation—not because the Xbox needs a special 5 GHz adapter.

- Ethernet cable: Best for a nearby console. Cat5e or Cat6 is sufficient; see Monoprice Ethernet cables for an example category.
- Mesh Wi‑Fi or an access point: Useful across floors or thick walls. Ethernet backhaul is preferable; a wireless mesh backhaul still depends on signal quality. Examples include eero, TP-Link Deco and NETGEAR Orbi.
- Powerline networking: An option when rooms share suitable electrical wiring, but performance varies widely. See NETGEAR Powerline or TP-Link Powerline.
- Replacement router: Consider one only when the existing unit has poor coverage, outdated firmware or inadequate channel controls.
Range extenders can repeat a weak signal and add delay, so they are not automatically an improvement for gaming.
Bottom line
Every Xbox One family console supports 5 GHz Wi‑Fi without an external adapter. Use 5 GHz when the signal is strong and nearby; test 2.4 GHz through walls or over distance; and choose Ethernet whenever reliable consistency matters more than convenience.
