Generally, no: ordinary Windows diagnostics are not described as periodically taking screenshots. The important exception is Recall, a feature on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs that can save screen snapshots periodically—but saving is off by default for each new user and requires opting in. To check or change it, open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
What Windows does—and does not—capture automatically
Windows has several features that handle information about your PC, but collecting diagnostic information is not the same as saving a series of screenshots. Microsoft describes required diagnostic data as information about device settings, capabilities, and whether Windows is functioning properly. Optional diagnostic data can include website and device activity. Crash memory data may also unintentionally contain parts of a file that was open when a crash occurred. The cited Microsoft diagnostics documentation does not describe periodic screenshots as part of those diagnostic categories.
That distinction is useful, but it is not a guarantee about every program on an individual computer. An application you installed, a remote-access or monitoring tool, malware, or a workplace management policy could have separate screen-capture behavior. The Windows diagnostics description cannot establish what is installed or configured on your particular PC.
Recall is the built-in feature to check first
Recall is a Windows 11 experience available on Copilot+ PCs. When enabled, it can save screen snapshots periodically so that a user can find and revisit content they previously viewed. Microsoft Support says: “If you don’t choose to opt in, it will be off by default and snapshots will not be saved.” This opt-in setup means Recall is a specific exception to the general answer—not evidence that every Windows PC is routinely recording its screen.

Microsoft says Recall snapshots are processed locally and, in normal use, are not shared with Microsoft or third parties. That statement is about Recall snapshots specifically. It does not mean that no other Windows data can be sent: diagnostic data is governed by the privacy settings, and screenshots a user attaches to Recall feedback are sent with that feedback.
How to check, pause, or turn off Recall snapshots
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Check Save snapshots. Turn it off to stop Recall from saving snapshots.
Recall also provides controls to pause snapshot saving, filter apps and websites, adjust retention and storage controls, and delete saved snapshots. If your goal is to remove existing captures as well as prevent new ones, use the available deletion control; switching off saving is the control for stopping future snapshots, not a substitute for deleting material already saved.

Availability and controls can depend on whether the PC supports Recall and how it is managed. If you cannot find the Recall settings, that alone does not prove a screenshot tool is running. On a work or school computer, an administrator may hide, configure, or control settings. Ask your IT administrator which monitoring and retention policies apply rather than trying to bypass organization controls.

If you have a concrete reason to think images are being captured, start with the controls and software on the affected PC. These checks help narrow down the source; they cannot prove that no process has ever captured the screen.

- Check Recall: Use the Settings path above, then inspect its saving, filtering, pause, and deletion controls.
- Review recently installed apps: Look for unfamiliar screen recording, remote support, productivity, or monitoring software. Check each app’s own settings and documentation before removing it.
- Consider work or school management: A managed computer may have policies or approved tools that are not controlled by your personal Windows settings. Ask the organization’s IT team what is configured.
- Review security software findings: If you suspect malware or see other signs of compromise, use your installed security software’s investigation and remediation guidance. The cited Windows and Recall information does not identify or diagnose malware on a particular PC.
- Keep the symptom specific: Note what you observed, when it happened, and which app was open. A screenshot saved by an app after a user action is different from periodic background snapshots.
Common questions and troubleshooting
Recall does not appear in Settings
Recall is specific to supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. If your PC is not a Copilot+ PC, or it is managed by an organization, the feature or its controls may not be available to you. Check the device’s support information or ask your administrator; do not infer that another app is taking screenshots merely because this settings page is absent.
Save snapshots is already off
That setting stops Recall from saving new snapshots. If your concern is about images that may already exist, look for Recall’s deletion control and use it as appropriate. If the captures appear to come from another program, investigate that program separately; the Recall setting does not govern third-party applications.

The setting is unavailable or changes back
On a work or school device, an administrator can control relevant settings. Contact IT for the applicable policy and the right way to request a change. On a personal device, verify that you are looking at Recall’s own settings rather than a general diagnostics control: diagnostics settings and Recall snapshot saving address different kinds of information.

Does changing diagnostic settings turn off Recall?
No such relationship is established by the cited documentation. Treat diagnostic-data choices and Recall’s Save snapshots setting as separate controls, and check Recall directly if your concern is screen snapshots.

When an intentional website screenshot is different
A developer may deliberately request a screenshot of a web page using a browser automation tool or an API. That is a capture of a specified website, not evidence that Windows is automatically photographing the user’s desktop. Keep the destination and the source of the capture clear: the examples below request a screenshot of https://stripe.com through ScreenshotNeo; they do not inspect a Windows screen or change Recall settings.

Windows diagnostics are not described as routine periodic screenshot recording. On a supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PC, Recall can save periodic snapshots only after the user opts in. Check its dedicated settings to control saving or delete snapshots, and investigate separate apps or workplace policies if the concern is about a specific computer.
