No—X (formerly Twitter) currently does not notify another user when you screenshot an ordinary post, profile, thread, image, video, Space or standard direct message. Current reporting says the same is true for screen recording on iPhone, Android and the web. X could change this behavior in a future update, so “currently” is the accurate qualification.
What happens when you screenshot on X
For normal content, taking a screenshot is a local action on your device. X does not presently send the content owner an alert, push notification, banner or activity entry identifying the capture.

This table describes current, ordinary X surfaces. It is not a permanent promise about every future beta, client or new media format.
Does X notify someone when you screenshot a post, profile or thread?
No. Screenshotting a post, a reply, an entire conversation thread or someone’s profile does not currently notify the account owner. The same applies whether the screen contains text, an image, a video thumbnail or other routinely displayed post content.
X’s documented Notifications timeline covers interactions such as likes, reposts, replies, mentions, list followers and new followers. Screenshot activity is not among the notification types described there. That omission is consistent with current platform reporting, but it should not be read as a guarantee that X can never add the feature.

What about screenshots of direct messages?
A screenshot of a normal X direct message does not currently alert the sender. This is separate from read receipts. X Help Center documentation says, “Direct Messages feature read receipts so you know when people have seen your messages.” A read receipt indicates that the message was viewed; it does not reveal that the recipient took a screenshot, saved an image or started a screen recording.
Read receipts and screenshots are different events
- Read receipt: an indication that a message was opened or seen, when the relevant setting and conversation support it.
- Screenshot: a capture made by the operating system or device and not currently surfaced as an X notification for standard DMs.
If you do not want a sender to know that you opened a message, review X’s direct-message read-receipt setting. Changing that setting affects viewing status, not screenshot detection.

Current explainers report that screen recording behaves like screenshots for ordinary posts, profiles, Spaces and standard DMs: no X notification is sent. The operating system may display its own recording indicator, and someone physically watching your device could notice, but that is not an X alert to the account owner.
Do not extend this answer to every possible future feature. Platforms sometimes add view-once or disappearing media with different rules. The available current reporting about X concerns ordinary content and does not establish a universal rule for an unreleased media type or a private beta.

Why people remember different rules from other apps
Screenshot alerts are associated with disappearing-content systems on some other services. That does not make them an X feature. A rule from Snapchat, Instagram or another app cannot be imported into X without checking the specific app, content type and current version.
On X, the practical distinction is between an interaction that the platform documents—such as a like or a read receipt—and a device-level capture that X currently does not expose as a notification. An account owner may still learn about a screenshot indirectly if someone shares the captured image, quotes it elsewhere or tells them.

How to verify the behavior on your own device
If you want to check the current behavior rather than rely on an old post, use a test account or ask a friend. Avoid capturing private material without permission.
- Open the X app on iPhone or Android, or visit X in a desktop browser.
- Have the other person publish a harmless test post, or send a non-sensitive standard DM.
- Take a screenshot using the device’s normal shortcut. For a recording test, start and stop the operating-system screen recorder.
- Ask the other account to inspect its X notifications and the conversation’s read status. A read status, if present, is not evidence of a screenshot alert.
- Repeat on the client you actually use if the result matters. App and web interfaces can change independently, and a future release could alter the behavior.
This test can show whether an alert appears in that particular account and client at that time. It cannot prove that X will never introduce screenshot notifications later.

Privacy and sharing considerations
No notification does not mean a screenshot is consequence-free. A capture can contain usernames, private conversation text, location clues, account identifiers or images of people who did not expect redistribution. Before forwarding or publishing one:
- Get permission when the material is private or personally identifying.
- Crop or redact handles, profile photos, phone numbers, links and message metadata that are not necessary.
- Check whether the post is protected, subject to a workplace or community rule, or covered by a confidentiality obligation.
- Remember that deleting the original post does not remove copies already captured or shared.
These are practical privacy precautions, not evidence that X sends a screenshot alert.
What X officially documents—and what it does not
X’s help material documents the Notifications timeline as a place for interaction events, and its Direct Messages help documents read receipts. Neither description lists screenshot notifications for ordinary posts or messages. Independent current explainers likewise report no alert for a tweet, profile, thread, DM, Space or screen recording.
Because the platform has not published a permanent “never” promise, the responsible wording is “X currently does not notify users.” Recheck the in-app help and release notes if you are making a policy for a business, newsroom or moderation team.

Troubleshooting common misunderstandings
“The person knew I screenshotted it.”
That does not establish that X sent an alert. They may have seen you do it, noticed a later repost, received the image from someone else or inferred it from the conversation.

“A read receipt appeared after I captured a DM.”
The receipt means the message was viewed, not that it was captured. Opening the conversation can produce the receipt independently of a screenshot.

Check its date and whether it is describing another service, a proposal, a test or disappearing media. Current reporting for ordinary X content says no notification.
“The app behaved differently from the browser.”
Record the client, operating-system version and date. X can change interfaces in stages, so verify the exact surface you use instead of generalizing from one test.
Bottom line
As of now, X does not notify users when you screenshot ordinary posts, profiles, threads, Spaces, standard DMs or the usual on-screen content, and current reporting says ordinary screen recording works the same way. Read receipts only show that a DM was seen. Treat the answer as current platform behavior, not a permanent guarantee, and handle captured material responsibly.
