Yes—when Chromeless starts a local Chrome process and passes the argument through. Chromium itself supports --proxy-server, but Chromeless’s public package description does not promise that every version or connection mode forwards arbitrary Chrome flags. A flag given to your local browser cannot reconfigure a separately managed remote browser. Treat the result as conditional: identify where Chrome runs, confirm that your Chromeless version exposes launch arguments, then verify the browser’s actual egress IP.

What the flag actually controls

--proxy-server is a Chromium command-line option. It configures the Chrome process that receives it; it is not a setting stored in a Chromeless script. If Chromeless launches Chrome on your machine, a forwarded argument can affect that process. If Chromeless connects to a built-in or hosted remote browser, the argument in your local code does not automatically alter the remote process.

Chromeless documentation distinguishes local development, where it can control a local Chrome browser, from a remote proxy model. It also describes starting Chrome yourself and setting launchChrome: false in the Chromeless constructor. The package description does not explicitly document a universal --proxy-server option or guarantee forwarding in both modes, so check the exact package version and connection path before relying on it in production.

Goal Example Meaning
One HTTP proxy --proxy-server="http://proxy.example:8080" Routes supported browser traffic through an HTTP proxy.
HTTPS proxy endpoint --proxy-server="https://proxy.example:443" Uses an HTTPS proxy URI.
SOCKS5 --proxy-server="socks5://proxy.example:1080" Uses a SOCKSv5 proxy.
Direct connection --proxy-server="direct://" Explicitly selects a direct route.
Proxy with direct fallback --proxy-server="http://proxy.example:8080,direct://" Tries the proxy, then permits a direct connection.
Scheme mapping --proxy-server="http=https://foo:443;socks=socks5://mysocks:1080" Maps HTTP traffic to one endpoint and SOCKS traffic to another.

You can add a bypass list separately, for example --proxy-bypass-list="<local>;localhost;127.0.0.1". Keep the proxy value and bypass rules as separate arguments so quoting remains predictable in shells and process managers.

Local Chromeless: the dependable way to test the flag

The least ambiguous arrangement is to launch Chrome yourself, then let Chromeless attach without launching a second browser. This proves which process received the argument.

  1. Choose a dedicated profile

    Close any existing Chrome instance using the same profile, or supply a temporary user-data directory. A running Chrome process may ignore new command-line switches because it reuses the existing process.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Launch Chrome with the proxy argument

    On Linux, a typical command is:

    google-chrome --user-data-dir=/tmp/chromeless-proxy-profile --proxy-server="http://proxy.example:8080" --remote-debugging-port=9222

    Replace the executable name with your platform’s Chrome or Chromium binary. On macOS, invoke the application binary inside the Chrome bundle; on Windows, run chrome.exe from its installation path. Do not put credentials in the proxy URI.

  3. Connect Chromeless without launching another browser

    Use the constructor option documented by the package for an externally started browser:

    const { Chromeless } = require('chromeless');

    (async () => {
      const chromeless = new Chromeless({ launchChrome: false });
      try {
        const result = await chromeless
          .goto('https://example.com')
          .evaluate(() => ({ href: location.href, userAgent: navigator.userAgent }));
        console.log(result);
      } finally {
        await chromeless.end();
      }
    })();

    The exact connection options can vary by Chromeless release. If this constructor cannot discover the debugging endpoint, use that release’s documented remote-debugging connection setting while keeping launchChrome: false. The key diagnostic is that only the Chrome process you started carries --proxy-server.

  4. Check the browser’s observed address

    Navigate to an IP-echo service that you operate or trust and compare the result with and without the proxy. Checking from the browser page is more meaningful than checking the shell’s IP: the browser is the process whose traffic you are testing.

Chromeless-managed local launch: where forwarding can fail

If Chromeless launches Chrome for you, the flag must be inserted into the package’s local launch-argument mechanism. The public description confirms local Chrome control but does not establish a stable option name for arbitrary arguments. Do not assume that a property copied from another wrapper will work.

  • Confirm the installed Chromeless version and read its launch-options documentation.
  • Log the final Chrome command line, or inspect the Chrome process command line supplied by your operating system.
  • Use a fresh profile so an already-running Chrome process cannot absorb the request.
  • Test with a deliberately invalid proxy endpoint; a browser that still loads normally may not have received the flag (although some applications recover through fallback rules).

If your version has no documented launch-argument hook, start Chrome yourself as shown above and connect with launchChrome: false. That approach avoids guessing an undocumented Chromeless option.

Remote Chromeless sessions are a different case

A remote session has at least two processes: your client and the browser service. A local --proxy-server argument affects neither the remote Chrome process nor the service’s outbound network. Use the remote service’s documented proxy configuration instead. If the service does not expose one, the local flag cannot provide it.

This distinction also explains why a flag may appear to be ignored: your script can be correct, while the browser doing the navigation is elsewhere. Ask these questions before changing syntax:

  • Where is Chrome running—your workstation, a container, or a hosted service?
  • Who creates the Chrome process?
  • Does that component document launch-argument forwarding?
  • Does the remote service provide a separate proxy field or URL parameter?

HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5 details

HTTP and HTTPS proxies

Use the scheme that describes the proxy endpoint, not necessarily the destination website. An HTTP proxy can carry HTTPS destinations through CONNECT. An HTTPS proxy protects the connection to the proxy itself. Follow the endpoint provider’s documented scheme.

SOCKS4 and SOCKS5

Chromium supports SOCKSv4 and SOCKSv5 identifiers. Chrome does not support username/password authentication for SOCKSv5 through the flag. If your endpoint requires credentials, use an authentication mechanism supported by the proxy and browser environment, or place an authenticated gateway in front of Chrome.

Credentials

Chrome does not use credentials embedded in proxy settings. A value such as http://user:[email protected]:8080 is not a reliable authentication method. Proxy authentication proceeds through the browser’s ordinary authentication flow, which may require handling an authentication challenge or configuring the surrounding network.

Bypass rules and fallback behavior

A comma-separated fallback such as proxy,direct:// can make a failed proxy appear successful because Chrome eventually connects directly. Omit the direct fallback while diagnosing whether traffic is truly proxied. Add it only when direct recovery is an intentional policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use --proxy-bypass-list for hosts that must remain direct. Typical entries include local names, loopback addresses and internal domains, but the correct list depends on your network. A bypass rule can also make an IP test misleading if the test hostname matches the bypass pattern.

How to verify routing instead of trusting the command line

  1. Record the public IP returned by a browser page with no proxy.
  2. Restart the dedicated Chrome profile with the proxy argument.
  3. Repeat the check in that browser and compare the address, ASN or other values supplied by your diagnostic service.
  4. Test a hostname that is not in your bypass list.
  5. For difficult cases, capture a Chrome net-export log and inspect proxy resolution, connection and authentication events.

An IP change confirms that the browser used a different egress path, but it does not prove every request uses it. Test HTTP and HTTPS destinations separately, and test WebSockets or other protocols your application needs.

Troubleshooting common failures

“The flag is ignored”

Most often, Chrome was already running, Chromeless launched a different process, or the browser is remote. Stop the existing process, use a temporary profile, inspect the process command line and confirm the location of Chrome.

Proxy connection errors

Check DNS resolution from the machine running Chrome, the endpoint port, firewall rules and whether the URI scheme matches the provider. Remove authentication while testing basic reachability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication loops or 407 responses

Do not put credentials in the flag. Implement the browser’s supported authentication flow or use an intermediary that supplies credentials.

SOCKS5 works without credentials but fails with them

This is an expected limitation of Chrome’s SOCKSv5 support. Choose an authenticated design that does not depend on username/password fields in the Chrome flag.

Some URLs use the proxy and others do not

Inspect bypass rules, fallback directives and system-level proxy policies. A direct fallback intentionally permits unproxied access after proxy failure.

Local testing passes but production fails

Production may use a remote browser, a container with a different Chrome binary, or a service that strips unknown arguments. Reproduce the process topology, not just the JavaScript code, and configure the proxy at the component that owns Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance, reliability and security considerations

Every proxy adds a network hop. Expect latency to depend on geographic distance, connection reuse, DNS behavior and endpoint load. A direct fallback improves availability but weakens the guarantee that traffic is proxied. Keep proxy settings out of source control, restrict access to the debugging port, and use a dedicated profile for automated sessions.

For repeatable jobs, pin the Chrome and Chromeless versions, log the selected route and proxy errors, and fail closed when policy requires that no direct connection is allowed. A successful page load alone is not evidence of compliance; record the observed egress address and relevant net-export events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a proxy username and password directly in `–proxy-server`?

No. Chrome does not use credentials embedded in proxy settings; authentication must use the browser’s normal authentication flow or a separately configured gateway.

Does a direct fallback prove the proxy is healthy?

No. A `direct://` fallback can hide proxy failures by allowing an unproxied connection. Remove it while diagnosing route selection.

What should I inspect when a remote Chromeless browser ignores my flag?

Inspect the remote service’s own proxy configuration and launch-argument documentation. A flag on the client machine cannot change a browser process running elsewhere.

Can net-export logs replace an egress-IP check?

They complement it. Net-export reveals proxy resolution and connection events, while an egress-IP check confirms the address visible to the destination.
