No. The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max do not have Touch ID or a fingerprint scanner. They use Face ID and a passcode for device security.
Does the iPhone 15 have Touch ID?
No. None of the iPhone 15 models includes a fingerprint sensor in the display, side button, rear casing, or any other part of the phone. Apple identifies the iPhone 15 family as Face ID devices, using the TrueDepth camera system for facial recognition.
This also applies to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Its side button and Action button are not fingerprint readers, and the phone has no under-display Touch ID sensor.

What does the iPhone 15 use instead?
The iPhone 15 series uses Face ID, powered by the TrueDepth camera system. Face ID can authenticate you for:
- Unlocking the iPhone
- Authorizing Apple Pay payments
- App Store and media purchases
- Password AutoFill
- Signing in to supported third-party apps
- Opening supported password-protected apps
Face ID data is encrypted and stored on the iPhone, according to Apple. Face ID is designed to work with many glasses, hats, and scarves, although masks, certain sunglasses, dirt, and accessories can interfere. Face ID with a Mask is available on iPhone 12 and later with Apple’s stated limitations.

How to set up Face ID on an iPhone 15
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode.
- Enter your passcode, or create one if prompted.
- Tap Set Up Face ID.
- Follow the onscreen instructions and slowly move your head to complete the scan.
- Under Use Face ID For, enable features such as iPhone Unlock, Apple Pay, and Password AutoFill.
A passcode is required even when Face ID is enabled. Face ID supplements the passcode; it does not replace it.

Why is my iPhone 15 asking for a passcode?
A passcode prompt does not indicate that the phone has Touch ID. iPhones with Face ID require the passcode after events such as:
- Restarting the iPhone
- Five unsuccessful Face ID attempts
- A remote lock command
- Some security-related actions
- A sufficiently long period without an unlock
- Emergency SOS or other situations requiring additional authentication

What to do if Face ID stops working
- Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode and confirm that Face ID is enabled for the feature you are using.
- Clean the TrueDepth camera area and remove anything blocking it.
- Check whether a case or screen protector covers the camera or sensor area.
- Hold the iPhone in front of your face and look toward it at a suitable distance and orientation.
- Restart the iPhone, then enter the passcode when requested.
- If necessary, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID and set it up again.
If Face ID cannot be set up or the TrueDepth camera appears damaged, seek service from Apple or a trained technician. Improper or non-genuine repairs involving the TrueDepth system can disable Face ID and may create safety risks. See Apple’s Face ID troubleshooting guide.

Why does the screen say it is fingerprint-resistant?
The iPhone 15 Pro Max display has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. This coating helps reduce visible oil and smudges on the glass. It does not scan fingerprints and has nothing to do with Touch ID.

Your iPhone can still show fingerprints after you touch the screen. “Fingerprint-resistant” describes the screen’s surface treatment, not a biometric security feature. Apple lists this coating in the iPhone 15 Pro Max technical specifications.
Can you add fingerprint unlock to the iPhone 15?
No practical or Apple-supported method can add Touch ID to an iPhone 15. A software update, third-party app, or fingerprint-enabled screen protector cannot create the missing hardware or integrate it with iOS security.
If fingerprint authentication is essential to your buying decision, choose a device that explicitly lists Touch ID as a feature. Apple’s model lineup and availability can change, so verify the exact model before purchasing.
