Yes. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max can save photos in HEIF Max at up to 48 MP, but the feature requires iOS 17 or later. It uses the rear main camera; zoom, Night mode, flash, and other shooting conditions can affect the final resolution. The standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus do not have the 48 MP main camera needed for 48 MP capture.
What you need
- An iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max.
- iOS 17 or later. The phones launched in 2022, but HEIF Max arrived with iOS 17.
- Resolution control enabled in Camera settings.
Apple identifies HEIF Max as an option on iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models running iOS 17 or later. The 48 MP sensor is the rear main camera; the iPhone 14 Pro’s Ultra Wide and telephoto cameras are 12 MP. How to enable HEIF Max
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Turn on ProRAW & Resolution Control, or the similarly named resolution-control setting. Menu labels can vary by iOS release.
- Open the Camera app and press and hold the resolution control at the top of the screen.
- Select HEIF Max.
- For a full-resolution result, use the rear main camera at 1× in a suitable shooting mode.
Some newer iOS versions also let you choose a HEIF 48 MP default in a ProRAW Format or Photo Capture settings menu. If the Camera control is not visible, check that resolution control is enabled in Settings.

How to check whether a photo is 48 MP
Open the original photo in Photos and swipe up to view its information, including pixel dimensions. On a Mac, inspect the image information in Photos or Finder; on Windows, check the file’s properties for dimensions. A 48 MP image may be around 8064 × 6048 pixels, but dimensions can differ with cropping or processing, so use the metadata for the specific image rather than treating that pair as mandatory. Confirm that the original is HEIF/HEIC, not a DNG ProRAW file.

Check the original on the phone or through a file-preserving transfer. A copy sent through a messaging, social, email, or web service may have been resized, recompressed, converted to JPEG, or stripped of metadata.
HEIF Max vs. standard HEIF vs. ProRAW

HEIF Max is not RAW. It provides more recorded pixels in a compressed HEIF image, while ProRAW combines RAW information with iPhone image processing for greater editing control. Apple estimates a 48 MP ProRAW file at about 75 MB and a 12 MP ProRAW file at about 25 MB. Those estimates are for ProRAW; Apple does not specify one fixed HEIF Max file size, which varies with image content.

When a HEIF Max photo may not be 48 MP
“Up to 48 MP” is the important qualification. Apple says resolution can change when using zoom, Night mode, or flash. The 48 MP capability belongs to the rear main camera, so the front camera and the 12 MP Ultra Wide and telephoto cameras are not 48 MP cameras. At other zoom settings, the phone may switch cameras, crop, or change processing; a displayed zoom number alone does not prove a native 48 MP capture.
Macro, Portrait, and other specialized modes can also have different camera or resolution behavior. Apple specifically documents a 1× main-camera restriction and 12 MP limits for listed modes and other cameras in its ProRAW workflow; do not assume every one of those exact limits applies identically to HEIF Max. Verify the dimensions of the actual file when full resolution matters.

Is HEIF Max worth using?
- Use HEIF Max selectively for well-lit landscapes, architecture, travel, products, or other important shots you may crop, edit, print, or display large.
- Use standard HEIF for most casual photos when you will share them, view them on a phone, or do little cropping. It is more storage-efficient and often sufficient for those uses.
- Use ProRAW Max for serious editing when you want more control over exposure, color, or white balance and have room for large DNG files and a compatible workflow.
More pixels can retain fine detail and give you more room to reframe, particularly in good light with the main camera. They do not automatically improve dynamic range, color, or low-light performance. Lighting, focus, subject movement, processing, noise reduction, and final viewing size all affect how much difference you can see.

HEIF Max files are larger than standard HEIF, though generally easier to manage than ProRAW. The precise difference depends on the scene, so take several sample photos and check their sizes before committing to a workflow. If you shoot many high-resolution images, leave free space on the phone, monitor iCloud Photos storage, and transfer older originals to a computer or external archive. Apple notes that large photo files can fill device or iCloud storage faster.

Apple Photos can view and edit HEIF Max images, as can third-party apps that support HEIF/HEIC. Support varies with operating system and app version, particularly on older computers and some Windows setups. If another device cannot open the original, update its software or viewer, or export a JPEG copy for wider compatibility. Keep the original separately if preserving its format and full resolution matters.
For sharing, do not assume an app will retain the original HEIF file or its full dimensions. Use a file-preserving transfer method when the recipient needs the original; use an exported JPEG when broad compatibility matters more than keeping HEIF. Check the received copy’s dimensions if resolution is important.
If HEIF Max is missing or the image is smaller than expected
- Check the model at Settings > General > About. It must be an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, not the standard iPhone 14 or 14 Plus.
- Confirm the phone runs iOS 17 or later.
- Recheck Settings > Camera > Formats and enable the resolution-control option.
- In Camera, press and hold the resolution control and select HEIF Max.
- If the saved image is below 48 MP, check the lens/zoom, Night mode, flash, macro or Portrait mode, and whether you are inspecting an exported or shared copy rather than the original.
If a HEIF file will not open elsewhere, try Apple Photos or an updated viewer. Export a JPEG for compatibility, while retaining the original if you need the HEIF version.
